About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

    Great show, poor sound!

by Denilson on 2017-11-15The Fillmore Detroit - Detroit

The show was really good, loved the opening bands as well (3Teeth especially, they were a great surprise, sounded good and their music is awesome, CKY are not bad but their sound was awful), however, the sound was incredibly bad, especially for HIM's act. We initially thought it's because the location (we were pretty high up on the balcony), but checked out the front of the venue and the sound was equally bad. Not sure what happened, as we have seen many Fillmore shows and most of them had impeccable sound. Other than that, the show was great and Ville still has it!

    Terrible

    by Stc139 on 2011-10-09Sound Academy - Toronto

I don't even know where to begin...Everything was bad. The band stood STILL. Ville stood STILL aside from his hands clentching and shaking occasionially which I attribute to him not being able to smoke. They seemed like they didn't want to be there at all. Ville's voice live is also goodawful. He mumbles inaudible, then does this offtune Screech that sounds like Dani Filth in a blended. We are the Fallen and Dommin, 2/3 of the opening bands were awesome. Drive A were not.

    HIM blew my mind!

    by HIMFan1979 on 2010-05-04MacEwan Hall - Calgary

I've been waiting about 8 years to see HIM, and finally I got the chance. Why I didn't make the trek to Calgary from my home in Manitoba before now is beyond me! 3 opening acts was a bit much, especially with all the anticipation waiting for these Finnish lads. HIM didn't disappoint, Valo was on his game, both vocally and personably, full of jokes and silly comments, laughing a lot with his bandmates. His vocal range has become outstanding since he quit smoking, I was actually in awe of what he was doing, while making it look effortless. The crowd was intense as I knew it would (and should) be. My only regret is not making the trek to Edmonton the next night for another shot of HIM greatness. Next time for sure. A lot of fun. A lot of crazy. A lot of sweat. I WILL do this again.

Is he on the brink of death

by notworththemoney on 2010-04-29Edmonton Event Centre - Edmonton, AB

So I was not expecting We are the fallen to be so damn good, good performance, covered "like a prayer" by madonna beautifully, they were my favorite act of the entire night. H.I.M comes on and well he looked extremely ill, and the only really good part about that show was the guitarist and his kick ass solos...i actually felt tired by the end of the night by sheer boredom.

    Good but not heavy enough

by Metalized on 2010-04-23MacEwan Hall - Calgary

The first thing I noticed when HIM hit the stage was how frail Ville Valo looked. I hope for his sake that he is able to eat a balanced diet while on tour. The first song, St. Valentine lacked energy somehow, even though it was a good song. That's generally the impression I had of the whole show. It was well-executed but I would prefer more heavy songs, and maybe allow the very-capable guitarist Mikko Lindstrom some flexibility with some extra riffing or solos. Also I wish they didn't play "Wicked Game"; a pointless cover song that should be deleted from their playlists. The crowd was an eclectic mix of roughly 20% metalheads, 20% goths, and about 60% miscellaneous other categories. About a third of the crowd was really into the show, happily singing along to classics like "Join me in Death" while the other two-thirds appeared somewhat sullen. I caught a bit of the last opening band We Are the Fallen, but their music is not my cup of tea, especially the vomit-inducing "Like a Prayer" cover.

next to marilyn manson and peaches Him was the best

Drive A was terrible...laughable. Dommin was pretty good. We are the fallen sounded like a poor man's Evanescence. HIM came on you could barely hear the vocals...and they played for only an hour. Bad vocals. I would like a refund. please.

    Wow! Good Show!

by AJHollywood on 2010-04-21MacEwan Hall - Calgary

I really like HIM's music and had no idea about the opening bands. Never heard of any of them, but that wasnt a bad thing, What a great concert. Sound was awesome. Opening bands were great, I really like Dommin! As much as HIM even. We are the Fallen was good too (Pretty much Evanescence). Three great, well performing bands for a great price. Could'nt have asked for a better time. HIM sounded pretty close to the CD's and performed really well. All three bands put in the effort and that's what counts.
