    Alberta Nutcracker - Best ever!

by simplisupr on 2011-01-02Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

My wife and I have seen many productions of the Nutcracker but none compare to the creativity of the production we attended at the QE on December 31. The sets, costumes and choreography were magical and the blend of professional and amatuer performers was both whimsical and seamless. We particularly enjoyed the quality of dancing by the male performer which usually, due to the demographics of the ballet, is dependent on a couple of individuals. In this case, all were terrific. The Alberta Ballet Company has set a bench mark by which we will compare future productions of the Nutcracker. As well, great job by the VSO for the music that made this a memorable evening.

    Alberta Ballet "The Nutcracker"

by barryyoung on 2011-01-02Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I took my wife to see the Nutcracker (done by the Alberta Ballet) on Dec.31 for her Christmas Present. It was very enjoyable for both child and adult. The QE is the only place you'd want to see it in Vancouver. The Orchestra was outstanding, the performers were great. Stage props. were good (not outstanding), Dancers were Very Good. I was very glad we went and would highly recommend this performance to everybody.

Was very enjoyable and recommend for children. The variety of ballet dancing and movements were very beautiful and graceful to watch.

Passionate and beautiful in every way!

by Kriddy04 on 2011-01-02Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

This is my favourite ballet to start with, but this performance? Top notch. I dragged my husband to it, and he was so inspired and moved by it that he wants to add theatre productions to our calendar on a frequent basis! The set and effects were beyond impressive, and the dancers impeccable. Thank you for the memorable evening

    wonderful ballet

by rodeojo on 2011-01-02Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

This was a fantastic production in everyway, the dancing was superb, costumes fabulous, music firstclass. Iloved that it was set in Russia and not a victorian sittingroom.

I watched Nutcracker few years ago performed by Alberta Ballet too. And I liked more that performance than on Dec.30, 2010. Regardless of my opinion I would recommend to people go to theatre more often and watch real art not just Lady Gaga....or......

Most children bored - quite literally - to tears

by COMEDYCHICK on 2011-01-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I haven't been to a ballet since I was a child. I remember being bored during that occasion. However, my son (now 8) collects Nutcrackers and has two Nutcracker books and felt it was a safe move to introduce a finer aspect of the arts. Alas, it was an epic fail. Primarily because he probably needed to see action or a more obvious storyline, with dialogue. Indeed, I was a bit disapointed and realise that we should have been in the first 8 rows or at a modern intepretation. Alberta ballet did a good job. There are some world class ballet dancers there - no doubt. But the nutcracker didn't warm my cockles.

    Embarrasing

by cenire on 2011-01-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I was appauled to see such poor dancing. Initially I wondered at the amateur level of choreography, however as the show progressed I understood. The dancing was terrible. Chorus was not in sync, the dancing was not in sync with the orchestra, several people nearly fell, the lifts and jumps were clunky at best, and the turns were poor, The number of mistakes which were made could not be hidden by the glitsy costumes and set. Why was this show allowed to go on if the dancers were clearly not up to the task?

    Nutcracker was a letdown

by Alexia on 2011-01-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

After seeing the nutcracker every year for about the last 12, I was disappointed in this one. There were some unique and enjoyable twists to the story, but the stage design was simple and the dances were 'simple'. In previous years, the characters were much more developed in terms of creativity and they invoked much more 'wow' and even laughter. I kept waiting to see where the big bucks were spent on this years show and never really saw it. That being said, the dancers did their dances well, and the children were amazing.

Delightful interpretation of a well loved classic

by Jilldg on 2011-01-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The production was beautifully danced, Sumptuously displayed with lots of grace and style. The whole evening was a delight and well designed. The younger members of the corp de ballet were excellent and did Vancouver proud. I have never seen the Alberta Ballet company before and would be happy to go to others of their performances. Very enjoyable when I only booked a ticket on the morning of the performance. I was lucky to get a space.

    The Nutcracker was magic

by senga on 2011-01-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The Nutcracker was absolutely stunning and magic to watch. The dancers are mesmorizing with their intricate moves and it was all choreographed wonderfully to the beautiful music played by the Vancouver Symphony orchestra! The young dancers were so cute and talented.

    Nutcracker Disappointing

by 12354 on 2011-01-01Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

We went to the matinee on Dec 31st and were quite disappointed with this year's performance. The costumes and set design were not as elaborate as in the past and did not do justice to the story. There were too many inexperienced student dancers (which were not advertised as being part of the show when purchasing tickets) and the cast looked mismatched in height the few times that they danced together. Their choreographed steps were out of sync as well. Also a number of near falls and one of the male dancers almost ended up throwing one of the ballerinas onto the floor during one of the dances. I would classify this year's performance as your child's "winter rehearsal" put on by their dance school. Too many inexperienced dancers, boring costumes and set design for the price of the tickets. We expected a professional show and did not receive it.

Not as good as the Moscow ballet.. at times, the dancers seemed off. But it was still worth seeing. I fell asleep during a couple of parts - but my wife said it was really good.

Nutcracker 2010 Alberta Ballet not up to snuff.

by kahiko on 2010-12-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Nutcracker was not up to my expectations. After a slow start I found this year's Nutcracker was seemingly dark, with a very Russian portrayal of the characters (not that that was a bad thing). I felt there were too many children on stage as filler acts. One group in one of the early dances were quite heavy on their feet but then corrected that. The 12 or 13 rats that appeared could give anyone in the audience nightmares. It was a good concept tho, as the staging grew very large making the little girl in the story even smaller. Then there was the two arctic wolves that pulled the sled of the Snow Tsarina, they were scary too at first but then I grew to like them. I did like the back half of the 1st act with the blue dancers and even though it was a snow scene there was warmth to this part of the performance. The tiaras were very Russian in design and I think there were some 'pairs' missing in the second half. I found the costume colouring to be of unusual hues. I've seen a few in past bunch of years and found this one not up to my expectations. Was disappointed. Wouldn't recommend this one. oh well, it was a night out and I was so hoping to be entertained.

Feast for the eyes and ears

by goldensandra on 2010-12-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

The stage and the costumes were brilliant. The first half was nice more theatrical and not enough ballet dancing. The second half was much better more dancing. I was sitting in the LC and the side curtains were not placed at the right angle so I could see all the backstage activity. It was very distracting. I also like the more traditional performances. But it was a beautiful ballet.
