  • The Nutcracker by Alberta Ballet was fantastic!

by KateBL on 2016-12-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

It's been the best Nutcracker performance I have seen in the past few years. It's our family tradition to see the Nutcracker every year. The costumes, the story, the performance, the orchestra and the live music were amazing! My 7 year-old also loved it! The experience was great, it was our first time visit to NAC - great venue, nice public and atmosphere.

  • Nutcracker is a great show

I took my 5 year-old daughter to the show and we both had fun. The dancing was great, the costumes, the music, everything was enjoyable and professional. We love this show. The nit-picky stuff is the 'snow' swept of the stairs at the VERY beginning stays on stage for the entire performance and it's distracting - clean it up! The other thing (this is really nit-picky of me but still, it was a distraction) is that the background has a clock that shows the same time throughout the first act, even though the night is clearly progressing, and when Clara wakes up it's supposed to be after midnight. Finally, I don't know why Drosselmeyer has to accompany Clara throughout the entire journey. He's a creepy looking fellow that you don't really want to see the whole time. He should, as in other productions, basically go away for the second half. Now, that's a lot of negative words for a show that we REALLY liked. We can't wait to go again.

I took my granddaughters to the Nutcracker, Alberta Ballet. It was their first time at the NAC. They were duly impressed. I was also thoroughly taken by the Alberta Ballet's rendition of this Christmas clasic: the Nutcracker. The set was amazing, seamlessly changing from scene to scene to create colourful and stunning backdrops. The costumes were exquisite, dazzling, breathtaking. I had a few Ahhhhh moments as the dancers came on stage. I could see the sparkle in my granddaughters` eyes. And of course our very own NAC orchestra did not disappoint. I took my granddaughters at the edge of the pit to show them where the musicians sat so they could see and imagine them playing as the dancers floated and leaped on stage. The lighting set the scenes perfectly, there again rendering the atmosphere delightful. May I recommend something? When the NAC puts on family shows like the Nutcracker, would it be possible for the patrons (especially children with parents) be allowed in the pit to have demonstrations of the instruments... They could hear the difference between an oboe, a clarinet, a bassoon, they could delight in seeing how the percussion instruments are played...etc.

Very beautiful!!! Amazing performance and I liked the idea to put some kids for actually doing the kids parts. I will go again next year!!!

  • Disappointed

We felt this version was lacking. Fewer dancers and overall lower technical value of the dancing, and no comic relief for the young children attending. Felt like there had been budget cuts.

I went with my three year old and my wife and we enjoyed the experience very much. Everyone is dressed in their Sunday finest and it is a nice outing. I loved it. Very memorable. The only reason it wasn't 5 stars is because a lady brought in a bag of chips and the crackling sound of the bag overpowered the music on a number of occasions. Please do not bring chips into a ballet people.

Was excellent! The dancers, decors , costumes and music were all superb! Some of the dancers were nice enough to pose with young girls making the event even more special! There was costumes for dress up and tables for coloring. Well organized. Bravo!

  • Spectacular!!

by CP1234 on 2014-12-08National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Wanted to get in the Christmas spirit, this certainly did the trick! Took my 18 year-old daughter and 3 univeristy students who have been stressed by exam scedule - this was a delightful respite from everything. I have seen the Nutcracker many times, this by far was the best performance I have seen.

  • Very good production of The Nutcracker

by LauraAB on 2014-12-08National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

The Alberta production of The Nutcracker was very good. It was quite a bit different from the National Ballet production and made a nice change. The cast was excellent. However, I do prefer the National Ballet production.
