Bedouin Soundclash In Concert

Though they formed in the Canadian college town of Kingston, Ontario, Bedouin Soundclash have always felt more spiritually in tune with another Kingston — the one located about 1,800 miles south in Jamaica. The band's love of reggae sounds is embedded right into their name, which was taken from a 1996 album by experimental dub artist Badawi.

On their scrappy 2001 debut Root Fire, Bedouin Soundclash picked up right where The Clash left off nearly two decades prior, finding the common musical language between reggae's clipped guitar riffs and punk's streetwise grit. The band's 2004 follow-up, Sounding a Mosaic, saw them collaborating with a bona fide rasta-punk legend — producer Darryl Jenifer of D.C. hardcore pioneers Bad Brains.

The album proved to be the group's pop breakthrough, with singer/guitarist Jay Malinowski smoothing out his natural rasp to showcase the gentler, more congenial qualities of his voice. The album's opening track — "When the Night Feels My Song" — was a sweet, acoustic sing-along that sounded like it could've been pulled from Bob Marley's unplugged repertoire. Despite (or maybe because of) it being completely out of step with everything else in heavy rotation on modern-rock radio at the time, the song became a massive crossover hit across Canada and the U.K.

Continuing their fruitful partnership with Jenifer, the band released Street Gospels in 2007. It yielded a two more hit singles in the breezy, island-tinged "Walls Fall Down" and the jangly, busker-ready "St. Andrews" (featuring guest growls from Alexisonfire/Gallows member Wade MacNeil), earning a Pop Album of the Year nomination at the Juno Awards.

The band's success spurred the establishment of their own record label, Pirates Blend. It launched with the 2010 release of Malinowski's solo debut, Bright Lights & Bruises, a more piano-oriented singer/songwriter affair.

Later that year, Bedouin Soundclash released its eclectic fourth album, Light the Horizon, which featured "Brutal Hearts," a smoldering duet with indie-pop phenom Coeur de pirate that led to her and Malinowski collaborating on the short-lived project Armistice. After sitting out most of the ‘10s — during which Malinowski unveiled his ambitious art-rock band, The Deadcoast — Bedouin Soundclash resurfaced in 2017 with the single "Clock Work," an anthemic hit of piano-driven soul that sees the band continue to stretch their elastic sound.

    Had a blast!

by Diana on 2020-02-25Théâtre Corona - Montreal

Love smaller venues. Corona Theatre floor standing room is slopped downwards which makes for a great view from anywhere! The show was great! I really enjoyed the band and opening act and felt like Bedouin was sincerely moved by the crowd. Was really something special : )

    Hypnotic Reggae

by Yogaleela on 2011-10-23The Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

I was transported to other times by seeing and listening to the Bedouin Soundclash! There was a moment that I thought I was listening to Bob Marley! ("Where did that come from?" I said to myself.....) Each and every one of the musicians was very good. Jay M's highly hypnotic voice and style of playing was amazing! He is also very cute! I enjoyed the whole experience very much! I was "there" the entire time! Thank you Bedouins!

by Jewmaican on 2011-03-28The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

I am a huge Bedouin Soundclash fan, it was my 5 th time seeing them in less than a year. I made some new fans out of my friends and was elated when I got to jump on stage and sing (mostly dance) with the band ! Great show as usual. I was only disappointed that Charlie Winston was not performing as I thought he was. Look forward to the next show.

    Junofest show entertaining!

by ksawy on 2011-03-28The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

The Bedouin Soundclash show at the Phoenix on Mar. 26 was great! The two opening bands almost outdid the main event though, both with extreme enthusiasm and audience connection. Ben Stevenson and the Wondertones were musically fantastic and Grand Analog was unlike anything else I've ever heard. Odario might be the happiest person in the world-so much fun! 2 complaints: A LOT of wait time between bands and not enough seating available at the venue. Overall, pretty great experience.

This could have been the worst sounding show I have ever been to. One hour to change the set and the first 2 songs could not be understood.

The concert was amazing! Had a great time. The sound was awesome. The only thing is that they had a bit of a weak finale. They could have saved one of the best for last.

Bedouin Soundclash at the Starlite roome

by AJ001 on 2010-11-29The Starlite Room - Edmonton

Great show, very good job by All the bands! I only wished Bedouin Soundclash did more of the singing that night, cause it seemed like he wanted the audience to sing about 50% of the time as opposed to him.

    Charlie Winston was great!

by Rooter on 2010-11-29The Starlite Room - Edmonton

It was a great evening. Although the first act (Micheal) was too long, but good. Charlie Winston was great with the crowd, I really liked him and will now track down a CD. Bedouin was good, but the entire event went way too late. Bedouin didn't start until midnight. Starlite is a great venus to watch this kind of event. Loved the jamming thegroups did together.

    Bedouin Soundclash with Charlie Winston

by bedouinfan on 2010-11-29The Starlite Room - Edmonton

this show was awesome. oneo of the best 3 bad sets i have seen in a very long time. actually, i would say it is the best 3 band set i have seen since Bedouin rolled through thee EEC in 2008. michael rault, a fellow edmontonian, got the crowd dancing and movieng with his indie folk rock grooves. he is a talented performer, watch out for him in the next few years. after Rault came Charlie Winston. i knew nothing about this guy going into this show. he rocked the starlite harder than most bands i have seen there. with his beat boxing, folk rhythyms and great harmonica sounds he had the crowd jumping and singing along even though they didnt know the words. i highly reccomend picking up his album, Hobo. last of all Bedouin took the stage at about 12:30 am. with the new drummer in the lineup they have a more organic sound. a really great sound. their show was great. i wont lie, however, their new album. being quite a bit different from their older stuff didnt mix that well with it, there was a lull in the songs when Jay played a solo song, and a few cuts off the new record. a nice change though, the did manage to play a song off of every albume, even root fire. that was awesome. even Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar came out on stage and played Money Worries with the band. the best songs were, When the Night feels my Song, and Nothing to Say. overall, a fantastic show. a guaranteed good time when bedouin rolls through town.

    great show

    by DrDave52 on 2010-11-27The Pyramid - Winnipeg

I thought all three acts were teriffic, and both Charlie Winston and Soundclash were great. Tight music and original sounds, great musicianship, especially Bedouin Soundclash's rythym section. The new drummer fit in just great. Charlie Winston was a pleasant surprise, I will look for them again. Only complaint was the venue. With mandatory coat-check and people lined up in the cold having one person slowing taking coats one at a time was just stupid. Missed opportunitty to sell more booze while we waited for half an hour to get in.

    not so great

    by Catherine9 on 2010-11-22Sound Academy - Toronto

The best part of the night was KO, which was followed by 2 BRUTAL acts (sorry for those who like CHarlie WInston) I had never heard of him, nor would I want to hear him again. The venue was horrid as the stench from the washrooms was wafting through the building. It was like being around 100 port-o-potty's. Absolutely brutal. Bedouin was so-so. Couldnt hear a single word sang though. Overall was very disappointed and I think the venue was most of the cause

    Timingwas not good

    by rahzel81 on 2010-11-22Sound Academy - Toronto

I thought the show was good. Bedouin did a great job as did KO. My suggestion would be to start later than 730. I am a big KO fan and barely made it for his set. I realize it's an all ages event but for the people who are of age and maybe have jobs it is next to impossible to get somewhere for 7. If the sshow had actually started at 8 that would have made the experience much better.
