  • Aretha Franklin at Radio City

by DrLotech on 2009-09-21Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Great performance, but too short. If the show was really called "Greatest Hits" there is an album that pretty much should have been the set list. She did not sing "Natural Woman, Say a Little Prayer or Rock Steady to name a few conspicuously absent "Greatest Hits". That being said, the show itself was beautifully executed but it was a bit disappointing to miss out on hearing most of my favourite songs live.

  • Aretha Franklin still crankin

My first time at Radio City - amazing venue. Aretha started slow and it took her a few songs to warmupbut once she got fired up it was a fantastic show with the crowd dancing in the aisles

It's obvious why she is named the "Queen of Soul". She still belts out those vocals in her unique style that sent chills up & down my spine. Her band & back up singers were amazing.

  • Queen of Soul Reigns Supreme

by DetroitSoul on 2009-07-13Fox Theatre Detroit - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

There is no doubt why Aretha has retained her title as Queen of Soul, there is simply no comparison to her voice, her presence, her style and her ability to rock. Seeing her in her hometown of Detroit, in the legendary Fox Theatre (which has hosted such luminaries as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and numerous Motown Revues) was an unforgettable experience. The first half of her show focused on classic hits including Respect, Chain of Fools and Think. It took her a few songs to really warm up her voice, but once she did, the old Aretha and that unforgettable voice commanded the show. In her second half she opened with the classic Today I Sing the Blues and a song from her upcoming album (plus a cosutme change - from white gown to black sequined gown). She then took a seat behind the piano and played a tribute to DInah Washington and BB King. She also did a tribute song to Micheal Jackson - a gospel song. The only disappointment was the small attendance of the show - the theatre was less than half full, a testament to the tough times Detroit is currently facing.
