  • The Nut cracker was good

by British on 2010-12-07National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Not the best Nutcracker I have seen. I missed seeing a life size nutcracker throughout the performance. The mice were very real, which wasn't well received by the person I took with me. I liked them. The dance performance was very good and some of the performers excellent. It had been a few years since I last saw it.

Trumpet players were on their blackberries throughout the performance. Found that a little distracting.

This was a beautiful version of The Nutcracker... I loved that the Alberta Ballet kept the more traditional version which made it much more enjoyable for my 5 year old!!! Hope they come back again next year!!!

  • I had the time of my life

    by Clemantina52 on 2010-12-06National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time that I ever saw the Nutcracker and it was AMAZING! All the details were accounted for and that is definitely something I look for. It was all so creative and explicit and it just blew my mom and I away!! This is definitely something for the entire family to enjoy and a great early Christmas present :)

The costumes, props and dancing itself were very good and I enjoyed the performance. What I didn't like was the constant chatting/crying/tantrums of all the young children in the audience. I found it very distracting

  • The set and costumes can't be beat!

by Eveline on 2010-12-06National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed my evening at The Nutcracker presented by Alberta Ballet Canada. Tchaikovski's musical masterpiece was so very well performed by the NAC orchestra. The sets were beautiful. The highlight of the evening for me was the magnificent costumes. So much detail and work and those splendid designs! They were every aspiring ballet dancer's dream! I was disappointed with the quality of the dancing. Though many of the dancers were children from the area and it is understandable that they are just beginning their careers, most of the professional dancers' performances were mediocre. There were exceptions. Melissa Boniface who played the snow tsarina and Mariko Kondo and Patrick Doe who played the sugar plum fairy and her cavalier were quite good. I also enjoyed the dancing of the Flowers, performed by the artists of Alberta Ballet and Students of School of Alberta Ballet. Throughout most of the performance, I was straining my neck to see around a tall gentleman who sat in the seat in front of me, which was extremely irritating to say the least. But, one can do little to predict or to prevent this from occuring. Having a really good view sometimes comes down to simple luck. All in all, I did enjoy my evening.

The Arabian dance was a standout as were the sets. The yound dancers were elegant and just as professional as Alberta Ballet.

  • Perfect Fantasy for my three year old and me.

by SugarPlumYum on 2010-12-06National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Saturday Night was a magical night at the NAC for me and my three year old daughter. We were both dazzled by the stunning costumes and sets created for the Nutcracker by the Alberta Ballet. The orchestra provided an amazing score complete with a chorus in Act two. The dance, although not the best I have seen (can't compare with the Kirov Ballet that I saw in London England) was totally acceptable. My daughter sat on my lap for the whole first hour and watched in amazement. I would definitely recommend this performance. The Sugar Plum Party beforehand with crafts, Tim Bits and Tutus to dress up in also went over well with my daughter. A great way to introduce a child to live performance!

  • Grand, but not dated, upscale production - Bravo!

The dancing was tremendous (I do not wish to discount the talent of the many dancers) but some of the costumes were particularly striking and memorable. The wolves, both their costumes and movement, were magnetic! And both the small mice and large mice costumes were also especially good.

  • Magical!

  • Nutcracker 2010

    by Ballet123 on 2010-12-04National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

I go with my daughter every year. The 2010 nutcracker has some spectacular costumes and a few of the sets are amazing. I would recommend it but I have to say the previous nutcrackers I would have called amazing. Walking away. I could only put my mild sense of disappointment down to an overall lack of magic. The royal winnipeg version has a more whimsical, child focus and magical feel to it. This was more adult. So good, worth seeing but not my favorite.

  • Great show!

Our family enjoyed it very much. The second act of the Nutcracker is usually long but in this production time just flew! Would see it next year for sure.
