Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

    The Flames kicked butt!

by Tulran on 2009-10-22Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

We had tickets in the nose bleed section of the Arena, but it was still worth it to watch the Flames beat Columbus 6-3. You could not see the main Scoreboard, but large TVs above our heads gave us some of the highlights. I will definitely do this again.

by PKBatman on 2009-10-21Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Enjoyed the game. The seats were quite high up in the stadium, but actually gave a good overall view of the Ice. Really appreciated the ability to print offf the tickets at home, simple and no fuss.

    Flames still burning hot

by Skookum on 2009-10-21Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I am from the Yukon and from 1980 still a hard core Calgary fan. Seen many players come and go. but no matter what Calgary Flames still keeps its flames stoked with great players. Hard work and great passing, making it a game for the 10 of us to remember. Thanks Calgary.

    Canucks wilt in Flames

    by Nate2009 on 2009-10-18Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

The event was awesome. The Flames are an amazing team. I was amazed at how much better of a team they are then the Canucks. Luongo is a joke...a 12 year joke at that. And fortunately its a joke that us Calgarians can laugh at with glee. Go Flame Go!

    Good game

    by albundy73 on 2009-10-17Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I had a great view of all of the action during the Canucks/Flames game. Got to see the game at a different speed sitting in the upper bowl. The game was much easier to follow sitting in the upper bowl as compared to the lower bowl where the action is quite fast.

    McGrattan's Gordie Howe hattrick

by LordStanleyscoming on 2009-10-17Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Great energy. The Flames played hard all game. Responsible yet aggressive defensive play by Calgary was fun to watch them dominate the Canucks. Took my buddy to his first NHL game. Got some autographs after. Hard to top last night!

    Hockey Rules!

by MystikRain on 2009-10-09Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Well, being that I am a Habs fan, the Flames winning was not the highlight of my night. Since it was my first ever NHL game, I was in awe at the sight of the ice and players I usually only see on TV. It was awesome, and I tell every hockey fan out there that hasn't been to a game, to try darn hard to get to one. I will never forget it.

    Flamed Broiled Fish!

by Firejackel on 2009-10-08Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

This was an excellent home opener for the Flames. I catch about 10 games a season and always try to make them division games. It was real nice to see Vancouver get beat even though Calgary did have a few moments of error... Also good to see the 3rd and 4th lines real work hard out there and were huge contributers to the win!

    Good game; passionate Habs fans

    by jojado83 on 2009-10-07Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Aside from maybe a concert featuring Metallica or Great Big Sea, this must have been the biggest gathering of Easterners in Calgary. For Flames fans it was another day at the office, but this was definitely a "one time only"-type gig for the Habs fans. They let it all hang out . Most of their fans were respectful but others were a little DRUNK and TIPSY. Oh yeah, and the game was good. Go Flames Go.

    Habs/Flames

by tnerb on 2009-10-07Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Got to the arena someone else was in my seats, had to explain to them they were in the wrong seats. Overall game was pretty good, will send the extra money next time to get seats closer to ice level. was in section 315, which was pretty high up. I think it was almost 60/40 Flames fans which was pretty awesome.

    Calgary Flames Pre-Season

by ircanuck on 2009-09-28Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Well, a tall cowboy in a large hat sat in front of me, blocking my view of the opposition zone for the entire game. Otherwise it was good. I'll be honest, for the $100 per seat (pre-season) it probably wasn't worth it.

    Flames were great!

by BellaBella on 2009-09-28Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Flames were awesome, Kipper stood tall. Luongo just had our number. Exciting to go to a shootout.
