Alan Doyle on Tour

In 2019, Alan Doyle released the single "We Don't Wanna Go Home," a duet with B.C. country star Dean Brody. It's a title that perfectly sums up Doyle's career on the road. As frontman for Canadian roots-rock institution Great Big Sea, he spread the beery good cheer from coast to coast and beyond for the better part of 20 years, and since that band's dissolution in 2013, he's continued to live up to his well-earned road-warrior reputation as a solo artist. Backed by his reliable support crew The Beautiful Beautiful Band, Doyle delivers a healthy serving of Great Big Sea classics and selections from his three solo albums to date: Boy On Bridge (2012), So Let's Go (2015) and A Week at the Warehouse (2017). An Alan Doyle show is both an occasion to have a good time and to support a good cause — he's known to donate proceeds from ticket sales to mental-health and addiction-treatment organizations.

Alan Doyle in Concert

As a singer/guitarist for the rambunctious roots combo Great Big Sea, Alan Doyle helped transform the Newfoundland band from regional pub phenomenon into one of Canada's most successful and celebrated bands. Between their 1993 formation and 2013 dissolution, the group racked up seven Top 10 placements and 11 Juno Award nominations. And since launching his solo career with 2012's Boy on Bridge, he hasn't relented in his lifelong mission to deliver joyously anthemic, pint-sloshing, Celtic-kissed singalongs. But Doyle's musical pursuits have run parallel to an eclectic acting career that includes credits in such films as Winter's Tale and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. (Fittingly, he's developed an ongoing creative partnership with another singing actor, Russell Crowe, who invited Doyle to write for his 2005 album, My Hand, My Heart, leading to a full-album collaboration between the two, The Crowe/Doyle Songbook, Vol. III, in 2011.) Doyle's myriad achievements earned him entry into the Order of Canada in 2017, and he's reflected upon his charmed life in two bestselling memoirs, Where I Belong (2014) and A Newfoundlander in Canada (2018).

    The Whole Package Canadian Style

by WCIrishlass on 2013-02-09ST. JAMES COMMUNITY SQUARE - Vancouver

Alan's candid humour throughout was gloriously unexpected, the fact that the concert was in a facility that once operated as a church inspired many a tale of his alter boy altercations and his fear that he would be struck down by lightning for some of his less 'churchly' subject matter. His coup d'etat were his opening and closing numbers when he took to the mic with simply his voice, a ballad and a nation's worth of passion to sing about life on the rock in true balladeer style. Alan's characteristic voice, simply cut to the heart of everyone in the room.

    AlanDoyle trio

the show was fantastic - humour, stories and wit and of course the music kept us all wanting for more - it's been years since I have seen Alan and the GBS live - perhaps a folk festival in Winnipeg - which is really a better venue to really appreciate this music. A big thanks goes out to Steve Edge from Rogue Folk for loaning much of the equipment needed to put on this event

    Ohwow Sogood ohwowowowow

Alan, Craig and Kendra are amazing. Alan does a range if stuff from his solo album, great big sea stuff, and even new music. He showcases really epic talent with his bandmates, especially Craig's "king for a day", and is never shy of a story or joke while on stage. He always looks like he's having fun, and is willing to banter with the audience as well and schedule time for requests. I would easily pay triple what I paid to go see him, and cannot wait for GBS to come to Vancouver in March.

    Doyle Keeps Rocking

by MusicFan23 on 2012-06-16RIO Theatre on BROADWAY - Vancouver

It was kind of weird to see him with a different band (even though Kris the drummer was the same) but Alan Doyle is still himself, having fun, cracking jokes and playing great music. I'm not the biggest fan of the girl he had with him, she's got a weird stage presence that's sometimes distracting to the rest of the show, plus, she missed some harmonies pretty bad. She's easy to forget though, Doyle and the rest of the band were fantastic.

What a great show!! I've seen Great Big Sea a number of times, and seeing Alan on his solo tour was just as good! Very intimate show, and they had me dancing the entire time!!

Wonderful night full of sing and laughter

by ktkm on 2012-06-14RIO Theatre on BROADWAY - Vancouver

Lovely to hear Alan on his own. His music is wonderful and his chat hilarious. Were a few kinks to work out performance wise, but was only second concert on his tour, and knowing Alan he'll have them worked out quickly. This is a concert tour not to be missed, though I admit I would have liked a few more GBS material, but then it was through the group's music that I became a fan of Alan. It was also great to see Cory Tetford on stage again. Opener Dustin Bentall was great; needs some more experience, but will definitely get that on this tour. Good luck to both Dustin and Alan.

Alan and the band were musically tight but very loose and easygoing onstage. It was a great show that we totally enjoyed!!

Alan Doyle straight from the heart!

by peglet on 2012-06-13The Garrick Centre - Winnipeg

Great show, wonderful musicians & Alan Doyle was an outstanding entertainer, I also was really pleased with the venue, it 's a retro, cool Wpg bldg no bad seats in that place. Alan Doyle really connected with the audience and was so gracious to his opening act & also to his band. First time I have ever seen him in person & I was very impressed. I would definitely go see him again. He also seemed to be really enjoying the evening. It felt like we were all at a big party.

    Super fun, as always!

Alan proved again why he's been a live show success for 20+ years. His songs were wide-ranging in style (loved his Crowe/Doyle collaborations) and whether hard-rocking, folk, or ballad, they swept you right into the mood and often on to your feet. And best of all, even though he was on his own up front, he was still goofy and chatty and made you feel like you were in the middle of an over-sized kitchen party! I had a blast!
