BRIAN WILSON IN CONCERT:

Visionary musical genius Brian Wilson first rose to international acclaim in the early ‘60s as the mastermind behind The Beach Boys’ “California Sound”, and now he’s bringing his crowning achievement back to fans on his Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour. The seminal album won over fans around the world with its pioneering blend of orchestral arrangements, glistening harmonies, and coming-of-age lyrics, and it's widely regarded as one of the finest albums of the 20th century. Now, Wilson has invited top-notch musicians and some old friends to help him recreate each masterfully composed song note-for-note from start to finish—all while ticket buyers sing along to each unforgettable melody. With original Beach Boy Brian Wilson performing each beloved tune from the album with his signature good vibrations, this can’t-miss event is sure to stay with fans for a lifetime.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Inglewood, CA in 1942, Brian Wilson honed his musical chops in high school by deconstructing hits by The Four Freshman on the family piano and teaching the harmony parts to his brothers. After befriending Al Jardine in his college choir class, the two had the idea of forming a band. They teamed up with Brian’s brothers, Carl and Dennis, and his cousin, Mike Love, in 1961 and began performing as The Pendletones. After changing their name to The Beach Boys, the group rose to phenomenal success in the first half of the ‘60s with massive hits like “ Surfin’ Safari”, “I Get Around”, and “Help Me, Rhonda”. As their principal songwriter, Wilson had written or co-written over two dozen hits and gained complete control over the group’s studio production by his 21st birthday. His ground-breaking use of the recording studio as an instrument led to increasingly elaborate and experimental songs. Wilson's talent and creative ambition reached new heights with the release of 1966’s Pet Sounds, an enduring classic that many critics consider one of the best albums of all time. Sadly, Wilson suffered a nervous breakdown trying to top the album’s brilliance and spent much of the next two decades in deteriorating mental and physical health. He recaptured the public imagination in 1988, however, when he released his critically praised self-titled solo debut. As luck would have it, that same year The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and scored their first number 1 hit in 22 years with “Kokomo”. Since then, Brian has continued to pursue projects at his discretion—both with The Beach Boys and as a solo artist—including his warmly received 2015 album No Pier Pressure.

    Brian Wilson Presents Timeless Gems

by wilfredn on 2011-06-28Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I had seen Brian Wilson with his band before, so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. This time out, the focus was on Wilson's current album, "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin". The Gershwin songs as interpreted by Wilson were a true marriage of the well-known classics and the sound of the Beach Boys. Favorites, for me, were 'sWonderful which had a pleasant bossa feel, and a couple of tunes that had the infectious Beach Boy shuffle – They Can't Take That Away From Me and I Got Rhythm. After performing the entire album, the band took a twenty minute break. The opening set was satisfying and worth the price of admission in itself, but everyone seemed to know what we were in for in the second half. On the earlier occasion on which I saw Brian Wilson in concert, he and his band played a surprising selection of Beach Boy songs that ran from the familiar hits to some of the more obscure songs. What was really great about tonight's show was a set list including some deep album tracks such as Please Let Me Wonder (from the Beach Boys Today album), Salt Lake City, Girl Don't Tell Me and a few songs from Pet Sounds. Brian's vocals were good, and his stage patter was endearing and amusing. It didn't really matter that he scarcely played the piano in front of him . . . It was clear that everyone held him in high regard for the wonderful legacy of music that he has given us. His band was fantastic . . . a collection of mostly young singers and players who doubled on multiple instruments to capture the original sound of the Beach Boy recordings. The guitars, the rich and inventive vocal harmonies, the wood blocks and sleigh bells . . . they were all there. Truly remarkable. The concert lasted a good two and half hours, including a lengthy first encore and a second encore surprise of the immensely refreshing All Summer Long. Notable was the small string section from Edmonton: The Global Village Strings which added some really great touches to a number of the songs, including those vibrant cello triplets in Good Vibrations.

by donono on 2011-06-28Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This was one of the best concerts I have ever been to and I have been to a lot! The band was amazing, Jeff's falsetto impeccable, strings and horns awesome, just too great for words. The Gershwin set was so much fun, being a Gershwin fan I loved it. Congrats to Brian for proving that you don't have to get old, with music you are forever young!

Brian Wilson was in fine form. His singing was excellent. The musicianship of the band was superb. A 3 hour concert with a 20 minute intermission. I was blown away with the harmony demonstrated by the band members singing. It was an unforgettable concert. It was amazing.

    Brian Wilson reimagines Gershwin

by quinn1950 on 2011-06-28Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Brian seemed to have some kind of medical reason that his bodily movements were stilted--however, we can forgive this and any off-key or not-quite-there notes, and admire his musical genius and leadership. The second half was pure BeachBoys repertoire, and backed by an energetic and talented 8-pc band, who also sang--it was altogether FABULOUS!! And the sound level was NOT deafening--just right....

