About

DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

Sultry voice, amazing Oscar Peterson influenced piano playing. She was accompanied by her own superb musicians and the NAC Orchestra. Great performance, could have listened to this music all night. The real deal!!!

An amazing performance both by Diana Krall and her accompanying quintet. They are amazing musicians who clearly love to play music.

Amazing talent, couple that with quaint lighting and set design, and you have a Diana Krall concert. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and would definitely go back. Thank you, Diana Krall and co. as well as the NAC for a terrific night!

    Diana was sadly forgettable.

by Mobile4357 on 2015-06-02The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor - Windsor

Having been a Diana Krall fan for 2 decades, I was excited to finally see her in person. There was no dimming of the lights, no announcement, they just walked out. She said 'hi' and started playing. For my liking, the mix on the piano was a bit quiet, as I struggled to hear her play at times. The stage was decorated, in my view, as if they were going for a retro Era, but seemed a little haphazard. The distracting background videos were short clips, continually looping, as if little thought had been given to it. These were just my initial observations, and after all I'm here to listen to her play...so I ignored the lack of visual appeal and watched her perform. She is an amazing artist, and jazz pianist, and in most cases that would be enough, and it almost was. I just was surprised by the lack of structure and organization with the sets, as if she was just going through a hand written list with little regard to flow or story, or mood. Most of the songs were very low key and mellow, with little upbeat momentum to carry it forward. I was also disappointed to not have a camera angle on the keys, the main reason one sees Diana Krall. The moments that she really played, she was great. With most concerts, there is a flow that inevitably brings you to a point where you can anticipate that it will end soon. Not so, it ended as abruptly as it began, 1 hour and 15 minutes later. We didn't stay longer but I noticed they came back for an encore. No emotions, no journey, no mood no silly story, or interesting fact. All that said, Diana is amazing herself, and I love the music. Having just seen DVD concerts prior to this evening, I was a little let down. The venue was not a particularly cheap venue for our seats, so if petted to be entertained. I love you Diana, but your "show" needs a little work.

    Diana Krall was good

by kozer on 2015-05-27Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

The Hamilton Philharmonic accompanying Diana Krall's performance were fabulous. Diana Krall is an amazing talent; both vocally and musically. I would have liked to hear her sing more with a little less instrumental from her group. They were amazing but I wasn't there to hear them perform. She is also a little lacking in her interaction with the audience. Overall, though, I enjoyed the show.

    Premier Canadian Talent

by Welchy on 2015-05-27Hamilton Place Theatre - Hamilton

Diana Krall is yet another example of how rich this country is in talented artists. She's not only a phenomenal vocalist but a multi-talented musician as well. It is a source of pride to see her name on any billboard. Great accompaniment with her band and excellent backup by the HPO. Loved it all.

As always Diana puts on a great show. Lots of variation in the music. Her backup band is excellent. The inclusion of the HPO on some songs was a nice surprise. Overall a great performance by all.

Diana Krall is the least engaging artist I have ever been to. All she does is play the music. And it wasn't ever her music. 90% of the show was covers of other bands. I wouldn't recommend her show to anyone.

    Diana Krall Wallflower World Tour

by ker1230 on 2015-05-22Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

We love the Diana Krall Wallflower album. I was most disappointed by the concert as was my husband. We expected her to play most of the songs on the Wallflower album; however, I think one or two were played. The backdrop to the concert was weird and others said the same thing to us while we were leaving the concert. This was our 25th Anniversary gift to each other. We were so disappointed! So disappointed! We really want our money back!

I did not feel Diana's voice was as strong as I expected, but could have been the sound sittings, the piano and other instruments were good.

    Diana Krall is so talented!!!

by Fortfrances on 2015-05-22Centennial Concert Hall - Winnipeg

The concert was excellent, however, we would have preferred that Diana sang every song on the Wallflower CD, which is incredible. It was still a great show. We found the screen pics a bit distracting. The Centennial Concert Hall is a wonderful venue.
