About

54-40 in Concert

Vancouver's 54-40 keep exploring new permutations of their durable alt-rock sound 40 years on. In 2018, they released their first new album in seven years, the aptly titled Keep on Walking, which saw them effortlessly shift from nervy new wave ("Sublime Like Me") to clap-along folk hootenannies (the title track) to swaggering, soulful modern rock ("Sucker for Your Love"). They sound just as energized and adventurous as they did back in the 1980s. After recovering much of the rare gear stolen during their 2018 tour, 54-40 brave the road once again with a winter jaunt across Ontario, kicking off with a three-night residency at Toronto's legendary Horseshoe Tavern before moving to more off-the-beaten-path markets.

54-40 on Tour

Their very first gig may have been opening for hardcore heroes D.O.A. at legendary Vancouver dive Smilin' Buddha Cabaret, but 54-40 swiftly acquired a more chameleonic aesthetic that pushed them far beyond punk. On the string of college-radio-courting records they released in the mid '80s, the quartet (named for 19th-century president James K. Polk's call to expand into Canada, "Fifty-four Forty or Fight!") resembled a northern answer to R.E.M., exhibiting a similar fusion of brooding British post-punk and shimmering American folk-rock jangle. But frontman Neil Osborne's cool attitude gave way to winsome melody on breakthrough singles like "Baby Ran" and "I Go Blind" (which reached an even wider audience when Hootie & the Blowfish covered it in the ‘90s). As alternative rock skewed toward heavier sounds, 54-40 toughened up accordingly on 1992's Dear Dear, whose snarling singles "She La" and "Nice to Luv You" would give the band their first platinum record in Canada. They'd repeat the feat with 1994's Vancouver punk-scene tribute Smilin' Buddha Cabaret, which yielded the irresistible, grungy groove of "Ocean Pearl." With former Matthew Good Band guitarist Dave Genn replacing longtime member Phil Comparelli, the band have soldiered on into the 21st century, earning an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2017.

    Always a fun night

    by Pilot50 on 2023-10-10Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

They always put an a good show but the sound wasn’t great this time. Very hard to hear the lyrics over the band. Something was off there as we’ve seen them many times at the Commodore and it was very clear. That was a bit disappointing.

I've seen a lot of concerts over the years and this was hands down one of the best shows I've ever attended. The music felt totally fresh and relevant and live music is just the best. 54-40 is alive and well and I look forward to seeing them again!

    Great Sounding Band

by DG_ConcertFan on 2023-03-17Casino Rama Resort - Rama

The venue was very well organized and the sound from the bands was fantastic. We've seen this band many times and they have never let us down. They always come ready to play, regardless of the size of the venue. The only negative comment I can make is with the seats we had. We jumped on the presale early and found availability in the front row. We were very excite about this, but after being there, I would never do this again at this venue. There is an area that is marked off in front of the stage for people to come and stand. Anyone from anywhere in the venue is allowed there. As the concert progressed, there were 4 - 5 people deep, which meant that we could no longer see the band, even if we stood up. For the most part, we had to watch the video screen in order to see the band. Very disappointing. There should have been some notice of this before we bought the tickets.

Great vocals and guitar playing. These guys can belt out 20 hits in a row! They were very engaging with the audience and told a lot of great stories and got the audience to participate in the songs.

4rh time at a 54-40 concert. Canadian icons.

by Charby on 2023-03-15Casino Rama Resort - Rama

54-40 is a must see live band. Voices are crisp, the three guitar jams are spectacular. Many will say, I don't know of 54-40, until you have them google the band and then you hear.....I know that song, that one too, this one is awesome.Oh wow, that's also one of their tunes. Many well written poetic songs over the years. Very energetic group who have been at it since 1981. A great show, ger our and see them if you can.

    Great Show

    by R. S. on 2023-03-14Casino Rama Resort - Rama

I have heard a number of 54-40 songs on the radio over the years, but didn't know much about them. My wife and friends were all in the same position and were pleasantlysurprised how much we enjoyed the concert. The lead singe is personable and the sound was set up well. The Northern Pikes are good entertainers and very talented as well. The only con about their concert was the sound was much more distorted than the 54-40 setup. I would guess we have been to Rama 30-40 times for concerts and every 8 to 10 shows doesn't have great sound. The worse sound we have heard there was ZZ Top, probably 10 years ago now, which was extremely disappointing, as I am a big fan of their music.
