Calgary Flames History

The Flames originated in Atlanta, Georgia in 1972. After eight years, they relocated to Calgary in 1980, where they were greeted by a far more hockey-friendly fanbase. Thus began the Battle of Alberta, which refers to the ongoing rivalry between the Flames and the Edmonton Oilers to the north.

The Flames were vanguards in terms of bringing in foreign players, as Håkan Loob became one of the league's first European stars. Loob, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, and Al MacInnis were the stars behind the Flames' only Stanley Cup Championship in 1989, gaining a measure of payback against the Montreal Canadiens in six games. Montreal had defeated the Flames in the Stanley Cup Final three years earlier.

Despite a block on players from the USSR, the Flames had the foresight to draft Russian star Sergei Makarov in 1983. Makarov was among the first Russians to play in the NHL when he joined the Flames in 1989-1990.

Despite financial issues, the diminutive Theo Fleury and Jarome Iginla led the Flames throughout the '90s, bouncing in and out of the postseason with little long-term success until 2004, when the Flames made another run at the Cup, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. The Flames have made it to the Playoffs 25 times and have two Presidents' Trophies to their credit, along with seven division championships.

Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome

Home to the Calgary Flames, the idea for the Scotiabank Saddledome was seeded when it became clear that two major events would be in need of a world-class arena — the bid for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games and the arrival of an NHL franchise. The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 1983. The arena became a star attraction during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, hosting both the figure skating and hockey competitions. In the fall of 1994, the arena underwent renovations and one year later the new Scotiabank Saddledome was unveiled. The Calgary Flames celebrated their first season at the arena during their home opener for the 1995-1996 season. The arena can seat more than 19,000 guests and hosts 150 events per year.

Flames vs Canucks game was CRAZY.

by Rocko on 2009-09-27Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

The game we went to last night with the Calgary Flames vs Vancouver Canucks was great. From start to finish it was exciting and even though it was pre-season, it had a regular season rivalry feel to it. It went right to over-time and then to a shoot-out. Couldn't have asked for more. Thanks Ticketmaster!

Flames v. Canucks - always a good game!

by lwright on 2009-09-27Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

i always love going to watch the Calgary Flames play the Vancouver Canucks. The games are always interesting and fiercly competitive; this one was no exception! Within 5 seconds of the puck dropping in the first period, we had our first fight! Shortly thereafter, the penalty boxes were both looking crowded - with two Flames and three Canucks in the box. I thought the game was played very well for a preseason game. The real stars of the game on both sides were definitely the goalies. Kiprusoff was on his game last night; which is always great to see. He was quick on the glove side throughout the whole game; making some amazing saves. And Luongo showed why he is one of Canada's top 2 goalies. My feelings about the Canucks aside, he will be an asset to team Canada come February.

    Great Pre-Season Game

by Jome on 2009-09-21Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

My husband and I went to celebrate our anniversary with dinner and a game and we had a wonderful time. It was great seeing the Flames back on the ice with a certain energy that seems to have arrived early this year. The first period saw them feeling around a bit but they came out in the second and it was as if they had found whatever connection they had been missing. Always a great time had. The Flames are our team and we love you guys!!!!

    Flames vs. Oilers

    by ShadyC222 on 2009-09-18Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I look forward to the regular season....prospects looked good against Oilers 1st stringers....although Oilers aren't that much of a measuring stick... Too bad they didn't play Fleury as that would have been entertaining to say the very least..

Flames Islanders Fleury debut was fantastic

    by BGDaddy911 on 2009-09-18Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

This was the best pre-season game that I have ever seen. You would have thought it was a playoff game. The crowd went wild when "Theo" hit the ice. It was a great game, tonnes of excitement, then overtime and then the shootout win for the Flames.

    Game Time

by smorgan on 2009-09-18Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

It was a good Game except for the person sitting to the right of me would continue bumping into me and bumping me with his elbow and would try and take up more then his share of space not impressed with this. One of the main reasons I do not attend many events is because people do not understand or respect personal space when they have had a few to drink.

    Go Fleury

by HerbiesDad on 2009-09-18Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

One of the best games you could ever go to, lots of fights, the goalies left there crease and got into it and a shoot out win that was scored from an old relic from the past. The rest of his game was old as welll but it was a wonderfull goal. Go FLAMES !!

    Flames get giant spark

by bigbward on 2009-09-18Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I drove 2 hours hoping to see Fleury play a preseason non event. What I saw was determination, desire, heart and really excellent hockey. The crowd was up and cheering every time Theo got on the ice. Even when he stepped on the ice for practice. The game itself was suspenseful. First we score and then the Islanders score three unanswered and then we get back into the game with two and tie it up and then the Islanders score to lead and then we tie it up and between all of this we have 5 or 6 fights. Two or three were really good ones. The whole team was involved. And to cap the hitting, Dion gets an Islander with his head down in the centre ice area and whammo, they take him away in a stretcher. So there are seconds left in the game and we score, only to find it was too late. One second after the bell. then the dreaded overtime and that was a show of unbelievable goal saving by Poulin. Then the dreaded shootout. Are we to be denied the final pleasure. Our favored son who has arisen in his later years after facing adversity in his life which is well categorized. Rises to the occasion and slips one in past the daunting goalie to win the day. The crowd was nuts. They rose to their feet to see this little hero spark the beginning of a new season with renewed hope. WHAT A GAME.

    vets vs. noobs

by UnStAbLeGrL on 2009-09-17Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Love going to hockey games, but this one kinda chewed. Had nosebleed seats and the monitors weren't on, so we missed any on-screen entertainment because we couldn't see the jumbotron from our seats. Edmontons team was stacked with vets, while our team was all the noobies...Not a very good match up of talent. Wouldn't have taken our friends from england to that game if we had known how unbalanced the match up was. Should have waited for Thursdays game and spent the cash on a good game when we're apparently gonna put out some of our more experienced players.

Rookies put on a great show

by BurningOil on 2009-09-16Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

Despite the dissapointing score at the end, the game was still a fully impressive effort by a team of young prospects. Against their provincial rivals starting squad. There was alot of spunk in the the lads as they fought for their dream careers. on a side note Ales Hemsky skated like Ooter off the simpsons full of chocolate. All that extra money really weighed him down. All rivalry aside It was a great show and the battle of alberta begins.

    Missing Fleury

by FleuryFan on 2009-09-16Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I thought that the game was entertaining, but a little one sided, Edmonton played their veterans and we did not. Also most of us bought tickets hoping to welcome Theo Fleury back to the NHL with a standing Ovation. He was not played, for reasons we can all respect, but still it was a disappointing night!

    Flames/Oilers Pre-season

    by Fan99 on 2009-09-16Pengrowth Saddledome - Calgary

I try to see all of the Battle of Alberta games and am never disappointed. It is one of the best competitions to watch and the crowd really gets into the games despite that it is just a pre-season.
