  • Nutcracker Disappointing

    by 12354 on 2011-01-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

We went to the matinee on Dec 31st and were quite disappointed with this year's performance. The costumes and set design were not as elaborate as in the past and did not do justice to the story. There were too many inexperienced student dancers (which were not advertised as being part of the show when purchasing tickets) and the cast looked mismatched in height the few times that they danced together. Their choreographed steps were out of sync as well. Also a number of near falls and one of the male dancers almost ended up throwing one of the ballerinas onto the floor during one of the dances. I would classify this year's performance as your child's "winter rehearsal" put on by their dance school. Too many inexperienced dancers, boring costumes and set design for the price of the tickets. We expected a professional show and did not receive it.

Not as good as the Moscow ballet.. at times, the dancers seemed off. But it was still worth seeing. I fell asleep during a couple of parts - but my wife said it was really good.

  • Nutcracker 2010 Alberta Ballet not up to snuff.

by kahiko on 2010-12-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Nutcracker was not up to my expectations. After a slow start I found this year's Nutcracker was seemingly dark, with a very Russian portrayal of the characters (not that that was a bad thing). I felt there were too many children on stage as filler acts. One group in one of the early dances were quite heavy on their feet but then corrected that. The 12 or 13 rats that appeared could give anyone in the audience nightmares. It was a good concept tho, as the staging grew very large making the little girl in the story even smaller. Then there was the two arctic wolves that pulled the sled of the Snow Tsarina, they were scary too at first but then I grew to like them. I did like the back half of the 1st act with the blue dancers and even though it was a snow scene there was warmth to this part of the performance. The tiaras were very Russian in design and I think there were some 'pairs' missing in the second half. I found the costume colouring to be of unusual hues. I've seen a few in past bunch of years and found this one not up to my expectations. Was disappointed. Wouldn't recommend this one. oh well, it was a night out and I was so hoping to be entertained.

Awesome production~great dancing by the young dancers.

  • Feast for the eyes and ears

by goldensandra on 2010-12-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The stage and the costumes were brilliant. The first half was nice more theatrical and not enough ballet dancing. The second half was much better more dancing. I was sitting in the LC and the side curtains were not placed at the right angle so I could see all the backstage activity. It was very distracting. I also like the more traditional performances. But it was a beautiful ballet.

  • a superb performance

I recenrly saw the Bolshoi production via satellite ,admittedly with poor reception but this Alberta ballet presentation is far superior in every respect. The sets are ingenious and colourful, the lighting excellent and the children very well rehearsed and very professional. The Corps de Ballet were a delight as were the principal dancers. This is the best production that I can recall ever seeing.

This was one of the most beautiful productions of the Nutcracker I have seen. A job well done by the crew and cast.

Songs of a Wayfarer (by Alberta Ballet) itself was not the strongest piece. I thought the costumes were not done well for it and it was a little scattered. The 'other works', however, were flat out amazing. Face to Face (Banf Centre for the Arts) was contemporary, intriguing and spell-binding. Fantastic dancers, set, costume, lighting, etc. And the final piece, The bliss that from their limbs all movement takes, was magical. Very flowing but rapid, and absolutely exquisitely executed.

  • Wow! Wow! WOW! That's Dance!

by elchacal on 2010-11-20Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Absolute beauty. Closeness to perfection; exhilarating, tear jerking, emotional and deeply moving. Emily's choreography was a dream of perfectly balanced proportions, I could have watched it all night over and over again. O'Day's was completely superb and thought provoking. Navas' left me breathless, with goosebumps, in love and with a renewed respect for human artistic endeavours... The dancers were magnificent and 100% mature in their craft.; the 3 choreographers fantastic imagery and creation would not have worked otherwise... Sensational.

  • Enjoyable by anyone!

by TizzyToday on 2010-04-19Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I have always wanted to attend the Ballet out of curiousity. This was my first Ballet which was amazing! The strength, fluidity and emotional connection of the dancers is incredible. The creativity of the production outstanding. Sometimes you think you've seen everything, but this production was unlike anything I've seen in my life. It was classic, primative, humerous at times and urban. This is a show I would recommend to someone who attends regularly or has misperceptions about what a ballet is supposed to be. I was left is awe and excited to return for more.

  • RE/NAISSANCE was just that !

by Badger on 2010-04-19Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Personally the biggest hit I got was Donald Sales + Mikaila Wallace in their pas de deux piece from William Forsythe's "Herman Schmerman". The pleated yellow skirts were a riot. The coyness of the flirtations were brilliant. Thank you. I saw two teens in Central Park NYC just having a wonderful "go" with each other. Could have been Stanley Park or Kits Beach, too, of course.

World class dance. Amazing. Beautiful. Very well presented. The dancers were stunning.

  • beautiful dancing, but staging less so

by dimdarkdancer on 2010-04-18Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

This was a diverse and very well performed show, let down by apparent timing errors in lighting and curtain management. Such facets should add to, not interrupt a performance, especially one so well enacted. This was a matinee - was an apprentice learning the ropes?

  • Renaissance-rebirth of a promising company

by dancenskatemum on 2010-04-18Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

It was exciting to see a new look for Ballet BC -one that showcases the talented dancers in a genre that works for them. The programs were beautifully performed, with wonderful staging and very creative lighting. Clearly a lot of hard work had gone into bringing the Company back to life , which I am sure can be attributed the leadership of Emily Molnar. My only concern would be the pieces, although all very unique, could appear similar to the unaccustomed eye. Great job Emily and Ballet BC

  • Best of BC Ballet seen yet

by JRSM on 2010-04-18Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

I thought this was an imaginative best performance by BC Ballet. The best I have seen to date. In all three works, the movements were interesting and unique, energetic and strong. In all three pieces the choreography worked together well with the costumes and lighting. I loved the way in which the dancers appeared and disappeared into what seemed like a foggy background. My favorite of the evening was the Galili piece. The blend of classical music with modern dance movements was sublime. The Pite choreography was playful and fun also with incredible energetic movement. Way to go BC Ballet!

  • Modern Dance not Ballet

by GrecoGuy on 2010-04-18Queen Elizabeth Theatre - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

I was expecting to see more classical ballet due to the name of the company. B.C. Ballet but it was modern dance which is not my favorite. Technically the dancers were very good and it is obvious that they are classically trained. If you like modern dance you will like this but it is not my favorite.
