STEELY DAN IN CONCERT:

Steely Dan is responsible for some of the most complex, finely crafted classic rock of the 20th century, and they continue to deliver on tour more than 40 years after their debut. Core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are legendary for their musicianship, and they only surround themselves with the finest players, making for studio-perfect live renditions of their virtuosic compositions. Whether fans are out to wax nostalgic with "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" or sway in the breeze of "Hey Nineteen," Steely Dan never fails to deliver amaze, with another hit-filled tour planed for summer 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen met in the late '60s at Bard College in Upstate New York, writing songs together for several years before officially forming Steely Dan and releasing their first single "Dallas" in 1972. While the single sold poorly, their debut album Can't Buy a Thrill was released later that year to considerable critical and commercial success, landing the band their first hits with "Do It Again" and "Reelin' in the Years." They continued to climb the charts throughout the decade, reaching their peak position in 1977 with Aja, a No. 3 hit widely regarded as a seminal album of the classic rock era. Amid rumors of a return to the studio, the band will hit the road in 2014 for an extensive summer tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Steely Dan has been around so long they can play an entire concert of familiar songs and not run out. I personally like a band that can recreate the studio sound on stage well. SD does this better than anyone else."

” I cannot think of a time that I was ever disappointed by a Steely Dan show, and this concert was no different. From the minute they took the stage right on up until they left it (almost two hours later) we were presented with excellent music performed to perfection with some stories thrown in for good measure."

"Always a MUST SEE when Steely Dan comes to town! Each song was performed superbly by top-notch musicians. Every member of the band was featured. It was hit after hit, classic after classic."

Third time was good, but not the charm...

by LeBigGuy on 2014-08-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This is my third time seeing the group in concert. Clearly each musician was great at their craft - in particular the drumming was awesome, as was the opportunity for the Danettes to be the lead singers on 'Dirty Work'. Overall I really enjoyed the show but a few things stood out for me as 'could be improved' and left me a little disappointed by the end of it: * - generally, the sound was much louder than it needed to be (I was in the orchestra Row L and it was at times painful - this is not SD's style IMHO); * - too often, the heavy low end bass sound overwhelmed the subtlety of the rest of the music; * - some of the great horn, guitar and keyboard work faded into the general din; and * - there seemed to be an 'imbalance' in the blending of the instruments, Fagen's voice and the background singers. At times Fagen and the Danettes were indistinct, unintelligible and overwhelmed by the rest of the band. The clean 'SD sound' I was hoping for was lacking from parts of this show, but I think these were technical issues that could be resolved with a better pre-show set-up and sound check. (Maybe the grind of the tour schedule didn't allow for a thorough sound set-up?) Despite the above comments I'm glad I went to the concert. It still hit home for me and was a 'must see' for the true SD fan.

    Steely Dan

by Weasly on 2014-08-28Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I loved the show. I'm a big Steely Dan fan and they performed great. I did think though that there was to much time given to the horn section. I love Sax and other wind instruments but I just thought it took away from the other great performers on the stage that night. The guitar player was terrific, and the drummer was incredible. A top notch band with a great string of hits. Overall a great night out.

Good supporting cast for Becker and Fagan. Women singers and brass section were excellent, However Fagan's voice was quite weak at times, good thing he had the 3 women backing him up cause otherwise it would have been more noticeable.

by DanFan1 on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

A big fan since the mid-70s, but my first chance to see Steely Dan live. They did not disappoint. Neither did the Sony Centre. Beautiful sound. Great setlist. No gimmicks. Still reeling.

    Steely Dan solid as ever

by Hensel on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Even though Donald Fagen's vocals were strained, the band was musically tight and played many of the old favourites.

