Good but not Great.
by Gilli-Wahoo Goodears. on 2023-07-17Rating: 3 out of 5Slightly disappointed in the sound presentation. These guys are a professional outfit so you expect professional sound. They played the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on a Wednesday night. The Opener was a guitar band from Ontario. Their sound was abysmal but I assured myself it would be fixed for Blackberry Smoke. Nope.
There were about 800 people total and I was about 30 ft. back from the stage, centerish, standing. It took 30 mins. to get to decent sound for BBS. You could barely make out any noticeable bass throughout the concert. The low end of the scale is so important, especially playing off howling guitars. That was a disappointment.
As for the second percussion guy up beside the drummer, he may as well have stayed home. He was supposed to be adding shakers and tambourines and other effects which is usually great but you couldn't hear a sound. Completely drowned out. I literally considered talking to the sound guy, set up behind me, but figured I'd get a polite "piss off mate". So in the end the seven peice band was really a 5 man band with a bit of bass thrown in here and there. I see a lot of live music and was excited to see these guys for the first time. I will see them again at some point, they are good, but the sound at the Music Hall wasn't great. I can only assume Blackberry Smoke has their own sound engineers. Too bad, it could have been great.
