  • Long live the Queen of Soul

by CaroleLe on 2009-11-10National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

FANTASTIC - The crowd was wild! Everybody was standing up, signing along and dancing in front of their seats - Unfortunately I'm only 5 feet tall and I had a 6 foot gentleman in front of me - I couldn't see her - but I could hear her! When she sang a slow song, you could have heard a pin drop.

  • Aretha is definitely the "Queen of Soul"

Aretha gave a superb perforrmance and holds up to her name of the "Queen of Soul"

  • Aretha Franklin - what an icon

by Deden on 2009-11-10National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

I loved her show. So happy to have seen her. What a voice. The only negative thing I would say is that I would have expected it to last a bit longer, for the price we paid. But, no regrets in having gone.

  • ARETHA ROCKS!

I recently took my Mom to see Aretha Franklin at the NAC for her birthday. We were only able to purchase the most expensive tickets. They were well worth it! We sat in row J of the Orchestra section. The seats were PERFECT! We both enjoyed the concert immensly. Ms. Franklin has staying power that not a lot of other artists have, or will ever have. Thank you Ms. Franklin for coming to our city and making my Mom's birthday a most memorable one!

not long enough too much band not enough Aretha she sang for no more than an hour not much when you spend $300 for a pair of tickets

  • Aretha

Great voice, excellent band, but I paid good money to hear the music she became famous on...not Gospel music!

  • Aretha- short and sweet

by DivinaDivine on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Having been raised on Aretha and having had her as a musical role model for my own singing, it was such a thrill to get a 5th row ticket for this fantastic show! The Queen of Soul is such a presence of greatness on stage...her musicality is undeniable....Bridge Over Troubled Waters showcased her incredible piano talent and although many of her songs were sung an octave lower than the original versions, she's still got "The Voice". Her band and back-up singers were outstanding....however, my BIG disappointment was how short a time Aretha was actually on stage...The show didn't begin until 8:15, with the band performing for 15 minutes alone, then Aretha started at 8:30 and 40 minutes later, she left for a 15 minute break...Upon her return, her songs were powerful , others were fun with her encouragement to sing and dance along and suddenly it was 9:40 and she was thanking the audience and leaving the stage... one lone encore ...I wanted MORE, MORE ,MORE!!!

  • graceful queen of soul

by mazole on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

she was beautiful, her voice was awesome/beautiful. it was a thrill to see someone I have been listening to all my life..it was just a teeny bit disappointing but totally understandable that she couldn't sing Respect the way she used to...but it was still a dream come true to see her live and a thrill none the less.

  • The Queen of Soul Visited Ottawa

by pharmerphil on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

I was not only impressed with Aretha last night but also her band/orchestra who were amazing. My kind of music, my kind of energy and I am glad I had the opportunity to see her on what I am led to believe is her first performance in the Nation's Capital. (I was almost expecting dancers to start doing flips etc during "The Old Landmark!")

  • Aretha drove the devil from the NAC!

by LouLouBelle on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

An amazing event sold out, orchastra, back up singers and the Queen , the Diva herself was fantastic. She had the crowd on our feet most of the time.

  • does anybody really care about my opinion

by GetThatFeeling on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

THE venue in ottawa is the nac...the sound was equivalent to being in a hockey arena...THE queen of soul is also THE queen of gospel...so, after the usual singing of some of her hits, her 20 minute rendition of 'bridge over trouble water" (with the queen at the grand piano) was nothing short of BRILLIANT! what a buzz! what an experience!

  • Aretha jived!

by powerpuff on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

I was so thrilled to see the QUEEN of SOUL performing in person. At this age she sure can still BELT out the tunes, she had the entire audience on their feet. It will be very memorable for me.

  • Aretha is STILL the queen!

by Anonymous on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

An unforgettable night. Aretha may not be able to hit all of the crazy high notes she could in her 20s, but her voice is every bit as powerful, beautiful and soulful as it ever was. I would not only see her again (should I be lucky enough to have the chance), i'd tell anyone who knows anything about music that she is the best show I have ever seen, and I have seen over 400 performances.

The show was wonderful! NAC band out did themselves. Please come again.

  • Queen of Soul was yelling at us!

by KatOttawaSouth on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

I'm glad I finally saw Aretha. Now I don't have to again. The background musicians were amazing; the crowd was very welcoming: we stood, danced, clapped, and sang. The NAC was hot - temperature wise. Uncomfortable. We were getting exhausted watching her exhaustion set in. And I felt that Aretha was yelling at us the whole time. Difficult to make out the words to her favour music. Not to mention that her dress choice was not the best.

  • You still have your beautiful voice Aretha

    by rxs1907 on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Could have been more but with her age and health she was a blessing to see as there are not too many Motown icons left. Simple stage no theatrics, back screen video or any dazzle and flair, as for the ticket prices too much for the show.

  • A once in a lifetime experience!

    by ams127 on 2009-11-09National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

The show was fantastic. Our seats were perfect. Her voice was unforgettable. Her presence on stage was gracious, warm and charming. The only downside for me -- and for the 10 of us who bought tickets together -- was the temperature. It was uncomfortably warm. I had to stand on the aisle near the door for a few minutes because of it. Otherwise, I would have rated the whole experience an Amazing 5 Stars.

  • Best pop/soul vocal performance I ever heard!

by EddieJ on 2009-09-22Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Why was I there??? My wife celebrated her 60th birthday on Sept. 2nd. Aretha Franklyn is her all time favorite performer. So I decided to get her tickets to see Aretha at Radio City Music Hall. But to keep it a surprise, I had to do a lot of Online arranging. You see, we live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I bought the event tickets for Friday Sept. 18, booked the necessary Airline Flights and Hotel on 52nd Street. So needless to say, it was an expensive concert for us. My wife was absolutely surprised and excited when she found out. We arrived in New York City (first time) on the Thursday before the Friday show. We were very excited arriving at the theatre before 7:30 ( the tickets said the show started at 8). The show didn't start until about 8:45, but hey!!! she's the Queen of Soul. However, one thing did dissapoint me. When we arrived early, I explained to the lady in charge of the usherettes, why we were there and how far we had travelled, just for this show. I had a booklet with me from my wife's copy of the Aretha Frankln Box Set. I asked the lady if she would ask Aretha's management to take the booklet backstage and have it signed by Aretha. The guy the lady talked to said Aretha signed a few things after Thursday's show, but wouldn't be signing anythuing tonight. My wife was disappointed, but it didn't last for long. When Aretha arrived onstage, the theatre became alive with excitement that didn't stop until the show was over. I could not get over the fact that in this stage of her life, her vocals are still as powerful as if she had just walked out of the studio after recording "Respect". As my wife said at the end of the show... "Bravo Aretha" !!!
