Ben Harper, in a word, was outstanding! He played a mix of both loud rock n' roll along with the quiet soft and sensitive. The impromptu acoustic session taken by request was a nice surprise including a fabulous version of Sexual Healing. He engaged with the audience, was witty and entertaining and seemed to truly appreciate the crowd, including those in "cheap seats" on the other side of the fence. The venue at Malkin Bowl is excellent for acoustics and the view is great from anywhere. It was my first Ben Harper concert but it certainly won't be my last!!!
THis is the 4th time I have seen Ben Harper, and he never disappoints. My all time favourite concert was Ben Harper at the Molson Amp....he rocked it out for 2.5 hours during a brutal storm in Toronto. This most recent show at Sound Academy rivalled that show. Ben played a great mix of new vs old tunes, mellow vs. rock, and I could not believe that he went for over 3 hours! Sound Academy was a great venue,
There have always been two sides to the beautiful Ben Harper: the quiet and the intense. Must be a very complex guy. Tuesday was definitely intense ... more balance in the setlist would have made this an even more exceptional show (just my two cents). That said, Toronto absolutely adores Ben Harper.
He is a gorgeous guy with a gorgeous voice....I am lucky I got to see him in person as he has been one of my favourite musicians for the last decade. He definitely didn't disappoint in person and sang some of my old favourites mixed in with some funky new stuff and some great covers. There was a lot of love in the crowd for him! I hope he comes back to Toronto again soon!
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals blew me away, to quote a friend at the show, "If Robert Plant and Janis Joplin had a secret love child that was a vocal prodigy, Grace Potter could have been the result!" Seen Ben many times, he never disappoints!
This was the best show I have ever been to hands down!!! He is such an amazing musician and performer.
i would go see him in a public washroom, he's an incredible artist and human being, but i don't think i will go to another "concert" at this venue.
Although I am a huge fan of Ben Harper, the concert he put on at the Sound Academy failed to impress me. He played alot of slow songs and tonnes from the newest album. People want to hear the hits and original iconic tunes, not sappy new love songs. I love him. But the show was not worth going to and paying for.
