STEELY DAN IN CONCERT:

Steely Dan is responsible for some of the most complex, finely crafted classic rock of the 20th century, and they continue to deliver on tour more than 40 years after their debut. Core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are legendary for their musicianship, and they only surround themselves with the finest players, making for studio-perfect live renditions of their virtuosic compositions. Whether fans are out to wax nostalgic with "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" or sway in the breeze of "Hey Nineteen," Steely Dan never fails to deliver amaze, with another hit-filled tour planed for summer 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen met in the late '60s at Bard College in Upstate New York, writing songs together for several years before officially forming Steely Dan and releasing their first single "Dallas" in 1972. While the single sold poorly, their debut album Can't Buy a Thrill was released later that year to considerable critical and commercial success, landing the band their first hits with "Do It Again" and "Reelin' in the Years." They continued to climb the charts throughout the decade, reaching their peak position in 1977 with Aja, a No. 3 hit widely regarded as a seminal album of the classic rock era. Amid rumors of a return to the studio, the band will hit the road in 2014 for an extensive summer tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Steely Dan has been around so long they can play an entire concert of familiar songs and not run out. I personally like a band that can recreate the studio sound on stage well. SD does this better than anyone else."

” I cannot think of a time that I was ever disappointed by a Steely Dan show, and this concert was no different. From the minute they took the stage right on up until they left it (almost two hours later) we were presented with excellent music performed to perfection with some stories thrown in for good measure."

"Always a MUST SEE when Steely Dan comes to town! Each song was performed superbly by top-notch musicians. Every member of the band was featured. It was hit after hit, classic after classic."

    40 yrs of waiting

by Movieman on 2015-07-16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have wanted to see Steely Dan since the 70's when a friend played Rikki Don't Lose that Number. When I learned about the 2015 tour I had to go. I was not disappointed Sadly a few of the great songs were absent but that is always the case I would like to have heard "FM" "Do it Again" and a few others but I was very satisfied

Another Stellar Performance by the Dan!

by Totofan on 2015-04-24Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas, NV

I've seen Steely Dan perform numerous times in the past 30 years or so and I believe this was just about their best performance yet. The setlist was pretty much everything I could ask for in a greatest hits type performance, and while others think that the band maybe wasn't quite 'on', I think they were loose and it looked like they were actually having a good time. The tickets were pricey to say the least but for a band of this caliber it was totally worth it and after every show I always think it will be their last tour so...Just great all around and one of the backup singers is smokin' hot too so that didn't hurt.

    Best Ever

by Rambler on 2015-04-18Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

One of the best sounding concerts we have ever seen. Backup to Becker and Fagen were Outstanding. Only problem was that the horns drowned out the Lead Guitar on some solos but it still sounded great. Steely Dan rocked!!! Nothing laid back about it. Rocking tunes all the way through.

    Steely Dan -average

by redrnl on 2015-04-15Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

Not bad, but didn't play some of their greatest songs including Deacon Blues and Peg. Fagan voice definitely not what it was, but still Fagan. Walter Becker just can't play the riffs any more. His alternate lead guitar played admirably. The Band backing up were ok and the three female singers were all-stars. Only one song in the encore.

Donlad & the band were amazing-Walter, not so much

by MethenyFan on 2015-04-14Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

I've seen Steely Dan many many many times & they always manage to put on a great show. With the caliber of players in the band & those amazing songs, it's hard to not put on a good show. This time was no different. The band was tight. Donald was inspired & looked to be having a great time...however, Walter was not at his best. His playing was horrible. Wrong notes, poor chops, slurred speech etc. He played & looked like he was high or drunk. I've seen him play so many times & he's always been a solid live player, but this time he was so bad it was embarrassing. I know he's had issues with substance abuse in the past, but I hope he hasn't relapsed. Steely Dan is my favorite band of all time & I want more albums & tours. Apart from Walter, the show, set list & playing were top notch & the sold out Palms audience loved the show.

