About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

  • Good to have Diana Home !

    by Jazzeynights09 on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

A fabulous evening with a special touch. So appreciated Diana's acknowledgement of being home. Played straight without an intermission which really allowed us to appreciate your musical repetoire. Odd that she played with the VSO as they really didn't seem to play along very much. Loved her shoes!!! So personal with her comments. Even on the upper balcony we had good seats. Disappointed that the Orpheum allowed people to be seated when the concert had started. This interrupted the performance for about the first 30 minutes. Would highly recommend this fabulous artist! Welcome home Diana!

  • Diana Krall - a memory for life

by Frith on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I have waited for a chance to see Diana Krall for many years and travelled to Vancouver to see her. Even though I was sitting way up in the Orpheum Theater I had moments when it felt she was playing just for me. Amazing!

  • Homecoming of a truly International Star

by klaw on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Despite her international status, Diana Krall impressed as the pretty, "down to earth" girl next door. Her stories about growing up in Nanaimo and playing the local bar, owned by the ex-NHL referee - as were her stories about her family were truly presious. However, as precious as she may have impressed, it was nothing beside her eloquent piano playing. My partner has always argued with me with regard to Diana's singing but she had to admit that her "phrasing" and singing are impressive. Not only was she impressive but she also let her fellow band members get a little of the spotlight.

  • Diana's Homecoming

    by trudiem1 on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The rainy night outside gave an intimate feel to the homecoming concert of Diana Krall. This is the most relaxed and sincere concert I have seen her give. She allowed herself the freedom to improvise and relax. In this atmosphere her true musicality shines through. Her recordings do not do her justice based on this concert experience. If you get the chance to see Diana Krall in Vancouver - do so! It is a experience you will remember for a long time. Even a pigeon enjoyed the concert from the rafters of the Orpheum. It was there for two free nights of Diana Krall live! What a lucky bird!

  • Absolutely Delightful!!!!

by Shanon on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The evening was a real treat, factor in the VSO, Diana performing at home in front of family and friends, and her being utterly charming and telling wonderful stories in between songs. It made for a fabulous night. It was my first time seeing her live even though I have been an admirer for many many years and I can't wait for the opportunity to see her again.

My husband and I loved the concert. Diana seemed so relaxed and happy to be home in Vancouver. This is the 2nd time we have seen her and would definitely go again. We listen to her at home all the time. My daughter used one of her songs to dance with her Dad at her wedding - has great memories(Narrow Daylight)

  • Diana Krall is ours!

by NealeA on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Diana was great May 13 at the Orpheum. Phasing just right, singing with a terrifically talented trio. I love her chatter... and she obviously loves Vancouver. How luck we are to have her.

  • Diana Krall at her best

    by PollyM5 on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The evening with Diana Krall was magical. We have seen her live at three other events, but this one was extra special, as her family was in the audience, and she played her heart out for them, and all of us. It was a treat to hear some of her personal stories, and she was much more talkative than usual, which added a lot of charm to her already stunning keyboard facility. We enjoyed the latin influences in this concert, as well as the jazz standards she treats in her unique and impeccable style. It was her most intimate, beautiful and worldly performance.

  • Diana and her band swing!

by theAtrain on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

This was a really special gig - the Orpheum in Vancouver holds a lot fo memories for Diana and the show was peppered with personal anecdotes and an insight into this thoughtful, talented jazz pianist's life and passions. Anthony Wilson, Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton were in great form and they really but some swing into 'exactly like you,' 'frim fram sauce' and others. Brilliant.

  • Outstanding performance

    by IGS28 on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I am big fan of Diana Krall, even though most of her music are covers I was impressed by her vocal and music talent live. She is an amazing interpreter of jazz classics and she spiced up her concert with a great sense of humour topped with narration of personal experiences, which made the show more intimate. The VSO made this one of the most memorable performances I had ever seen. It was the perfect mix of talent.

  • Diana Krall is a 'natural' jazz artist

by Charlie on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Diana Krall seems so comfortable on stage and allows her audience to feel that they are an intimate part of her performance. She is truly a talented lady who we are all proud to say, comes from B.C.

  • A fantastic evening with Diana Krall

    by Chris61 on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Diana Krall and the VSO were amazing. Not only is Diana a great singer and piano player, but a great storyteller as well. She made you feel like a friend she could laugh and joke and share personal stories with between songs. It was so much fun!

  • There's No Place Like Home!

by nance on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

'Can't say enough about our evening out at the "Quiet Nights Concert ." The always vibrant and gratious personality of Diana Krall evoked huge musical emotion among the sellout home-coming crowd. My husband whose ticket was a 60th birthday present, adored her whimsical story as she stretched her piano legs aboard titillating, sparkling ruby heels. Her repertoire of familiar-and-new was truly a musical odyssey and deserving of the long standing ovation. Luv-you in Coquitlam Diana!

Diana Krall l has never disappointed. Her voice is an instrument and she knows its' every nuance. She has grown as an entertainer since I last attended a concert. She is much more at ease on stage and appears to be enjoying herself

  • She was a class act and a canadian chatter!

by Phil on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The best thing about watching a live performance for me is to get to KNOW the person. You can listen to music at home if that is all you want. Diana opened up her soul to the audience and keep the place warm and friendly all evening. She talked about her family and told us all kinds of stories between songs. Now when I listen to her music I feel a friend is playing.

  • Diana Krall's music nor for Orpheum setting

by ozyron on 2009-07-11Orpheum Theatre - VancouverRating: 1 out of 5

Having shelled out $100+ per ticket (4), then being relegated to the nose=bleed section was not my idea of having a fun night out. Her music lends itself to a more intimate setting. I get more enjoyment out of watching her DVD "Live in Paris".
