BC Lions History

The BC Lions are the fifth oldest active franchise in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Founded in 1954, the Lions have made 10 appearances in the Grey Cup championship game and have won the cup six times: in 1964, 1985, 1994, 2000, 2006 and 2011. The BC Lions have claimed the Grey Cup twice on their home turf, including their notable 1994 victory over the former Baltimore Football Club, which prevented a U.S.-based team from hoisting Canadian football’s top prize. The Lions logged the CFL’s second-longest streak of playoff appearances, running for 20 consecutive seasons between 1997 and 2016. Throughout the BC Lions’ history, roster members have claimed 14 Most Outstanding Rookie Awards, 11 Most Outstanding Canadian Awards and Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards apiece, seven Most Outstanding Player Awards, and five Annis Stukus Trophies for the CFL’s Coach of the Year.

BC Lions at BC Place

The BC Lions are the longest-tenured team to continuously compete at BC Place, starting with its opening in 1983. The stadium has grown in stature across the league, hosting nine Grey Cup championship games, including a Lions victory in 2011. During home games, fans can expect to hear the BC Lions fight song “Roar, You Lions, Roar” and get hyped up with team mascot Leo the Lion. The 54,500-seat multipurpose stadium has also hosted Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC as well as games during the 2010 Winter Olympics and the annual Canada Sevens rugby competition. BC Place is located on the north side of False Creek in downtown Vancouver.

    BC Lions

by Amiyumi on 2009-07-15BC Place - Vancouver

An exhibition game, and an obvious one at that (even to someone who knows very little about the sport). In the end, there were some entertaining moments but I won't be going back to see the Lions play anytime soon.

    Lions Game Was Great

by DRoc on 2009-07-15BC Place - Vancouver

The crowd was jacked, the atmosphere outside before the game, and during the game was great. Not being aloud back in once you go outside - not so great. I understand why this is done, but I had no idea when I went outside at halftime to get some fresh air that I wasn't aloud back in. Why can't you just get re - searched, or have a section so you can go outside but not off the property. I totally understand why it's done, but me personally, I don't wanna be trapped in a building for three hours. It gets hot in there. I was stunned when I tried to re - enter at halftime. No one told me I couldn't get back in. I had no idea. I paid for my tickets, why couldn't I just get re - searched. I was a bit choked. You don't even wanna know how I got back in for the second half.

    Lions games are a Blast!!

by FelionFan on 2009-07-14BC Place - Vancouver

Lions games have a very relaxed environment where everyone is just there for good fun and a good game. We may have lost this one, but we will get them next time!!

    Tabbycats score a victory!!

by Sabbycat on 2009-07-13BC Place - Vancouver

First time ever at BC Place and had an amazing time. Lines for beer and food were longish but not unbearable, atmosphere was fun and good spirited. As a Hamilton fan, I was obviously in the minority but the Lions' fans were gracious hosts and their comments/digs were all in fun; never mean spirited or personal. A great time all round and I will certainly check out some more games this season. One complaint...where were the hot pretzels?? Did I miss them?!!

    Our Loss,their Gain

by Bells on 2009-07-13BC Place - Vancouver

The event was great, a recommended experience. Yet, I would have been more comfortable in my recliner with a cold one, slippers and not being distrubed to stand, sit...stand, sit each time another fan wanted to get a drink, change seats or what ever. The noise level is beyond belief, that at times you could not hear want was being announced. I realize this is what going to a game is all about, but to spend money to not see every play, hear what is taking place or being comfortable in your seat and not asking someone to move as it is your seat, is not my idea of an amazing time.I felt with the loss, let down best describes it, as the experience to get to see the game up front and personal did not go the way I would have thought...a win that so easliy could have been ours and ended up theirs. Oh, and what about that cost to park reasonably close to the stadium? I was forever gratefull of dry weather. So, will this occur anytime soon...again...."No". Will I be watching and cheering our Team... A definite "Yes". One last thing... Thank you Coach Buono for keeping your promise and mentioning the Special Olympics at the game...just living up to the honorary Head Coach title, eh?

    The game sucked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by krissymarie on 2009-07-12BC Place - Vancouver

The game wasn't good at all. The Lions let so many plays happen that they shouldn't have. There were so many opportunities that the didn't capitalize on.

Lion's are putting it together game by game

by fanfour on 2009-07-12BC Place - Vancouver

Free hats for the home opener. The bathrooms have been renovated. The lineups for food didn't seem as long. Lots of security guards available and kept busy. Lots of positive on the field also. A better game this week although the opponent was supposed to be weaker. The Tigercats D-line looked very similar to ours last year and played with a purpose. It was a great evening and the Lions almost made a comeback but Otis Floyd had something to prove.

    good family fun

    by Hammy300 on 2009-07-12BC Place - Vancouver

As a relatively inexpensive family event, I would highly recommend this to other families of pre-teen aged children.

    Lions are always good.

Go to a Lions game, always a good time. Good price too! You won't regret it.

    Lions need some help.

by thegrub on 2009-07-11BC Place - Vancouver

Two passes for interseption touchdowns, not much more to say than that. You can't win when you're helping out your opponents like that. On the defence side, the Lions let too many long running plays happen against themselves. The crowd tried to get the hometown Lions pumped up but as one of those fans, I was let down. Not sure what the cure is, they have the tallent but just don't execute at a high enough percentage.

    Oskee wee wee!

by Nightmare on 2009-07-11BC Place - Vancouver

The BC Lions and BC Place put on a great show on Friday night against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The entertainment on the sidelines kept the crowd in the game when things were slow and when they weren't, the Lions looked great. But, alas, the usually lacklustre Tiger-Cats put on a greater show to take them to only their 3rd Victory in June/July since 2005! WAY TO GO CATS!!!!

Disapointing loss, but a great game

by Jiffy on 2009-07-11BC Place - Vancouver

The home opener was awesome not just because it was the first home game. The Lions threw every they got at the Tigercats at the last minute, but it was he last mistake that cost them the whole game. All in all this is one of the games i don't want to miss.
