  • Bruce Cockburn was amazing live!

by twoaprilfools on 2011-03-26Kelowna Community Theatre - KelownaRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I enjoyed every minute of the concert. Bruce is one of the all time best guitar players in Canada.. if not the world! He sounded great live! I loved his interaction with the audience. I am very happy I was finally able to go to one of his concerts. I have been a fan since the beginning. We listen to his music on road trips all over BC all the time. Love his instrumental pieces and also the story telling lyrics in so many of his songs. Thanks for a great night Bruce!

The man never ceases to put heart and soul into his performances and it really shows.

  • Wonderful evening - Real Value

by CanadianEnvironmentalist on 2010-06-20Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

The concert was wonderful. Enjoyed Bruce & the special guests - especially the Wailing Jennies, the Barenaked Ladies & Hawsksley Workman - but everyone had something special to offer. Gian Ghomeshi was a great MC. Everyone just looked like they were having so much fun. It was enjoyable to be part of it. And they went on an extra hour (and no one - performers or audience - wanted to leave. The only negative were the lumpy seats of Massey Hall. Last year, we sat in the hard wooden seats and I looked down longingly at the upholstered seats. Found out this year, they weren't much better.

If I had been able to hear the voices of the vocalists it might have been enjoyable, but the accoustical guitars overshadowed any chance of appreciating the singing. Sylvia, Amelia, Wailin' Jennys were drowned out and the volume of the guitars was horrendous. One could only hope to lip read. I was going to leave at intermission, but stayed, as things improved with Hawksley Workman, who was fantastic and a couple of nice ones from Bruce.

  • COCKBURN WAS ONLY OK

When an artist starts 20 minutes late with no explanation I'm already angry...we were there on time what's his problem?...then he played and is a very good guitar player although I'm not that crazy about the screaming as singing in places...then he takes a half hour break which I think is excessive...the part of the show after the break was better although I'm not sure the wind chimes play a role important enough to have 4 of them on the stage...he finally did sing two songs the audience was familiar with at the very end and did 3 encores which was nice...I expected to be blown away because I've been a fan since the 70s and Rumors of Glory days...but I never heard a familiar song until the end...well...you asked...ciao

  • Bruce plays the guitar like nobody else.

The theatre was sold out and the audience response was exuberant and responsive! When he played his old tunes it had the great old time feeling of his 70s concerts.

  • Intimate Night with Bruce!

What a wonderful night with Bruce he is an amazing guitar player and challenges every sense in your body. His lyrics are thought provoking and he spins stories that cause you to experience the smells and feelings of the lyrics. What a night!

Bruce was fantastic. I have seen him many times and he never disappoints. We called him back for 3 encores. It was really nice seeing him in such a small venue. It is the first time since the 70's I have seen him by himself with no band. His new live cd features him by himself. I highly recommend Bruce Cockburn to people who like singer/songwriters.

  • Bruce always gives a great show!

This was the second time my boyfriend and I have gone to a Bruce Cockburn concert - we came from out of town for this show as we didn't want to miss the opportunity. The Studio at Hamilton Place is a great venue as it is large enough for the sound but also small enough that you feel intimate with the artist. Bruce sang a variey of old and new material to satisfy all fans. One in particular I liked was the song that was inspired by his participation at a ramp ceremony in Kandahar. He was also very generous with his encores.

  • At his BEST!

Bruce was truly at his best on Friday. Lots of standing ovations. Incredible guitar work. "Stolen Land" highlighted why I have always considered Bruce to be one of the worlds best guitarists. Nobody "sings with his guitar" like Bruce Coburn.

  • Bruce was amazing!!

20 hours later and I am still mulling the spectacular performance by Bruce over in my mind. I think the audience was enamored with Bruce and his music as much as I was, since we called him back 4 times after his finale. Sitting 20 ft from the stage gave me the intimate experience of his relaxed demeanor and incredible guitar playing, and I easily imagined, if I closed my eyes, he was playing some tunes for friends, in my living room. It was a warm performance and as usual Bruce was witty and funny, while he shared bits of information about his songs, and his experiences, that led to him writing the songs he played for us. Thanks for sharing your gifts.

  • excellent show

by JoeDylan on 2009-11-14The Studio at Hamilton Place - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

Bruce played a solid mix of new, old and "middle aged" songs. His trademark fingerstyle playing was on display, and his husky tenor was in fine form. What was really a delight, though, was his sense of humour and engagement with the audience in this wonderful little venue. A great show.

  • Amazing show.

by eiei on 2009-11-14The Studio at Hamilton Place - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

I was familiar with his work and talent and he showed excellence in both. Great to hear some new works as well as the known ones. He played for 4 1/2 hours, I lost count of the encores. Thanks Bruce.

  • Bruce Cockburn was fantastic

by ancasteraudience on 2009-11-14The Studio at Hamilton Place - HamiltonRating: 5 out of 5

Bruce Cockburn (solo) was in fine form; not surprisingly, his old standards held up very well; it was great to hear his new work, too, particularly the one he wrote after seeing a ramp ceremony in Afghanistan; very moving; overall, a fine and engaging show; his voice was strong (other than a few ill-advised ventures into a very high register) and I don't know how, but his guitar playing seemed to have improved! He was quite realxed and warm, and seemd to be enjoying himself up there. Personal preference - I much prefer to see him perform solo, rather than with a band, so I was in heaven. Only negative thing (and not within Bruce's control) - The Studio at Hamilton place needs to rethink this general admission policy - it can't be that difficult to assign numbers to rows and seats, afterall.
