David was amazing. Having never seen him before he far exceeded my expectations and had my parents and I laughing out loud the entire evening. We also stayed after the show and had a chance to meet him and chat with him during his book signing. He’s a legend and I’ll definitely go again.
he was funny, charismatic, lovable. a perfect date night for my pal and I. We've loved his stories, but seeing him live was just so wonderful!! xoxoxo
Love love love David Sedaris. His wit and taste are a rare treasure .
It felt intimate and Mr Sedaris was a hoot. We laughed from the belly.
will watch again for sure! David Sedaris is a very funny mix of flight and fancy. i find it really funny how he came across reading his books because that was exactly how i imagined he would sound like when i was reading his books!
David Sedaris is hilarious!! Hearing his name makes me giggle! I love his readings, they never disappoint. He is one of the few performers I just never want to miss when he comes to Toronto!! I LOVED seeing him again!!
Do NOT go if you are easily offended or can’t hear some graphic language. It is not random, it always fits the story and frankly, is really, really hilarious. If you buy a book, he graciously signs everyone’s copy and will chat with you for a bit but DO NOT invite him to eat the food that he has sitting beside him or he will fix you with a direct stare and say “ I HATE when people tell me to eat” and you will stand there like a chastised child.
...laughing so hard. Counted it as a work out! I loved the way Mr. Sedaris unapologetically retold the stories of his experiences growing up in a family of characters who were at times, larger than life. Coming from a family of 10 myself, I know first hand what waking up each morning excited for the day to begin because of people who would be joining me at the breakfast table is like. I thoroughly enjoyed his stories because they mirrored many of the experiences of my own life. David appears to be a soft easy going soul who looks for the joy in life and I really enjoyed my time with him.
Great show, but maybe let us know the book signing was going on before and after. Would have gone in earlier.
I brought along a friend who had never been ‘to this kind of comedy’ and it was a lovely fun evening. We were happy to bring in a beverage to sip and relax as we listened to David read his essays. He was funny and he can say things that sometimes we just think about. I am interested in his new book coming out, his observation of life and how it unfolds in all its peculiarity is the most fun. You can’t make this stuff up!!!!
David Sedaris is a brilliant story teller, witty and charming. I have never laughed so much at a performance, I wish I could go again.
Thoroughly enjoyed him. Was laughing 1 minute into the show and kept laughing until he walked off the stage. Brilliant writer, speaker and observer of humanity. I will seek him out again in the future. I wish I had known he would be signing after the show. Next time I will be prepared for that!
I cannot lie, with the exception of one Christmas story (which my husband plays the audio recording every year), I was mostly unfamiliar with David Sedaris' work and had no idea what to expect. Well I can easily say I laughed a LOT! It was a simple show, one man, a podium, and excerpts from his books and diaries, but such a fantastic storyteller. There is a lot of swearing and what some might consider almost vulgar detail, but somehow David Sedaris manages to pull it off in a way that's not only humourous but almost eloquent in its delivery. The only downside to this show was entirely to blame on the venue. The Sony Centre is a lovely facility but the volume was SO low! I have exceptional hearing but struggled throughout the entire show. David Sedaris is a rather soft spoken performer and I had higher expectations of the venue.
Let me say right up front how much I LOVE David Sedaris' writing. I've read most of his books and always appreciate his insight, intelligence and sharp wit. And for someone who has a potty mouth, I was strangely disappointed by the number of references he made to "shit" in one form or another. I am a big endorser of well placed swear words or dealing with "icky" topics in comedy but it really stood out for me since I know so many of his stories have nothing to do with that topic. He was engaging and certainly funny as he read his stories aloud but it would have been nice to have greater spontaneous interaction like he did at the end of his presentation. Also, we were VERY unimpressed by the HUGE mark up on his most current book ... not sure if that is the Sony Centre's doing but it definitely came off as gouging. I was hoping to sit back and just revel in the delightful company of an author I adore but came away feeling a bit let down.
This was the first time that I got to see David live. I have read and reread all of his books. Even though you are in a huge theatre, he makes you feel like he is talking directly to you. He spent hours after the show signing books and talking to his dedicated fans. His observations about life are hilarious and so relatable to everyday life. I will definitely attend his book reading again and again.
Hysterical, raw, real. Perverse humor yet, kindness and love of family.
David is a funny little man, but he just reads excerpts from his books. A better investment is to pick up any of his books you may not have read and a good bottle of wine. You will have the same laughs and save a lot of money.
David Sedaris a very funny writer. His readings are well paced, his timing impeccable. I am a fan and own a couple of his CDs. Judging by the audience laughter. most enjoyed the evening. I didn't. David Sedaris made little effort to talk to the audience, to recognize where he was speaking and tell some anecdotes or local stories that one could not find on his many CDs. His schtick is to read pieces he has written. Perhaps some of his readings are not yet recorded but pretty much all he does is read. Although the venue has good acoustics, the sound system failed me occasionally leaving me wondering what everyone was laughing at. I wished for a replay. I had paid $48 for a ticket bear the back of the hall. Had I instead bought one or two of his CDs, I would have heard his great humourous readings clearly and been able to pass the CDs on for others to enjoy. I got no benefit from hearing him in person.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed myself as did the group I was with. David had an idea what he would read ahead of time, but left room for changes to be made on the fly. He spoke clearly and was funny as always.
