MODEST MOUSE IN CONCERT:

Indie rock veterans Modest Mouse enjoy a level of mainstream success that few other indie acts can touch. While the band's intelligent lyrics and expertly crafted songs made them critical darlings in the early '00s, their eclectic live shows earned them legions of fans. With their first new album in five years due out in 2014, Modest Mouse are gearing up for headlining slots at the Boston Calling and Shaky Knees music festivals. Fans lucky enough to catch the band at these rare appearances will be among the first to hear material from the new album — performed alongside all of their greatest hits, of course.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Washington in 1993, Modest Mouse found an early home on legendary indie labels K Records and Sub Pop. After moving to Up Records for their 1996 debut full-length, the band achieved breakthrough success with 1997's Lonesome Crowded West, which drew praise from critics and earned them a cult following. While 2000's The Moon & Antarctica was another success, it was 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News that really broke things wide open — the album went multi-platinum and brought the band their first chart exposure with hit singles "Float On" and "Ocean Breathes Salty." In 2007, the band's fifth studio album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank landed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, effectively rendering their indie status null and securing their position as a festival headline-caliber act.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"They were honestly amazing. They played with so much energy, played about 20 songs, and absolutely tore the place down. A must see if you get a chance."

"The sounds, the lights, and the crowd were unbelievable. Isaac really blows your mind, his beautiful music and lyrics had the entire crowd swaying with their eyes closed. It was an event I will never forget..."

"Modest Mouse put on an amazing show. Every song sounded even better than the studio version."

Marrdest Mouse out with the old

by MarloweMouse on 2009-08-22Sound Academy - Toronto

A good show for anyone new to the band, but for old time fans it was easily a disapointment. Starting off with Satin in a Coffin, followed by a string of their more recent songs, filled with energy and flare, only to be broken by some older songs which they seemed less then enthusiastic playing.Almost completely ignoring their greatest album, only shit luck was played from the wide variety of fan favourites to be found on The Lonesome Crowded West. The show was ended with spitting venom, which after a bit of jamming led into I came as a rat for a nice surprising finish. A few minutes later and Modest Mouse is again out on stage, for the encore. Float On and Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset for an excellent finish to a less then amazing concert experience.

Were they dead, or was I sleeping?

by inlikealion on 2009-08-22Sound Academy - Toronto

Aside from their choice of setlist and long pause in between songs, this was a really good show. Modest Mouse played a broad scope of their material with something from nearly every cd. I was most surprised that only one song from their brand new EP made the cut. I was waiting to hear Autumn Beds the whole night. They brought the energy to the show, but let their momentum slide with super-extended versions of their newer songs, including a 12 minute rendition of the already long Spitting Venom. All in all, for one of my favourite bands, I was a little disappointed.

I adore Modest Mouse, but this show was not great

by aname on 2009-08-22Sound Academy - Toronto

Can I say first that Modest Mouse is hands down my favorite band, I've been into them for years, and I've seen them 4 times including this show. I was disappointed. Now, to be fair, none of the shows I've seen have blown me away, the guys in the band don't seem to be all that enthusiastic about playing live. I get that, because the album stuff is really layered and complex...weird sounds and things that don't necessarily translate into a live show BUT...at the very least, know the lyrics to the songs you choose to play! There were a few times when Issac seemed to blank out on lyrics, and mumbled something or sang lyrics from another part of the song. I've never seen that before, and it was kind of disillusioning. By the second half, it was better. That aside, set list was pretty good, a lot off We Were Dead...and Good News...plus the new EP. A few from The Moon and Antarctica...It would have been nice to hear a few more from the really old albums...but that never happens and I only say it because you always want to hear the entire discography when your favorite band is up. Oh...the lights were TERRIBLE. Just awful. blinding flashes after every song, and random colors and patterns that were way too bright and didn't fit the mood at all. Sound Academy is a good place to see a show, sound was good, great sight lines, bars everywhere, lots of parking. All in all, I left feeling pretty disappointed, but it was a decent show and I'm really picky so...maybe not the best judge. I'll see them next time they come around.

    Modest Mouse

by wolves on 2009-08-22Sound Academy - Toronto

Saw Modest Mouse at Sound Academy very good venue, great sounds lots of room, awsome patio. I have been a fan of modest mouse since late 90's, love their stuff. Modest Mouse performance was very good, I did not want to complain but here goes, the set list and length of some songs are questionable. Some of the songs went on for almost 10 mins, and when there are 6 band members smashing all the instruments (the entire music class instruments} the music was lost and it just became noise and boring. The songs that they did play my favorite "parting of a sensory" and talking shit about a pretty sunset, dashboard, where awsome. I'm not just a fan that likes their radio play but maybe im not hardcore and like the filler music on the cd's. Unfortunatly I wouldn't go see them again. But I would recomend to see them once.

    Modest Mouse, I've seen better.

by generalbeard on 2009-08-22Sound Academy - Toronto

The band wasn't playing tight at all. Isaac Brock did sing pretty good, compared to their albums. I found his guitar playing to not be that impressive, especially when it was out of key.

    Modest Mouse has great talent

by Eron on 2009-08-21Miscellaneous Venues Kingston - Kingston

It was a good show (hot because of the venue). They are very musically diverse. I think they should have played their hit "Float On", you need to play the awesome songs for the fans. That part was disappointing.

    It was alright

by TheDrake on 2009-08-21Miscellaneous Venues Kingston - Kingston

The music was good but the players themselves were super-boring to watch. They didn't seem to care if they were there or not. The place was way over-sold and very sweaty. Give me a punk band that's grateful that 50 people showed up to support them any day.

    Modest Mouse was spectacular!

by xxgreenthumb on 2009-08-21Miscellaneous Venues Kingston - Kingston

The concert was awesome! The Alehouse was a good place for the concert, but I do believe it was oversold. It was so crowded it was stupid and of course it was hard to see and get a good spot. Mind you I'm used to going to concerts with tons of people but this was bad, bouncers yelling at people to get off the stairs or they'd kick you out and then as soon as you moved someone was right in you're spot. I ended up getting a good spot but I had to be one of those who pushed their way through unhappy people which is never fun, and of course I felt bad for stealing their view. I had one chick who kept trying to push me from behind and shoving her fists into my back. But hey what can you do?! I just tried to ignore felt the music and danced and watched the boys play. They were awesome it was my first time seeing them and I wasn't disappointed, amazing live. I almost didn't think they were gunna come out for the encore, even as much as everyone screamed, and I know I was one of the loudest cause I'd sometimes be yelling on my own. I can't wait to see them again and I do recommend them you won't be disappointed!
