An interesting artist direction to a time held classic. I enjoyed the acting which I thought was very well performed by all the actors but my expectations were of a set leaning toward the traditional representation of this Dickens classic. If the play wasn’t so tightly associated with Christmas I think it would have been terrific.
Went with friends to see the performance and had a wonderful time. A familiar story told in a different way that really held your attention. The time flew by.
When we arrived and got an explanation on this version of the play A Christmas Carol I was disappointed. But once into the play I was amazed at how well acted and presented it was. The actors deserved a standing ovation for a job well done and the presentation was just awesome. If I had the time I would go back to see it again. Does that tell you how much I enjoyed it. Very little in the stage set up but boy it was well done....Bravo to the people who put this together and all the great actors.
I am someone who can appreciate modern and minimalist productions but this was awful. They take no effort to warn people so I will: Your kids will not have fun at this, there is no Christmas warmth in this play. Don't waste your money. All most people want to do is see a nice play and enjoy their holidays, but this play couldn't handle the idea. Everything has to be a lesson Can't anything just be fun anymore?
I went with my sister and mother; we all simply loved it! Captivating, entertaining, incredible!
My 9 year old grandson and I really enjoyed the performance very much and hope the be able to take him to more appropriate shows in the future. It was the first time in many years I had been at the NAC and found the renovations very nice.
The stage and props and lighting were amazing!! Acting was out of this world and great audience interaction.
I liked the play, did not love it. But I do get what the producer is trying to get the audience to see.
Very enjoyable interpretation of the Dickens' classic. Light, fun and engaging. Despite the fact that there were no intermissions, it did not feel long at all. Kids enjoyed it, although kids younger than 7-8 may get scared.
A Christmas Carol is my favorite Dickens' novel. This interpretation was one of the best live productions I have seen, from the set design, costumes, colour and of course, the acting. Thank you for an enjoyable evening.
This was the worst theatrical production I've attended in years. A well- written Director's Note in the program explained that since most patrons will have seen many versions of 'A Christmas Carol', this production would leave sets and costumes to the imagination of the audience. All of the characters wore white and the minimalist sets were also lacking any colour. Bird cage sized models of sets were displayed in a forest of artificial Christmas trees in the lobby. This was interesting, but a poor substitute for a full production. The lamest aspect of this approach was the distribution of sample fabric swatches and a plastic turkey dinner, which took about 15 minutes to pass amongst the audience at the beginning of the play. This effort to give the audience a 'feel' for the production was truly feeble. Overall, a complete disaster.
Initial discomfort at the unusual presentation was quickly replaced with wonder & enjoyment.
I really enjoyed this experience. It was unlike any other piece of the theatre I have ever seen. The simplicity of the sets and costumes allowed much room for the imagination. Not only did it allow me to see A Christmas Carol in a new light, it also provided me with the opportunity to walk a second in someone else's shoes. I found that aspect of the production extremely thought provoking.
I went to see A Christmas Carol with my 7 year old nephew and although I enjoyed the show, I quickly realized that it was not for his age group. The cast was amazing and I enjoyed the obvious message that there is a place for "disabled" actors in theatre. I truly stand by that statement and think they should be more present in theatre and pretty much everywhere. But my nephew could not grasp the beautiful message and of course, during the play was not a good time to explain..... and afterwards, when I tried to explain sign language, and what is blindness, it was too late for him to appreciate it. The story itself was also confusing to him, the mise en scène was targeting adults. Should you attend with children, I recommend you review the story before hand as it is not the proper venue for an introduction. Lastly, I loved the simple visuals of the presentation.
My mother and I were in awe with this beautiful and inspiring play. We adored the unique reproduction of it and found ourselves reminiscing about the magic of love and generosity. A must see!
We all, from ages 6 to 71, loved this production. The story telling was amazing. The interpretation and what is left to the imagination was intriguing.
The play was excellent but the only thing I didn't like is the white décor. At the beginning they showed us sample of the costume and they were really nice and colorful and seeing the white decor didn't feel like Christmas and there's no Christmas tree.
National Arts Centre's A Christmas Carol was a very innovative take on Dickens' classic tale. The way they played to the imagination of the audience through focusing on the dialogue between the actors and the innovative costume and set design (everything in black and white) was really well done. The incorporation of multi-talented actors with exceptionalities was inspired. I was glad I went.
I never read what the play was about. Glade I didn't because I might not of went. It was a great experience. Took my kids (7 & 5). They didn't quite understand what was going on. What a great concept for the blind and the deaf. Great performance. Great job. Merry Christmas
