  • Bruce's delayed 50th Anniversary Tour

by Steve of the North on 2023-02-07The Centre in Vancouver - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Delayed 3 years by Covid ,Bruce Cockburn is on his 50th Anniversary Tour. Although he has slowed down a little by health issues his solo act, 3 guitars by his side was solid. Bruce told stories, engaged in warm banter with an appreciative audience and in 2 sets played songs old and new. The acoustic version of Lovers in a Dangerous time and A Tree falls in the Forest were highlights for me. The audience joyfully sang along to "wonderin where the Lions are," the atmosphere felt like you were sitting with an old friend. There was a 2 song encore in response to a lengthy standing ovation for which Bruce was appreciative. It felt a bit like a goodbye tour, so see him while you can, the man is a Canadian legend.

  • He's still got it!

by Ray on 2023-02-07The Centre in Vancouver - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Just Bruce and his custom Manzer acoustic guitars. No backing required. He created a space filled with warmth, depth, and light humor which kept us engaged the whole time. Our seats gave us a good view of his brilliant guitar playing. He used a 12 string, a couple of 6 strings, chimes, and a dobro. He can still sing, unlike many artists his age. His poetry was as deep and meaningful as ever, and he presented material that touched on social, political, spiritual, environmental, and the human condition. He included a few songs from his upcoming album which will be released in a couple of months. Can't wait. The sets seemed short to me, but the sound was well engineered and the venue was comfortable.

  • Thankful for the continuation of the Tour

    by B. K. on 2023-02-07The Centre in Vancouver - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Bruce noted that this particular tour is one based on the pre-pandemic celebration of the 50 Anniversary of Bruce's 1st Album. The celebration was preempted because of the pandemic, however; on Saturday night it was a celebration of Bruce and his contribution to Canada's discophrophy. From the familiar to the new Bruce presented his unique understanding of music, social commentary and feeling. It was shouted out, " Bruce we love you!" By the audience and truly it was of love for Bruce.

  • Lots of mojo left!

by Dnr on 2023-02-07The Centre in Vancouver - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, for a 77 yr old he has a remarkably strong voice, and the dexterity from his 30'shas not left him. I still consider him the bard of my generation. Sometimes funny, always poetic and very often prophetic in reflecting some of the big misgivings of our culture. Thoughts of eternity never far away. Thanks for the journey and I sights Bruce. From a multidecade fan.

  • Amazing show

    by D. B. on 2023-02-07The Centre in Vancouver - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Bruce looked a little frail coming on stage, but as soon as he started playing and singing, you realize he's just as talented as he was 30 years ago. It was just him and a (one of three) guitar, but the sound was powerful. He did a great mix of old hits and introducing new songs, finishing with a new number, going against Show Bis Wisdom (an oxymoron, he said). Impressive for a 77 year old!

  • He was great, entertaining and funny.

by Simi on 2023-02-07The Centre in Vancouver - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

We really enjoyed his enthusiastic following, and the way he included and interacted with the audience. Not to mention what a voice at his age, so inspiring. Keep it up Bruce!

  • A Great Concert from a Great Canadian Artist

by Shuggy on 2022-04-28National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The only other times I had ever seen Bruce Cockburn “in concert” was when he played with The Children at Le Hibou, Ottawa’s iconic coffee house of the ‘60s and ‘70s. My friends and I would go to after hours when he and The Children played into the wee hours. Since then I listened to him mainly on True North vinyl and followed his career that way. He is, without doubt, one of the greatest guitar players in the world and he is to guitar playing as Ron Sexsmith is to song writing. Of course, Cockburn’s powerful lyrics and songs are not shabby either! In his Ottawa concert, where it all began so to speak, he did not disappoint as he took the audience on a trip through his past and very current song book. Together with excellent, thoughtful reflection and highly intelligent commentary he had his audience right with him all the way. Cockburn’s understanding of the issues of the past and present, his passionate expression of them and his own humility and grace with his own artistry all shone through. Ottawa gave Canada a jewell and it sparkled this past Saturday night. I certainly hope I will see Cockburn in concert again - but to have seen him this time will last me forever. A concert not to be missed!!

  • Bruce Cockburn 59th Anniversary take II

by Tomahawk on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome talent, great to see Bruce enjoying the twilight of his career. His vocals are still at 90+% and his guitar playing never waivers. Great storyteller with pretty much and into to each song he played.

  • Best 50th Birthday!

by L. M. on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Bruce Cockburn's music has been important to me for nearly 40 years. This was my first opportunity to see him live in concert. I flew from Vancouver to Ottawa just for this concert and it was totally worth it! He is a beautiful performer - gracious and humble. It was as though he was having a conversation with friends over the course of the evening. His stories and banter between songs were funny, poignant and interesting. He manages his physical limitations with grace. This evening he was in fine voice (better than I've heard in recent videos, etc) and everything he sang was delightful. The concert hall was lovely with beautiful acoustics. I had a second row seat and it was absolutely wonderful. I feel so blessed to have seen him live in concert. I hope he'll be up for a tour of the west coast when his next album comes out. If not, then I will cherish the memory of this concert. ❤️

  • Perfect Birthday

by L. M. on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Bruce Cockburn is a legend for a reason. His lyrics and music are moving and poignant. He is an amazing guitarist and a lovely singer. He is a humble and gracious performer. In his live performances he seems to be having a conversation with friends. His music has been really important to me for nearly 40 years and this was my first opportunity to see him live. He is obviously managing some physical limitations very well. He was in fine voice, better than I've heard (on recent videos, etc) in a while. The concert hall was lovely with amazing acoustics, and having a 2nd row seat made it even better. As far as I'm concerned seeing Bruce Cockburn live in concert will always be the highlight of my 50th year!

  • Bruce was great.

by Johnnycanuck on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

I had great seats, only seven rows from the stage and Bruce made me feel like I was in a coffee house with a small audience. Even though he is not a kid anymore his voice is still strong and evocative. I know nothing about guitar playing but I was dazzled anyway. The repertoire consisted of new songs and old favourites, a nice mix. My only disappointment is that he didn’t sing a song about a Ukrainian Rocket Launcher.

  • Masterpiece

by Grasshopper on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Jaw dropping performance by a guitar master who still has pipes in his midseventies. Drawing from 50 years of material, the highlight for me was when he reached back to the early records to play Sunwheel Dance and Barrelhouse Blues.

  • A Magician on the Guitar

by David on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Bruce Cockburn did not disappoint. Over 2 hours of amazing guitar playing, a voice that doesn't seem to age and easy-going audience engagement. Bruce is a national treasure.

  • Did not attend do to NAC dropping vaccine requirement

by J. H. on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 1 out of 5

We bought our tickets for Bruce Cockburn when the NAC required attendees to be vaccinated against the Covid virus. On the day of the event, we realized that this requirement had been dropped and that the only necessity was to wear a mask at the concert. This is very difficult to enforce once the concert starts, the lighting is dimmed and there are a great many people cheering, standing to dance or clap and generally very excited. My husband, although well, is medically compromised and we were very disappointed that the NAC was not willing to protect the more vulnerable in order to appease political ambitions and those who refuse to consider the common good.

  • Wonderful show

Bruce is still bringing it and I couldn’t be happier!

  • Good show

by Dave on 2022-04-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

It was a good show, I wouldn’t go as far as saying it was excellent as he left out quite a few of his hits which I thought was strange for a “fiftieth anniversary” show. Artists that have been around for so long deserve to celebrate their careers with fans, however I also think these celebrations should include the material which got them this far in their career.
