About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

    Distorted

    by kokanee84 on 2010-04-14MacEwan Hall - Calgary

Drive A opened and was very engaging with the crowd. The lead singer crowd surfed, started a mosh pit and sang while in the crowd getting everyone into the music. Dommin was not as engaging but had a very clear crisp sound. Then We are the fallen came on and I honestly could not hear a word she was saying, the bass was to high and her mic was to low. I usually love HIM in concert but this one is almost forgettable. Nothing stood out, he did talk to the crowds but again everything was so distorted that you couldn't understand what they were saying. They sang very minimal songs and left out quite a few hits that would be expected at a HIM concert. All in all Drive A and Dommin were awesome and then it went downhill from there

I have been to EVERY concert in Toronto that HIM has played. I have to admit, this was not one of the best. I'm assuming Ville was a bit worn out from the Montreal show the night before. They were still AMAZING, so I'm not disappointed, knowing very well that as a singer, your vocal chords to become worn out after several shows in a row. I would definitely go and watch them again, they are AWESOME!!!

HIM was awesome, sound at front not so much.

    by Jenny1165 on 2010-04-04Clutch Cargo's - Pontiac

At the HIM concert at Clutch Cargo's I must say they were amazing as always, my favorite band to see live! But I must say that the sound in the front row was pretty horrible. The vocals were too quiet, and the other instruments overpowering. But I guess thats the sacrifice you have to make for front row at Clutch Cargos!

    HIM was amazing

by beastley on 2010-04-04Sound Academy - Toronto

i thought that the show was amazing HIM and all the special guests sounded so good and i would pay to see anyone of them again. I loved the way the lead singer of HIM interacted with the audience and the overall stage presence he had. The venue was perfect it was intimate enough that if you were at the back of the crowed you could still see without missing anything. We drove 17 hours just for that concert and if i had to do it all over again i would do it in a heart beat.

    Just utterly Brilliant..

by ronni on 2010-04-02Sound Academy - Toronto

The show was amazing and the guest acts were quite a fitting lead up into the main. The only issue I had with the night would have been the excessive amount of drinking/drunken - especially at an all ages event. However that's just how things play. Oh, and I guess one more added thing. You need to work on sound management! The bass drum was kicked up so high it was beginning to drown out all of the other instruments and vocals... Other than those two things the show was pretty great, had loads of energy and was completely encompassing and delightful (in that love metal mosh thrashing kind of way) I enjoyed it but I certainly wouldn't recommend it for the faint of heart or the shy. You gotta be ready to claim your territory with metal fans just to keep your spot. I was pretty amused with the fact that I got about three meters away from the stage and HIM - mind you it took a good portion of an hour and a few good shoves BUT like I said, metal show. I wasn't to great a fan of Drive A though they did have a good sound going on ~ but the overbearing drums kind of killed it for me personally. The acts kept getting better going into Dommin, which, for me sounded like a mixture of perhaps Savage Garden meeting HIM meeting Creature Feature and it was easy to listen to with the lead having a pretty spectacular voice. (Here's hoping for that album soon) And coming in second last is We are the Fallen WHICH were spectacular and I'm so glad that they included a band with female vocals!!! She's my heroine! Yet again the sound was a bit off but she did her mighty hardest to over come that. Awesome job. Of course then came the wait for HIM and the dodging ever so delicately through the crowd of 7/8 foot giants (because of platforms??) It took a while to find a decent spot and heck that didn't matter after a while because once the crowd got going you were being bounced around in energy and sing-along. Awesome, Amazing, and Astounding. : ) Oh, did I elbow you? I'm sorry. Not.

    Really awesome

by nogavicka on 2010-03-29The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

The concert was amazing. I loved the venue and I loved the performance. HIM was my favorite band for 4 years at the end of highschool/beginning of university. I never had a chance to see them live at that time, so I didn't even think for a second whether to go or not (although I had to overpay for my hotel). They played a lot of old stuff and Valo had to go to the bathroom sometime in between. That was hilarious. I just wished they played more :)

    HIM is flawless

by MrsValo on 2010-01-21Mac Hall - Calgary

Their music is sensational. Even if you don't know the band, you could go to their concert and have a great time. The music is very well written, performed beautifully and the lead singer is very easy on the eyes. I would HIGHLY recommend this band to anyone who loves music.
