About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

    Diana was great as usual

by yath on 2017-12-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

As usual Diana was great. Love her music and her voice. The band was excellent as well. Enjoyed hearing her old songs as well as new songs. Second time I've seen her and enjoyed it as much as the first.

    Wonderful Show, Extraordinary Talent!

by Catmandu2017 on 2017-12-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My husband and I enjoyed the show. There's no question that Diana Krall and her team of musicians are all amazingly talented! One thing both my husband and I noticed, and this is just our opinion and is not intended to offend or negatively criticize Ms. Krall: we noticed that her engagement with the audience was very minimal and there's no connection established between the performer and the audience. We've been to other live shows and we've always noticed the performers connecting to and engaging the audience, through small dialogues in between songs. Sometimes the performer would even ask the audience a general or funny question that would result to some laughter which creates a lighthearted connection. Maybe it's just not Ms. Krall's style, and that's fine. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm only saying it's different. This observation did not affect my respect for Ms. Krall's talent or the talent of her musicians.

We've wanted to see Diana Krall for years in concert and finally had an opportunity to see her in Ottawa this past weekend at the first of her two shows. Unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations. The show was barely 1.5 hrs long and when she finished we weren't sure if it was the intermission or if it was the end of the show. It was the end of the show but she did come back for an encore of 3 songs. Unfortunately, the concert featured way too many solos by her band mates and very little singing by Diana. The artists were very talented however we got tickets to hear Diana sing and the concert didn't deliver. She looked beautiful and when she did sing, she did not disappoint. There just wasn't enough. Reading the reviews, it looks like the 2nd show was longer by 30 mins. and she may have been a bit more dynamic than during our show. Sorry but I doubt we will pay to see her again.

    Disappointing!

by Lori123 on 2017-12-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Diana Krall and her band are amazing musicians. My husband and I were disappointed because there was more instrumental music than actual singing. She has a wonderful voice and we would have loved to hear more from her.

    Just keeps getting better!

by Bellylaugh on 2017-12-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Absolutely fabulous concert - Diana Krall is a Canadian treasure. Her sultry singing style is totally mesmerizing and made for a wonderful concert. Her willingness to share the spotlight with her accomplished band members made the event a complete package and one well worth the price. Don't miss seeing her if you have the opportunity.

Diana Krall - Turn Up The Quiet Tour

by West637 on 2017-12-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Absolutely fabulous. Diana's sultry voice bathes the listener with warmth. As always she was surrounded with masterful musicians. She still knows how to stroke those ivories. Diana and company are not to be missed if you appreciate real music as it was meant to be played.

    Diana Krall band

by VeryDisappointedHamilton on 2017-12-03FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - Hamilton

Great band but not what i was paying for. If it had been advertised as the Diana Krall band backed up by Diana, i sure would not have paid $150 a ticket. I paid to see Diana Krall not her band. I've seen her twice before and loved both shows. Was very disappointed and will not be going to see her again. Felt like i was misled in purchasing tickets. I understand the band is a huge part of it and they were awesome but again i paid to see her not her backing up the band.

Diana krall and the Band were awesome

by Guerra on 2017-11-27FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - Hamilton

Diana Krall and her Band played very well together. Infact, Diana had individvual Players accompany her as Solo Acts all through the Concert. This is an Awesome idea, and allowed each Muscian to shine in their own Right.

    More band than Star

by DubbyD on 2017-11-27FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - Hamilton

Started 15 minutes late then must have introduced each member of the band at least 6-8 times. Yes the band was good but we knew after the first time announcing them who they were. She played a total of 1.5 hours alot of which she was not playing or singing. Not a lot of her memorable hits. For over $200.00 I would buy the CD's next time. Which by the way were $25.00 each when most stars sell at $20.00

Dianna Krall was great, but to much of the show was given over to solo fiddle or guitar, which I did not pay to see or hear.

    A bit disappointing

by Charlize on 2017-11-26FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - Hamilton

Diana Krall is an amazing artist, I just wish we had heard more of her sing. The concert was more about her band and their musical interludes than her. She has a large amount of music and I wish we had heard more of her work.

by HammerDRock on 2017-11-26FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - Hamilton

My first time to see Diana and her group in person. All that I expected - her talent was on display, her mix with her backup was great.

    Poor Performance

by Disappointed123A on 2017-11-26FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - Hamilton

Was the worst concert I've been to. There was to many solos from the band and not enough entertainment for whom we paid to hear...Diana Krall not drum solos and guitar and base solos! The stage lighting guy must have fell asleep (it was not appropriate to the set up) just a terrible overall concert.

    50 Cents More Diva Please

by Dianafanboy on 2017-11-26FirstOntario Concert Hall (Formerly Hamilton Place) - Hamilton

Third Diana concert experience. Fabulous piano technique. Wonderful ensemble work. “Turn Up The Quiet” a very welcome return to form. But please Diana, way too many solo swaps and fawningly repetitive credits. The keyboard has 88 notes, and you sing just 8 of them. So be it! We love your voice. Work the set pieces. We love the ensemble work. Save the solos for one number?

    Great but way too short

by PR12 on 2016-10-25National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My wife and I love jazz and Diana Krall. The arrangement with full orchestra was well done. However, the concert was part of a fundraising gala and was very short so with very high ticket prices was not really worth it. We were disappointed; we were expecting a full concert but got only half-a-concert.

My wife and I absolutely enjoyed seeing Diana Krall and company! They all played fantastically! It was a very warm and intimate event despite the size.
