About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

I was disappointed. The opening acts were very humdrum, and HIM was equally unimpressive. Many songs were interrupted in the middle with talking by the artist himself, and in the middle of one song he even left the stage and returned after several minutes, during which the other band members were doing guitar solos.

    Lackluster

by Emolistic on 2010-04-19Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I can only comment on the HIM performance, as that was the only thing I was looking forward to. Although I had a blast just due to nostalgia, I must say I was disappointed with the set. Their performance only lasted 45min and the Ville's lack of stage presence surprised me (he never moved from the middle of the stage) However, the sound was great and the audience ate it up!

An amazind band with a charismatic lead singer

by Rasco on 2010-04-19Showbox SoDo - Seattle

One of the best rock bands in the world! Ville Valo's voice has no equal in today's music. He is undoubtedly the most talented voice of this generation. I hope I can see them again in a different venue, much bigger and with a better acoustic. This band deserves better than the Showbox. I hope they make it to the big scene, they are amazing.

    Ville was mind-blowing!

by LimeGirl on 2010-04-17Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

The Commodore was a good place to host the event, and though the set up was great there was only one thing that really annoyed me. The microphone volume was too low. In every single band you could hear the guitars and the base perfectly and really loudely but not the voice. It was very frustrating specially when HIM came up because many of the baritone notes of Ville that I went to listen to i couldn't hear many of his stunning notes. Other than that once they were done they came back upon the request of the crowd (one more!) and played Rebel Yell (amazing performance!) Overall, i would pay to see them again and again.

    HIM singalong

by akrt on 2010-04-17Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Dommin had best sound, We are the Fallen made the house rock but vocals were mixed to unrecognizable. HIM played equally old and new stuff. Thankfully Mr. Valo took contact with the crowd, which made the gig so much better. The crowd made most of the singing, I was impressed how well vancouverians had memorized the lyrics. The night was a great package!

    Great towards the end

    by JadeD84 on 2010-04-15MacEwan Hall - Calgary

This concert was great. With 3 opening bands. We are the fallen was worth while watching and really pumped up the crowd. When Him came on staget i believe there were some technical problems where you couldnt really hear the singer. Then they fixed it and it was alot easy to get very involved in the concert. it was very intimate and didnt feel like a concert more like watching your friends play in there garage. That was awesome. They had a great set and played alot of there older songs which i liked. Another reason they didnt get my full 5 stars was alot of the merch was sold out by 7 30 and that was very disappointing.

by MsNIKI on 2010-04-14MacEwan Hall - Calgary

The concert was amazing as HIM always is. the only down fall was that there were problems with Villa's mic and sometimes you were unable to hear him sing.

Calgary Mac Hall show April 13th

by TigerLilly on 2010-04-14MacEwan Hall - Calgary

Hello, This was a most disapointing show. I am a hardcore HIM fan (the kind that has HIM tattoos and buys HIM merch like crazy) but found this show terrible. Last time they were here they were amazing. But this time they only played for 1 hour and aprox 15 minutes. Ville seemed to not want to be here ("oh look at the time") and went off on tangents where he kept attempting to sing other people's music and then tried to teach band how to play the song he wanted to sing, just to remember that he doesn't know the words. Putting his back to the audience for lenghts of time while doing this... Also he seemed to be counting the minutes till they could leave. Followed by something that sounded like he was making fun of Canadian education??? He seemed totally out of it, like exausted and under the infulence of something?? The rest of the band was being very patient with him but you could see some tention. I don't know what was wrong but it's embarrassing to say the opening acts were all way better than HIM last night. I'm honestly embarrassed to be a HIM fan after that show. They just didn't make any effort into the show. Like we were inconvienceing them. Ville even kinda flaked out hitting notes at the ends of the songs... Overall it was pretty bad.

It was amazing. I loved getting pretty close to the front where I could almost reach out to touch Ville ^.^
