About

Christopher Plummer's Tony Award-winning tour de force is an unforgettable portrayal of legendary actor John Barrymore, a man of colossal talent and contradictions, and one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of all time.

It's all here in William Luce's "fiendishly entertaining" (The New York Times) play: the wives and the women... the drink and the profanity... the notoriety and the glory... in an evening of great theatre that is made all the more indelible by Christopher Plummer who is "nothing short of sensational" (The New York Post).

With the entire original Broadway creative team reunited, BARRYMORE returns to Toronto's historic Elgin Theatre for 30 performances only.

It was witty, it was sad, it was entertainment at its best, with a performance I can't imagine anyone else matching. Don't miss it.

    An evening to remember

by tuitui on 2011-01-31Elgin Theatre - Toronto

To see anyone perform at the height of their power is thrilling, be it in the arts or sports. This was such an event. Christopher Plummer was absolutely fabulous and he owned both the stage and the audience from the moment he appeared. The material itself was wonderfully buoyant allowing Plummer to demonstrate his ability over both comedy and drama as he effortlessly shifted from one to the other. Yet another reminder of why I will always love 'live'.!

    An Absolutely Superb Production

by MyMomIsJoyce on 2011-01-30Elgin Theatre - Toronto

We attend a recent performance of Barrymore at The Elgin - what a night! Christopher Plummer is superb. His performance stands out in my mind as among the best I have seen. You might think a one-man show would be unable to captivate from start to finish. Think again. He is riveting and I, like my sister and Mom who joined me, hung on his every word. His portrayal of John Barrymore is masterful. An opportunity to meet Christopher Plummer after the show (my Mother and he attended Montreal HIgh so many years ago) topped off a perfect evening. He is as engaging and eloquent in person as he is on stage. Little wonder he has received so many accolades throughout his career. There are few productions that I would see a second time - this is definitely at the top of my list. Congratulations to all who were responsible for the performance - it was tremendous!

    BARRYMORE

    by ejw44 on 2011-01-29Elgin Theatre - Toronto

Stunning! Christopher Plummer was superb! Could have watched him for hours. Can't say enough about him but seeing him on stage for the first time was delightful. A mesmerizing story as well. I have just dug out an old book of my fathers - The Barrymores - want to know more about this interesting family. But Christopher was BARRYMORE! Cudos to William Luce for a wonderful script. One liners were superb. My only complaint? Was over too quickly!

by havelocklois on 2011-01-29Elgin Theatre - Toronto

I cannot adequately express how absolutely amazing Christopher Plummer was in "Barrymore". It was revitting from beginning to end . We were drawn into Barrymore immediately and ever so effortlessly. The show was a wonderful mixture of being informative, touching, powerful, funny, sad..it ran the gamut of emotions. I would definitely recommend seeing it and I have to anyone I have spoken with since seeing it on its opening night.
