    Buy the DVD instead

by Curmudgeon on 2015-08-04Old Whaling Church - Edgartown

David Sedaris a very funny writer. His readings are well paced, his timing impeccable. I am a fan and own a couple of his CDs. Judging by the audience laughter. most enjoyed the evening. I didn't. David Sedaris made little effort to talk to the audience, to recognize where he was speaking and tell some anecdotes or local stories that one could not find on his many CDs. His schtick is to read pieces he has written. Perhaps some of his readings are not yet recorded but pretty much all he does is read. Although the venue has good acoustics, the sound system failed me occasionally leaving me wondering what everyone was laughing at. I wished for a replay. I had paid $48 for a ticket bear the back of the hall. Had I instead bought one or two of his CDs, I would have heard his great humourous readings clearly and been able to pass the CDs on for others to enjoy. I got no benefit from hearing him in person.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed myself as did the group I was with. David had an idea what he would read ahead of time, but left room for changes to be made on the fly. He spoke clearly and was funny as always.

David Sedaris was funny and entertaining!

by Anonymous on 2015-05-19Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

David is funny and witty and has a morbid sense of humour. I enjoyed listening to him read some of his writings. He was fun to listen to during the Q and A. He was fun to meet and have my book signed. I would see him again!

    Not bad, not great

by mrwoo on 2015-05-19Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

I've read some of Sedaris's work and heard him on This American Life, and quite enjoy his take on things. However, seeing him at the Sony Centre didn't really add much to my previous experiences as is was little more than a man at a podium reading from his books. I've seen book readings before, but always at much smaller venues, and never for $75 a seat. We did hear some unreleased items in the form of diary entries (soon to be released in a book), and he did a bit of a Q and A at the end which was nice because he went off script a bit. Unfortunately, this segment included a really foul joke about child abuse, which somewhat took the air out of the room. Finally, he repeatedly spoke of a house in "West Essex" - presumed this was Connecticut or something, but learned later that it's actually in England. Is this something everybody just knows? There was another example as well that I can't recall. Anyway, this is annoying habit even among friends!

    Clever Guy fails to connect

by CanStageRegular on 2015-05-19Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

The Airlines lost David's luggage on Saturday and as a result he was not on his game for Saturday night's performance. He can be quite clever and charming but chose to focus on garbage, both literally (by the side of the road) and figuratively (toe nails removed from the toe, tumors removed from his body and fed to turtles). He appeared on stage like the central character in a play called Haunted Hillbilly.

    A Thoroughly Entertaining Evening

by Fanforalongtime on 2015-05-19Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

David Sedaris was funny and witty. As much as I enjoy reading his stories, hearing him tell them is better. If you want to laugh out loud, go and listen to Mr. Sedaris.

    David Sedaris was David Sedaris

by MrsTupper on 2013-11-24Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

He completely delivered. If you're a fan of his stories on This American Life, then you've heard David Sedaris speak. His performance was less performance and more a recounting of some of his favourite stories mixed in with some personal anecdotes and Q&A thrown in. A delightful evening.

David Sedaris presents his written material in person as wonderfully as he presents it in his numerous books. A great and ridiculously funny evening. If the chance arises, definitely go see him :)

    England and Family

by Funnybone on 2013-11-15Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

We've seen David Sedaris a few times and this performance was familiar in style. The content seemed to be more about his family -- his partner and his sisters.More than other shows, I found some of these comments to be a little more sad than funny. As usual he has a way of seeing the humour in daily events and has a gift for presenting them in a unique style. In addition he is very open in divulging inner aspects of his thoughts and family "secrets" and the juxtaposition of his almost childlike appearance and voice and his provocative and at times scatalogical comments thrill the audience. And he certainly gave us that. He is a gentle man, courteous to his audience and fans and that is why it is surprising some of this things that come out of his mouth. It would be interesting to hear from him if he could explain why he does this when audiences are not his fans such as the story he at the Chicago Exhibition.

A pleasant suprise turned into a great evening

by klaw on 2013-11-15Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

Sedaris was extremely amusing and the audience could not wait to hear another word from him. He did not disappoint, talking for close to two hours with one amusing story after another.

    Quirky and Engaging

by meritage on 2013-11-15Chan Centre For The Performing Arts - Vancouver

This was an incredible opportunity for David Sedaris to share his perspective on life. His wit is even more quirky in person, as he gives life to his stories! We will be certain to see him again if he comes back to Vancouver.

by Wildcat06 on 2013-04-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

David is nothing short of pure genius. He is witty, intelligent, and for the most part he is saying what most of us are thinking with a clever and humourous delivery The Sony Centre is a lovely setting for a show like this. Highly recommended

    Laughs With David

by Deck on 2013-04-15Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

Although the disappointment was with the absence of his new book - on the plus side, were the facts that my forgotten C.C. card was returned to me, some new books were discovered. The show itself was a hit. David had the audience in his hands from the moment he took the stage.

    David Sedaris is excellent live

by mkmatt on 2013-04-14Sony Centre For The Performing Arts - Toronto

This is the first time I've attended a show that was only a reading by an author, but David Sedaris didn't disappoint. While he's reading off a page, he has the timing and instincts of a comedian, and the entire audience enjoyed the show. Having listened to some of his audio books that were recordings of live shows I had a good idea what to expect, and the show at the Sony Centre lived up to my high expectations. I'd definitely go see him again.
