Calgary Stampeders History

The Calgary Stampeders are the fifth oldest active franchise in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Founded in 1945, success came early for the Stampeders, who completed the CFL’s only perfect 12-0 regular season and secured their first Grey Cup in 1948. Overall, the Calgary Stampeders have appeared in 17 Grey Cup finals and won eight, in 1948, 1971, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018. Notably, the Stamps’ championship victories in 2001 and 2008 also stand as the two highest-attended CFL championship games of the 21st century. Throughout the team’s history, Calgary Stampeders players have claimed 11 Most Outstanding Player Awards, nine Most Outstanding Canadian Awards, six Most Outstanding Rookie Awards, four Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards and eight Annis Stukus Trophies for the CFL’s top head coach. The Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks are included in the multi-league sports rivalry between the two cities, dubbed the Battle of Alberta.

Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium

McMahon Stadium has been the home of the Stampeders since it opened in 1960. The stadium is owned by the University of Calgary and named after two Calgary residents and brothers, Frank McMahon and George McMahon, who helped fund the facility’s construction. McMahon Stadium was the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies and has hosted five Grey Cup finals between 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. The 35,400-seat venue has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in 1988, 2001 and 2005. During home games, fans can catch sight of Ralph the Dog, the first mascot of any CFL team, or celebrate a touchdown with the release of a white gelding known as the "Quick Six" horse, who charges along the east sideline.

    Ticketing good, food bad

by Allan on 2023-09-07McMahon Stadium - Calgary

We were a group of 12. We were not able to buy some seats that we wanted due to restrictions which would not allow us to buy one of a pair of seats. Ticket management in the Ticketmaster app worked very well; we were able to easily transfer tickets to various members of the group. McMahon Stadium food choices are very poor compared to other CFL stadiums, and queues are long, with the result that one misses part of the game. The concourse decor is bare concrete and has not changed since the stadium was built in 1960. Our seats did not have backs but we brought in portable stadium seats which had backs.

Did not attend due to air quality

by KAM on 2023-09-07McMahon Stadium - Calgary

We did not attend due to the air quality rating. There were small pieces of ash falling from the sky. I am very disappointed that this game was proceeded; it seems that the focus was not on the health of those attending.

    What a show

    by Jimmy Bones on 2023-07-26

Stamps lost this game in OT but they fought hard. Best pre game show. Tickets from Ticketmaster price was reasonable this time.

Great game, but stadium lacking amenities

by ScouterBigMac on 2023-06-29McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Great game, good weather and fan atmosphere. It was Calgary's game to lose... which they did. Stadium has NO place to eat food once purchased. No stand up tables or counters. Had to take it to our seats and sloppily eat it there. Also NO watering fountains or stations to refill drink cups or bottles. No Video screens to view the game from the concourse. I guess we are spoiled @ BC Place.

    Riders Win in OT

by KJ on 2023-06-28McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Very fun experience as about half the crowd were repping our Rider green. The game was back and forth which made for an entertaining evening for myself and my group of 10 family members and friends. Calgary desperately needs to do something about outdated McMahon. Replacing the metal bleachers with real seats would be a good start, especially when the temperature drops.

Game became good in 3rd quarter yay Roughriders!!

by Fiona on 2023-06-27McMahon Stadium - Calgary

How on earth is McMahon not accessible ? I thought I had tickets in the section below which was enough of a climb. But I had to practically crawl to my seat because there was no railing!!!

Cow bell ruins the game ☹️

by RDH Chicky on 2023-06-27McMahon Stadium - Calgary

My ticket master experience was easy and efficient. Our seats were perfect. A fan with a cowbell who shook it incessantly throughout the game even when there was nothing happening during the game ruined it for us. I wish the cow bells and horns would be banned for all cfl games. I believe the players cannot hear them anyway and it only ruins the game for fans.

    Game was awesome.

by Rockabillysteam on 2023-06-14McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The Stamps played one helluva game. Even though they lost, it was a lot of fun to watch. This was my kids first game. We bought tickets in the family section because that's what we could afford. Unfortunately, we had a preteen blowing a loud "trumpet" repeatedly in my sound sensitive teens ear. There were also a group of fans playing really loud music on their phone which was not the same as what was being played on the loudspeakers. The food was cold and premade, and when you have a limited budget it is very disappointing to have to waste the food because it is so bad. There was no attention given to the family section of fans in the manner of merch/prizes...which is where focus should be a priority. My daughter wanted the opportunity to "win" something but that opportunity never arose. Very grateful for the chance to go to a game, would love to attend more but not being allowed to bring drinks or food in makes it difficult.

    by Apollo1234 on 2023-06-11McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Hot out baby. 30c no clous or wind. I sat on the east side. Stamps qb couldnt throw long. Receivers cold catch even when they could touch the ball. Great show was put on. Fireworks, cheerleaders, loud music. Great entertainment

    Amazing

by CurtisPetrick on 2022-11-01McMahon Stadium - Calgary

I’ve been fighting depression and needed to get out. As a huge football and use to go all the time. I needed this. As soon as I sat down and looked around there was a smile on my face. And has been since. Can’t wait to get back

    Stamps vs Argos

by AJ on 2022-10-04McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The music volume and selection between plays is way over the top, to the point of being very annoying ! Please tone down a few decibels to help provide a more enjoyable experience.

    Tilted field

by Me on 2022-09-20McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The O/T should have alternated between the north and south ends of the field. Explain it to the players at the time of the coin toss. As it was, we on the south end saw VERY LITTLE action throughout the rest of the game, but that's just our bad luck of the seats we bought. Still had fun with my son and his gf.
