On a beautiful Long Weekend in the Canadian bordertown of Windsor the Holigans in Wonderland tour arrived. Billed as a co-headlining show between Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars, it would be a tale of two very different performances. First up was Janelle, and judging from the crowd gathered there weren't very many there to see her. But if they didn't know who she was before they came, they defenitly knew who she was by the time she lef tthe stage. Her performance was nothing short of phenominal, the energy, enthusiasm and pure artisitic guile exuded from the moment the first beat dropped. Janelle launched into the first three songs on her second release The ArchAndroid and was at least 15 minutes into the show before she took a break to catch her breath. THere was Hip Hop, there was Rock, there was Opera, there was Pop, even a little painitng in between. Janelle blew the roof off with her final song "Come Alive" War of the Roses, dancing through the crowd, getting the crowd to Lalala along, dropping to the floor and then bringing it back up. I was left breathless and knew Bruno had a hard act to follow. The excitment built for Bruno, as the crowd of tweens and teens were there to see the man. Having been in the music business for so long and with a long string of songwriting credits there was much to be excited about. THe curtain opened, the intro was intense and Bruno Launced into the Other Side, minus Ce-Lo green. The Tweens and Teens went nuts. Bruno played to their emotions, and turned the Auditiorium into a New Kids on the Block homage. Playing for the ladies, singing to the ladies and complementing the ladies in the audience. A complete let down to what had ensued earlier. Don't get me wrong Bruno sounded and looked great, but he spread on the cheese factor pretty thick. It was nice to see him mix up some of his songs, and his ear for some bad sounding rhythms when his band kicked in on Count on Me showed his attention to detail is not lacking. I was just hoping for a little less cheese and bit more of a performance. In summary if you want to be entertained no matter what age you are go see Janelle, if you want to be entertained and are female between the ages of 12-17 then go see Bruno.
