Arcade Fire's Island show opened with two carefully selected acts that both represented different styles of the socially conscious and melodically complex band.
The Sadies, a staple in the Toronto music scene, brought their high energy, family-influenced, country-twang-heavy rock to get the crowd moving. From long guitar duels to mom and son harmonies they truly raised the crowd's energy and played to the more folk-side of Arcade Fire's fans and sound.
Next, Janelle Monae wowed the entire crowd with her first-ever Canadian performance. Filled with theatrics, dance moves, and even a wave of black and white balloons, Monae raised the energy with her pop vocals and captivating stage presence.
Finally, with the crowd reared up, Arcade Fire entered to fan frenzy. In my mind it seemed near impossible to raise the electricity and energy in the crowd and more, but just with the presence of Regine in her gold-sequen dress, or Win towering over the crowd, brought new levels of excitement. Beginning with new songs from their album, Suburb, and then moving back to many favourites from Funeral and Neon Bible, Arcade Fire had the crowd cheering, singing, and clapping through the entire set.
After an exhilarating encore, a complex light and video show that included a Suburbs backdrop and road side billboard, the band left at 10:30 to extreme delight. Overall, the only hamper on the night was the 2+ hour time it took to simply get from the stage to the ferry dock.
