DIANA KRALL IN CONCERT

Born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Diana Krall grew up on Vancouver Island in the western part of Canada and began studying the piano when she was four years old. By the time she was 15, she was playing jazz in local restaurants and bars.

Ms. Krall was still a teenager when she was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After two years in Boston she moved to Los Angeles, where she first me her Jazz influences, including John Clayton, pianist/singer Jimmy Rowles, and Ray Brown, the legendary bassist who served as her musical mentor (and played on Only Trust Your Heart). Ms. Krall had lived in Los Angeles for three years when she then moved to Toronto, and it was a Canadian label that gave her a chance to record for the first time. In 1993, the Montreal-based Justin Time Records released her debut album, Stepping Out. In 1994, she signed with GRP and recorded Only Trust Your Heart, which featured Brown on bass and Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone and marked the beginning of her association with Tommy LiPuma (who has worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to George Benson).

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. To date, her albums have garnered five Grammy® Awards, 10 Juno® Awards and have also earned nine gold, three platinum and seven multi-platinum albums. Krall's unique artistry transcends any single musical style and has made her one of the most recognizable and beloved artists of our time.

    Diana Krall forgets her stuff

by lizzie5678 on 2015-05-19Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

We were SO disappointed with this concert. Diana Krall has been a favourite artist of ours for a long time and we have many of her Cds. Bought tickets to the concert as a treat and it was expensive. wish I had not bothered because most of the evening was covers which we were not expecting. Back up orchestra was great and the fiddle player amazing. Diana Krall sounded like she had been at the sauce already and forgot her stuff more than once.

Fabulous singer not so much a show personality .

by lmjohns on 2015-05-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Diana Krall never left the piano …her band was great and The Calgary Backup was also wonderful…so when I closed my eyes and soaked in the music and her voice it was almost worth the $116 but not quite. I could have been home listening with a glass of wine …

Diana Krall - pure music performance

by ArtsDiva on 2015-05-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Second time I've seen Diana Krall (other time was in a different city) She is very authentic and gifted. Its inspiring to see music poor from her soul. The musicians that accompanied her are also very talented especially the gentleman on the violin. This was a performance about the love of music, fantastic.

    Diana Krall was Amazing!!, but.....

by Distracted on 2015-05-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I've always loved Diana Krall but her one-night performance here in Calgary, left me a little disappointed - not with her own performance, but with the Videos playing in the background to each song. I truly thought it was just me but have since found and discovered that it was not. I found the videos not only unrelateable to each song, but difficult to watch, very very repetitious; even silly and ridiculous and very poor quality. I just didn't get it! But most disappointing, was how very distracting they were - especially the repetition! I found myself struggling to understand and interpret their meaning.....was there meaning?? They all took away from the pure joy of sitting back, relaxing and allowing her to thoroughly entertain me. I had to make an actual effort to give my attention to Diana - I was very distracted.

I thought having the orchestra play with her totally took away from her voice and her musicians.

    Diana Krall in Calgary

by Skidaddl on 2015-05-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Generally enjoyed the concert, but found it was a little on the short side. Also, we felt that it was somewhat disappointing that Diana Krall did not play much of her old jazz standards, but rather relied too heavily on the Orchestra. I think that the many (MANY) grey haired people attending the concert likely loved it, but those of us who fell in love with the early Diana Krall - Diana the Jazz Musician - were a bit let down. There is no doubt Diana is an incredible talent. Really enjoyed her music and her voice - she is a brilliant musician and arranger. Her band was awesome! Great solos, would have enjoyed it more if it was just her and her band (didn't need the orchestra, though they were good as well). Video backdrop was a bit distracting at times - tried to ignore it.

    Diana Krall

by maclyn on 2015-05-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

My wife and i attended the Calgary concert. This is about the fifth Diana concert we've attended. This was the best. A great night of great music. Her group of musicians are outstanding and Diana also played great jazz piano.

    Diana Krall music extravaganza

by louz on 2015-05-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The intensity of the energy put into the music by Diana and all the accompanying musicians was extraordinary. Diana seems to understandably have difficulty switching into narrative between songs due to her depth of compassion for her music. Would absolutely see her her again. Kudos to her selection of her band mates and musical selections.

    Diana Krall was amazing

by Randria on 2015-05-18Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Diana Krall was great. But she should speak a little louder when introducing the title of the songs. We were very close to the front of the stage and we couldn't hear her very well when she spoke. Her singing was fantastic. I would definite recommend her concerts.

    Diana Krall continues to shine

by Unerose on 2015-05-14Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Monday's show with Diana Krall was musical excellence, as always with such a talented musician. The solos by the fiddle player (sorry, I don't recall his name) were exceptional, a wonderful treat to the ears! I have been a Diana Krall fan for many years, and have enjoyed her jazz arrangements of many popular tunes. Her exploration of other genres is also rich and flavoured. I especially enjoyed "Temptation", and Joni Mitchell's "Case of you". What was distracting however was the backdrop with video loops of old black and white silent movies, with some of these scenes slightly out of sync, and some a bit "disturbing". I think it was meant to be funny, but I felt it took away from the concert, and was cheap and tacky. I would have rather had a plain backdrop, just to focus on the excellence of the music from all these fine musicians. The ESO added just the right amount of punctuation.

    Great but not super

by EricP on 2015-05-14Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Diana Krall is a great jazz singer with a very diverse repertoire and she comes with a very talented group. The only negative about the whole performance is that she is not a great entertainer. When she, rarely, said anything to the audience, it was a mumbled reference to who write the next song. Apart from one reference to growing up with her mother. we really didn.t learn much about her, except that she sure can sing and play, but we knew that already.

Dianna Krall's concert was very boring!

by Meebs on 2015-05-14Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

She did not engage with the audience and her choice in music was all the same boring stuff. Nothing fun & jazzy or upbeat.

    Silky Smooth

by Prough on 2015-05-14Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Diana Kralls silky smooth sultry voice was only rivaled by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra....both were on point. The only downside was that she only played for an hour and a half....time flies when you don't want things to end....

Diana Krall - leaves me breathless as always

by PurpleNed on 2015-05-14Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This is the second time i have seen her, first time with as orchestra adjoining her. Loved the show, wonderful and she is spectacular live. My only wish is that it was longer, given the price I paid for the ticket I would have liked to see more than 1.5 hours.

Diana Krall Glad Rag Doll at Humphrey's

by MusicMan5 on 2013-09-25Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

There was not much of a buzz happening in this show. It seemed like she played a set of alternative music and just cut out her standard stuff. For the effort we made to get to the show and the cost, it was quite short. Some nice tunes, but overall a bit disappointing.