    Steely Dan YEAJA

by middleagedyuppie on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I started buying Steely Dan albums 40 years ago and always loved the rock/jazz mix. I wanted to see them the last few years but never planned it well. I am glad I saw them indoors in the comfort of the Sony Centre. The band was tight with a great horn section and lead guitar. The drummer was awesome he should be paid twice the amount for working twice as hard. They played almost all of AJA album ( which is their best work) with 1 or 2 songs from their other albums. 'Ricki don't lose that number' was not as identical to the album but I guess that is their perogative when playing live. I never thought they would encore with Kid Charlemagne but glad they did as I love that song.

    Steely Dan Jamalot 2014

by theboy on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Steely Dan at the O'Keefe centre??? (formerly named the Hummingbird, and now recently the Sony Centre) - given its reputation for not so good acoustics, I was skeptical. But SD is an old favorite, and I wasn't sure how much longer Becker & Fagan would be touring, so I bought a ticket, sat 10 rows back, and let the music take me ....... Instantly, and again, the quality of their band hit me; no surprise here, F&B have always been sticklers for having top quality musicians join their crew. After a bit of stage tuning from their controller, the horn section seemed better balanced, and played exactly as they should......in the background until called upon to demo their individual (& cumulative talents)...... Their solos were outstanding - these guys can play.... The drummer provided crisp rhythm, and was spot on. Talk about a workhorse. This guy was the heart of the band..........The bassist & pianist were rock steady, playing fully as expected - with excellence. The ladies in the chorus were superb; each contributing a different sound, that worked great in harmony. The star though was John Harrington - the "lead"- guitarist. This dude can play, and has mastered all the riffs, dexterity & agility that have belonged to the very best that have ever played for Steely Dan. Walter added his usual plucking, and seemed very comfortable passing the torch (& workload) to JH. His "rap" during Hey Nineteen showcased his humorous side..... and then Donald........ that same, so very familiar voice reaching a bit, but still all the character & flavor that is Donald Fagan. Thank you guys for 40+ years - and come around soon. I'll buy another ticket.....hopefully a smaller venue - Massey Hall would be perfect....

    Could have been better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Pitty on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The concert started out great but a real lull in the middle because of tune selection . Fagan's vocal is not even close to the old days . Great band though . How can you omit Deacon Blues and Do it again from the set list ?

by avocadorico on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Becker and Fagen are incredible musicians, and they surround themselves with some of the finest artists you will ever see. A truly enjoyable show. How they can tour without playing "Deacon Blues" or "Do It Again" is beyond me.

    Steely Dan gettin' old

by SquirrelGirl on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Took my dad to see this show. He was the average age of the audience at 66. Becker is loosing his marbles, and Fagan is loosing his voice. Backup singers were great.

Once again, Donald & Walter brought an incredible group of musicians to pleasure our ears with some of their wide list of great songs. Each musician and singer was allowed room to showcase their top level skills while doing great justice to each tune.

The sun is setting on Steely Dan

by AgingFan on 2014-08-27Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

There aren't many people who are bigger fans of Steely Dan than me, so this is hard to write. I love their music, but the truth is that it's getting late in the day for Messrs. Fagan and Becker. In Becker's case, it doesn't matter as much: they have, as always, recruited a band of awesome musicians, and Walter can fade into the back drop without leaving much of a musical gap. His music sounds great whether it's played by him or someone else. With Donald Fagan, however, the substitutes aren't the same. And, sadly, neither is Fagan himself. As time has passed, Fagan has increasingly become a caricature of himself, as he recedes more and more into a snarly, stylized, NY accented mumble. Too frequently, his vocal stylings now include spoken words rather than singing, off-kilter cadences, and swallowed lines. You can't do Steely Dan without Donald Fagan, but increasingly you can't do it with him either. The back up singers are awesome, but they're not a substitute for the unique voice of Donald Fagan, and that voice seems to have disappeared a few years back. Obviously, "it's not the same" as it was in the glory years, but it's not even really that close, and, in too many ways, it's not really good enough anymore. I still love the music, but it might be better to listen to the original recordings and not try to recreate the past with people who aren't really up to the task.
