About

MODEST MOUSE IN CONCERT:

Indie rock veterans Modest Mouse enjoy a level of mainstream success that few other indie acts can touch. While the band's intelligent lyrics and expertly crafted songs made them critical darlings in the early '00s, their eclectic live shows earned them legions of fans. With their first new album in five years due out in 2014, Modest Mouse are gearing up for headlining slots at the Boston Calling and Shaky Knees music festivals. Fans lucky enough to catch the band at these rare appearances will be among the first to hear material from the new album — performed alongside all of their greatest hits, of course.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Washington in 1993, Modest Mouse found an early home on legendary indie labels K Records and Sub Pop. After moving to Up Records for their 1996 debut full-length, the band achieved breakthrough success with 1997's Lonesome Crowded West, which drew praise from critics and earned them a cult following. While 2000's The Moon & Antarctica was another success, it was 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News that really broke things wide open — the album went multi-platinum and brought the band their first chart exposure with hit singles "Float On" and "Ocean Breathes Salty." In 2007, the band's fifth studio album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank landed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, effectively rendering their indie status null and securing their position as a festival headline-caliber act.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"They were honestly amazing. They played with so much energy, played about 20 songs, and absolutely tore the place down. A must see if you get a chance."

"The sounds, the lights, and the crowd were unbelievable. Isaac really blows your mind, his beautiful music and lyrics had the entire crowd swaying with their eyes closed. It was an event I will never forget..."

"Modest Mouse put on an amazing show. Every song sounded even better than the studio version."

    Awesome show

by Katesd on 2009-08-24Sound Academy - Toronto

Modest Mouse was incredible, they put on a great show and their music was flawless. Sadly they didn't play any of my favourites (I'm most familiar with the album Good News for People who Like Bad News) but that's not their fault. Still a perfect performance. Cons: I've never been to Sound Academy before but I found it too small and cramped, seemingly no ventilation so it was extremely hot. I couldn't see the stage or the bands without standing on my toes, and I wasn't even that far back. Would have really liked to SEE more of the performance (that's the point of going to a concert). Besides that there was about 45 minutes between bands which is a long time to wait when you're crammed in a sea of pushy people, all trying to get in front of you. Otherwise I loved the show, MM was amazing! can't wait for them to come back to Toronto so I can see them again, hopefully at a bigger, better venue!

    Modest Mouse

    by mbjb1972 on 2009-08-24Sound Academy - Toronto

The first of two nights at the Sound Academy was in my opinion a great show. Looking at the setlists from previous nights I was pretty excited at the thought of getting a lot from Lonesome Crowded West, Interstate 8, Long Drive etc. We did get a few great songs from the 90s, but it was a night of The Moon and Antarctica right through to the new EP. Right from the opener, Satin in a Coffin to Talking Shit about a Pretty Sunset the crowd was into the show and the band seemed into it. There were a few extended jams that were extremely well received. My highlights were definitely Parting of the Sensory, Tiny Cities, Spitting Venom & All NIght Diner

    Modest Mouse...fantastic music, bad environment

by onetwo on 2009-08-24Sound Academy - Toronto

I found the environment to be a bit stifling. I don't have anything against large crowds - and this was certainly a rambunctious one - but it was nearly impossible to see and enjoy the show with all of the hustle and bustle and some individuals shouting out comments regarding hit songs (like "Float On") over and above other songs. While the band performed a great show, it was difficult to stay focused & I was constantly comparing this performance to better ones I have seen by the band in the past.

The sound was incredible and Issac was phenomenal! I loved the intimate feeling of the Sound Academey. Drinks were easily and readily available and the staff were very pleasant. Overall, this concert rocked!

    Awesome show by Modest Mouse

by Raisa on 2009-08-23Sound Academy - Toronto

From start to finish the show was fantastic. Great energy from the band and audience. What a talented group of musicians, amazing to watch the 2 drummers play so tightly together. Light show was great and added so much to the show!

    Doin the Cockroach

by AMckay on 2009-08-23Sound Academy - Toronto

Set List was pure genius, MM could not have engineered a better one. Heard some of their old stuff(the best) and their new stuff. The way they put their newer stuff in between their new stuff made it a lot better. Particularly liked whale song, is now one of my favorite MM songs of all time. I was in front of Isaac the whole night, and I can tell you that you have not heard Modest Mouse until you've seen them live.

    Modest Mouse, was well modest

    by Stoolfeather2 on 2009-08-23Sound Academy - Toronto

The show started off great, the band was on and sounded great. As the show went on i found myself getting excited about the songs i really love and it seemed they were saving my favorites for the end. The show ended and after a lot of cheering the guys came out to do an encore, and i was left waiting for my favorite songs. The show was great, but i found it odd they only played 2 songs from "good news for people who love bad news" So i wasnt entriely happy, but the show was still great and i would not hesitate to go see them again.

    Modest Mouse Engages the Listener

by jonnyc on 2009-08-23Sound Academy - Toronto

Modest Mouse has an unimaginably unexpected stage presence, one that does not seem compatible with the music they sell on CD and Vinyl. Regardless, their live performance is riddled with an on stage and engaging energy that encourages feelings of enthusiasm towards the sound like few other bands. With their refined and catchy sound, Modest Mouse not only makes exceptional use of the two drummer live set up, but also allows for a listening experience that seems further progressed compared to their recorded material.

    modest mouse blew me away!!

by littlemotel on 2009-08-23Sound Academy - Toronto

The concert was simply amazing! The opening band perfectly set the stage for Modest Mouse. MM played a perfect balance of old and new material, and played a great length set. They were all extremely strong live, both vocally and instrumentally! They integrated a wide variety of instruments into the show! I will without question be seeing them on their next tour!

    Modest Mouse-My first time

by ModestGirl on 2009-08-22The Sound Acadamy - Toronto

To see Modest Mouse play live has been on my list of things to do and I can finally cross it off. Although I will definitely go to as many of their shows as possible, after what I had seen last night. I have heard of many bands who sound terrible live, and that was a fear I had when I went to see Modest Mouse. I did not want my opinion of them to be shattered and it most certainly was not. They were incredible! I love the fact that they are antic free and do very little talking in between songs. Very much like The Beatles performance style. Modest Mouse's concert last night was fantastic and only made me excited and hungry to hear more music from them.
