Did not have the magic this year

by euro on 2019-12-09National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The music was as always amazing. The dancers were pretty good however I was a little disappointed in the addition of the Canadian theme with a polar bear running around in the back ground and mice that looked more like dogs with flappy ears. I have seen the Nutcracker numerous times and must unfortunately admit that this was the least enjoyable performance. I wasn't transported to that magical place i was used to when watching this particular performance.

by Trish on 2019-12-09National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Since I was a little girl we have had a generational outing, my great grandmother, grandmother and mother and we still continue this tradition now with my own children. I’m was always excited about coming to see the Nutcracker, we all continue to enjoy the Royal Winnipeg Ballet interpretation of this ballet. They are truly still the best!! My grandmother said it best, this is always the best way to kick off the holiday season. Thank you to everyone involved for another great show, bravo!

    Magical

by M. F. on 2019-12-09National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It’s an annual tradition for my daughter (27 yes old) and I to attend the Nutcracker. The beautiful stage, the wonderful dancers and the funny addition of the big bear and polar bears were all wonderful. Let’s not forget the orchestra who played flawlessly. It was an enchanting night for both adults and children.

    Nutcracker

by J. S. on 2019-12-08National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Opening night. As usual it was a lovely evening out at the NAC. I enjoyed a few of the newer twists I hadn’t seen In previous years, this year’s Nutcracker somewhat disappointing. It was opening night so expect a few kinks to be worked out but there were obvious dancing missteps by some of the men dancers and the sugar plum fairy’s performance was lacking in grace. The story telling wasn’t as strong either. Overall though, how can you not enjoy watching some fantastic ballet to one of the best musical scores ever made. It was still a thoroughly enjoyable night but not sure how you can tell guests to be wary of scents (at intermission) as it was obvious a guest near us had stepped out to smoke marijuana as we had to endure smelling it the whole 2nd half performance which also detracted from our enjoyment and our daughter’s

    Magical

Couldn't stop the applause. All of the performers were amazing, When intermission came, my daughter was all upset and asked "is it over"? She was much relieved when I told her we had an intermission. Thank you and Bravo.

    Slipping

by grinchy on 2019-12-07National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We appreciate trying to keep a tradition fresh by updating, but this performance lacked unity among the dancers too many times not to be noticeable and disappointing The choreography was redundant and two-dimensional. I think there was one arm sweep toward the floor and no tombe, for example, at all that I saw. The male dancers were impressive and it was a delight to see so many young people participating. The hostess at the NAC Restaurant, if this is part of the review, said we had no reservation and then un-apologetically found it mis-spelled with a blank stare and remark as though somehow, obviously not having written it, that was my mistake. Perhaps setting me up to be critical of the performance to follow! The meal itself was lovely. Hosting family members, I had hoped for a very special evening and got surprises on both ends of the spectrum!

    So/So

by J on 2019-12-07National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It felt like a high end high school production In the past the sets and costumes have been far more detailed This production was a bit disappointing

    RWB's Dracula is sumptuous!

by Dinofangirl on 2018-04-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Absolutely love this ballet and cannot see it enough! Exquisite from start to finish, and the music is sumptuous as well (all the music is Mahler).

RWB's Dracula - exquisite as always!

by Dinofangirl on 2018-04-18National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Absolutely love this ballet and cannot see it enough. I live in Winnipeg, and travelled to Ottawa to visit mates and see all three performances. One mate who came with me and was seeing this ballet for the first time called the end a "jaw-dropping" image, and I have to agree. Start to finish, Dracula is a treat. I'll be back to see this one for certain!

    Wonderful!

I really enjoyed Dracula. It was fun (especially the gargolyes) and the dance was beautiful.

    Dracula was amazing!!

by FirstBolshoiShow on 2018-04-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

One of the best ballets' I have attended! The dancing was superb, and there were many times I was spellbound, so intense was the some of the scenes!! I was enthralled with Lucy as she floated across the stage. Amazing performance from all the dancers, but I must say Lucys' performance was the most graceful and beautiful. I loved the comic relief of the gargoyles and the Pantomime in the beginning of the second act. There was chemistry and heat in some of the sexier dance scenes. The inventive set changes were impressive, especially when the red fabric curled up and over the front stage and across to the back to reveal the male dancers, awesome touch! The ONLY way it could improve is more dancing/scenes involving Dracula. All in all it is a must see!!

    Amazing Performance. A Must See.

by cwfjkrc on 2018-04-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It has only been in recent years that I have appreciated the ballet. I am a fan of the Winnipeg Ballet as a friend of the family was a performer and wanted to support the company. After seeing the Nutcracker twice, I started to appreciate the strength and agility of the performers, the acting of the performers, and the costumes and special effects. Dracula was a performance that exceeded my expectations. The set, costumes and performance were well done. There was a little comedy at the start of the second part of the performance which put a smile on all in attendance. Overall, I enjoyed the evening watching Dracula and would recommend this performance to everyone that appreciates the arts.

Gothic horror and ballet united at last

by VladTepes on 2018-04-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

A lovely ballet comprising both modern and classic styles. Based on the famous book, with some liberties taken. Humorous retelling of most of the story in the middle part. Accompanied by the glorious music of various Mahler symphonies.