    Steely Dan Rocked the House

by Petunia17 on 2014-09-03Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

One of the best concerts I've ever seen... amazing Jazz musicians playing my favs from the 70's. There were a few songs I would have really like to hear like Deacon Blues and Midnight Cruiser, but I guess they can't play them all. I just wish people would have got up and DANCED! what's wrong with Torontonians? Still humming Hey Nineteen two weeks later. If you get a chance GO SEE STEELY DAN!

Steely Dan was as good as Ever!

by lowtalker on 2014-09-02National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Great musicians, great selection of songs. Danettes did wonderful job filling in spots and were great on their own. The band is extremely tight and sound just as good live as they do on their CD's. Drummer and horns were bang on!

    Bucket list concert.

by Milliedog on 2014-09-01Darling's Waterfront Pavilion - Bangor

Best concert ever. If you only know Steely Dan for their radio hits, you might be disappointed, but if you are a fan you will be rewarded big time. If I was disappointed, it was because they didn't play 'Green earrings' and 'Babylon Sisters'.

    Stellar jazz-prog chops

by thestatsguy on 2014-09-01Darling's Waterfront Pavilion - Bangor

One of my top ten concerts. The line-up includes so many great players that form a very tight group. Fagen and Becker can still bring it.

    great band. poor sound

by tch4 on 2014-08-31National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This was a big disappointment. I have most of the band's LPs and CDs, and on a good sound system you can hear the care and professionalism in producing a great sound. I expected the concert, especially at the NAC, to be better than the recordings. The band was great, but the sound engineering was ridiculously poor. The bottom 3 octaves were amplified so much that the drums and bass sounded like a wall of fat, bloated and pounding sound, so much so that it was difficult to hear the actual notes of the bass guitar. Because of this, most solos, especially John Herington's guitar, were not audible. The sound engineer responsible for this terrible sound is clearly to blame here. I just wish whoever it was had an ear for the music rather than a clearly unprofessional approach to the craft. I will be reticent to attend any more amplified music in this hall. I will stick to acoustic music.

I was glad i finally got to see the band. They played all the hits i know except Do It Again and FM which sad to say was a bit of a disappointment for me and my sister who were looking forward to hearing those tunes. THe band did sound great although abit jazzy for our tastes.

    Steely Dan

by Anonymous on 2014-08-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Poor quality sound, sloppy musicianship and lazy delivery. These are musicians that set the bar very high for themselves, and are touring based on past glories-that being so, if there are no more radio hits to produce revenue,then-the nostalgia shows should be epic events-considering the ticket price, we as an audience have the right to expect the very best. This was not the case on this particular night. There was rambling stories about tequila-poor miking for the backup singers, boring lighting-distorted sound(and I was right next to the sound guy), the event felt like a cash grab for the geezer rock boys-sad,loud-expensive and disappointing. I would not pay to see this band again, and would tell others not to do so-and thereby waste money,I am sorry to say these things-but they are true.

by Moparfest on 2014-08-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Sound was impeccable, Donald Fagen was excellelent. Guitar tech screwed up few guitars for the band but overall excellent. Don't know why I smelled "skunk" sometimes during the concert?

Perfect venue for a Canadian show...finally

by steelyfan on 2014-08-29Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

SD was in fine form and Sony Centre was perfect size, sound wise. A couple of critiques: Donald needs to curb Walter from singing- it is simply awful! They played 2 nights back to back- there should have been a hits night and then a night with the setlist structured for true Dan fans. This was my 9th show I don't need to hear Peg or Bodhisattvah ever again! They really need to vary the songs they choose to be more wide spread. The Danettes have been covering Dirty Work for years now...enough already! Every show from Toronto to Montreal to NY to Boston. I've been to them all, its getting old!!! The reworked version of Show Biz Kids was fantastic. Bottom line is the quality of the musicianship can't be beat

    Steely Dan in Ottawa

by RockinDBro on 2014-08-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The sound quality, vocals, musicianship and overall performance was excellent. The set list was also very good playing most if not all of the hits. There was a bit of unnecessary rambling by Walter Becker but no harm done. Donald Fegan's voice was outstanding and all of the renditions of the songs were excellent. I would go again!
