Someone please help Chuck Berry
by JTRMF on 2014-07-24Blueberry Hill - St. LouisWe traveled from Toronto to St. Louis to see Chuck Berry at Blueberry Hill on July 23rd, 2014. We understood that Mr. Berry is 87 years old and wouldn't perform like he did in his younger days. However what we saw at the show was a sad spectacle. Berry's charming smile kept the audience engaged and rooting for him, however his most basic musical sensibilities are completely gone. He couldn't remember any words to any songs, he couldn't keep up with the back-up band (which was excellent by the way) and he spent most of the concert sitting on a chair at the back of the stage watching everyone play around him. Most of the audience was forgiving and was happy to pay just to be there, however it was unfortunate to see him paraded around on stage. I'm not sure if it was his decision to perform or if his handler's but I could see the pain in his children's eyes as they did their best to support their father on stage and make him look as good as he could. I don't regret driving 1100 km to see him "perform" - as a big fan of rock music it was a honour to be there, but certainly if you are expecting a show...you're not going to get one. From his first moment on stage until he was escorted off was less than an hour.