Brain gave an amazing and magical presentation!

by Poplover69 on 2011-06-28Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Brain Wilson's Pop Rock performance of the Gershwin classics in the 1st half was great but with the help of his 12 piece rock band his coverage of the Beach boys classics that he created was truly amazing and pure magic in the 2nd half of his show.

The first half of the concert was promotion of his compilations based on Gershwin. It was good. The 2nd half featured his hits. A great band with amazing harmony! "Wouldn't it be Nice" , Good Vibrations, and Heros and Villians were awesome. Keep Rockin!

Brian Wilson and his band was a pleasure to see. He still loves making music, and although he has his limitations, his band fills in all of the holes with ease.

    It was a fantastic concert.

by Anonymous on 2011-06-27Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

It was so wonderful to see the young band members - and great singers in their own right - that enjoyed what they do so much. Brian put together a wonderful, wonderful group of people to accompany him and they could have gone on all night is was such an incredible concert. I would go again in a heartbeat. Just a note - there was problems with the CTrain being out at Sunnyside and we needed to get info on how to get back to Sunnyside after the concert as teh shuttle bus driver was no help and the girls at the box office went above and beyond in getting us info that they gave us at the intermission. Thank you so much!

    Brian Wilson was great!

by Meenchie on 2011-06-27Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

We were totally blown away by his band. Brian Wilson was a phenomenal conductor, sang great songs and a bit of keyboard, but his band really ttok the show. Not only were they superb musicians, the wide range of instruments from glockenspiel to tambourine was fascinating to watch. They were tight, and provided us with much entertainment. thanks for the great show!!!!

Recommended for people who like actual music

by Rockeroller on 2011-06-27Jubilee auditorium - Edmonton

If you're gonna attend a Brian Wilson show, i'd assume you've heard the beachboys before, and know what to expect musicwise. Brian came out, coming across maybe a little shy, and a teeny tiny bit eccentric, but thats what makes him cool, and neat! He started off the first set playing Gershwin tunes for the first set, which may not have been some peoples cup of tea, but i looked at it from the vantage point " hey, some beachboys songs i've never heard before" His band consisted of a five piece string section, one dude who played wind instruments, a drummer, percussionist, bass player, three guitar playersand two other keyboard players, one of whom played xylophone. Brian sat in front of a keyboard, which he played occasionally in the second set. Everone sang fantastic harmonies. Only drummer and string section didnt sing. After intermission, the second set which was really long and a really long encore, was all perfectly fantastically done beachboys numbers. You can almost have an out of body experience listening to it. When you see this show you will understand Brian is a man who strives for musical excellence! His voice was great. It boggles my mind how anyone posted a bad review about this concert. Perhaps the one bad review on here was by someone who doesnt dig the beachboys?

On the whole, this show was spectacular. The only downside was that Brian Wilson himself was rather unspectacular. I don't know if it is due to his stroke but he is unable to play an instrument and sing at the same time. He basically sits for the whole show and sings (most) of the songs. That being said, he absolutely nailed "God Only Knows". His band really is the thing that makes this a must see. They make for a fun, upbeat and dancey good time. Their harmonies are like a feast for the ears and they are all very talented musicians. I found myself enjoying the Gershwin stuff more then the Beach Boys stuff, not that the Beach Boys stuff was bad, Gershwin was just more interesting.

    When is he coming again!!!

by nparker on 2011-06-25Pantages Playhouse Theatre - Winnipeg

We went thinking the Gershwin would be enjoyable and the beach boys stuff predictable but didn't want to miss seeing Brian Wilson in person. Yes, the Gershwin was enjoyable, and we learned their melodies are timeless as Brian Wilson's version sounded like he wrote them but still identifiable as Gershwin. The 2nd half, the Beach Boy half, exceeded our expectations. We've always have had good memories of Beach Boys, but both of us, around 50 yrs old, haven't listened to much at all in the last 20 years to be honest. Our memories of the studio recorded music versus what we heard, hardly compared! Rather than just happy pop songs, we heard ironic, witty, rock and roll. We sat 2nd row and saw the effort Brian Wilson put into this performance and saw his facial expressions, hitting good notes and when he didn't, and he spoke to the band and the audience. My wife said she didn't think she ever heard anyone say he has such a good sense of humor. She smiled and laughed along as we saw Brian Wilson express himself. It was obvious he was more comfortable joking and smiling with his band, but up sitting up close, it felt like we were in his house as his guests and we wouldn't have missed it for the world!
