Calgary Stampeders History

The Calgary Stampeders are the fifth oldest active franchise in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Founded in 1945, success came early for the Stampeders, who completed the CFL’s only perfect 12-0 regular season and secured their first Grey Cup in 1948. Overall, the Calgary Stampeders have appeared in 17 Grey Cup finals and won eight, in 1948, 1971, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018. Notably, the Stamps’ championship victories in 2001 and 2008 also stand as the two highest-attended CFL championship games of the 21st century. Throughout the team’s history, Calgary Stampeders players have claimed 11 Most Outstanding Player Awards, nine Most Outstanding Canadian Awards, six Most Outstanding Rookie Awards, four Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards and eight Annis Stukus Trophies for the CFL’s top head coach. The Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks are included in the multi-league sports rivalry between the two cities, dubbed the Battle of Alberta.

Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium

McMahon Stadium has been the home of the Stampeders since it opened in 1960. The stadium is owned by the University of Calgary and named after two Calgary residents and brothers, Frank McMahon and George McMahon, who helped fund the facility’s construction. McMahon Stadium was the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies and has hosted five Grey Cup finals between 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. The 35,400-seat venue has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in 1988, 2001 and 2005. During home games, fans can catch sight of Ralph the Dog, the first mascot of any CFL team, or celebrate a touchdown with the release of a white gelding known as the "Quick Six" horse, who charges along the east sideline.

Loved the experience. Pro football. Fantastic half time show. Great cheerleaders. Great athletes. Recognition of the Armed Forces. Jets through the stadium. Party atmosphere. We loved every minute and went home smiling.

by Deker on 2022-09-08McMahon Stadium - Calgary

    1. Did not see a secure place for bringing a bike. 2 South side open gate to big sports field north west of stadium caused a lot of extra steps leaving game. Otherwise okay

    Wow!

by Caitlyn on 2022-09-08McMahon Stadium - Calgary

First ever Stamps game and all I can say is WOW. They had fireworks, jets, horses, cheerleaders… just everything! Makes you forget it’s CFL the way they put on such a show for the fans. The food was good, the beer was cold. Definitely a fun time. Beautiful day and Labour Day at that! Bathrooms were clean, seats were good.

    Best game of the season

by Donald on 2022-08-16McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Excellent game, a real thriller especially at the end when the BC Lions came vack to edge the Stamos 41-40. Great to see Canadian qb Nathan Rourke. Tickets were easy to buy online and gain entry to the historic NcMahon Stadium. 👍👍

Stampeders vs Winnipeg - July 30

by Marcel on 2022-08-02McMahon Stadium - Calgary

What has happened to the sound system one could not hear officials announce infractions (from row 5 seats), the field overhead camera, another budget cut by the Flames?

    Exhilarating!

by TJ on 2022-06-29McMahon Stadium - Calgary

So so much fun for my friends and family that went to the game. Only complaint is that the mini footballs need to have the catapults and cannons back so they reach the back stands. It’s the kids that love them and families tend to sit in cheaper seats. Also I miss Ralph getting the fans cheering with his old picket fences

    Wet’n chilly

by AB on 2021-10-26McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Was wet. Rained all day prior to game… seats were wet… should have “rainy day” specials as alcohol was pricey.

Lots of security and no line ups but we were early. Very few masks in the concourse.

    Great Football Game

by Hal on 2021-10-05McMahon Stadium - Calgary

CSE finally got entrance requirements figured out with experienced people. Covid-19 documentation was ahead of the ticket scanners. It was much smoother than previous games. In the past they had kids trying to scan phone tickets. Lineups to get in were 15 minutes or longer. We missed the Labour Day flyover waiting in line. Horse and ponies were a neat addition for family day. And they had some touchdowns to ride after.

    Entertaining Afternoon

by Steve on 2021-10-05McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The weather was excellent during the game, the fan atmosphere was great for both teams. The only downers was my team lost (not using that against the score), and that McMahon Stadium is a pretty outdated location. The positives outweigh the negatives by a wide margin at the end of the day.

    Amazing Game

by Stamps Out-Of-Towner on 2021-10-05McMahon Stadium - Calgary

I went with a friend who is a Saskatchewan fan. The game came down to a final play with seconds to go, keeping us both entertained until the end. Saskatchewan recovered their own kick 3 plays in a row, which has to be some kind of record. Fortunately, the Stamps won, giving me bragging rights. I love the McMahon Stadium area, motel village is handy for games and there are a few interesting restaurants within walking distance, including the iconic Nicks Pizza.
