Calgary Stampeders History

The Calgary Stampeders are the fifth oldest active franchise in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Founded in 1945, success came early for the Stampeders, who completed the CFL’s only perfect 12-0 regular season and secured their first Grey Cup in 1948. Overall, the Calgary Stampeders have appeared in 17 Grey Cup finals and won eight, in 1948, 1971, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018. Notably, the Stamps’ championship victories in 2001 and 2008 also stand as the two highest-attended CFL championship games of the 21st century. Throughout the team’s history, Calgary Stampeders players have claimed 11 Most Outstanding Player Awards, nine Most Outstanding Canadian Awards, six Most Outstanding Rookie Awards, four Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards and eight Annis Stukus Trophies for the CFL’s top head coach. The Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks are included in the multi-league sports rivalry between the two cities, dubbed the Battle of Alberta.

Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium

McMahon Stadium has been the home of the Stampeders since it opened in 1960. The stadium is owned by the University of Calgary and named after two Calgary residents and brothers, Frank McMahon and George McMahon, who helped fund the facility’s construction. McMahon Stadium was the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies and has hosted five Grey Cup finals between 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. The 35,400-seat venue has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in 1988, 2001 and 2005. During home games, fans can catch sight of Ralph the Dog, the first mascot of any CFL team, or celebrate a touchdown with the release of a white gelding known as the "Quick Six" horse, who charges along the east sideline.

Excellent! No issues with buying the tickets and getting the tickets on-line. The weather was beautiful, the fans were fun, the beer was cold and the seats were perfect. It's the CFL - exciting! Down to the last seconds!

What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon

by Regg on 2009-10-18McMahon Stadium - Calgary

It was a beautiful day at McMahon Stadium. The only thing that could have made it better was if the Riders had won.

Game was excellent. Score went back and foward. Overtime was awesome. Too many Sask fans. Surprised it wasn't a sell out.

    Amazing game!

by Riderville on 2009-10-18McMahon Stadium - Calgary

One of the most exciting games I have ever seen. Back and forth, loads of suspense. The only fly in the ointment was the ref from the Subway commercial calling the game.

    Stamps Rock

    by brianne9 on 2009-10-04McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The football game was awesome. It was a cold day in Calgary but the fans were still pumped up. The stamps didn't score any touchdowns and the game was very close. The stamps ended up winning 15-14.

    The Stamps game was amazing.

by haylz on 2009-09-26McMahon Stadium - Calgary

It was an excellent game. Our seats weren't the greatest but I guess it was a good view. I enjoy watching games live rather than at home on TV because of the awesome atmosphere.

    Give it to the refrees

    by LionFan4 on 2009-09-26McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Well never seen such bad refreeing. It was not the Lions against the Stampeders they were also against the refrees. Stamp fans should thank the refrees for that win. Two extremely bad calls back to back gave the win to the Stamps. Score Stamps/Refrees 28 BC Lions

Edmonton got their asses handed to them...

by ChiPa on 2009-09-16McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Our seats weren't the best, it was cold and windy, and we were cheering for the green and gold in a sea of red... BUT it was still a good time. It would have been nice if the game was a bit closer, more exciting! but you can't beat seeing the battle of Alberta, live!

    End Zone Seats are GARBAGE!

by TheTruthSucks on 2009-09-08McMahon Stadium - Calgary

I sat in the temporary seats constructed for the Grey Cup in Calgary - WOW are these TERRIBLE! Freezing cold and windswept, these benches are too small to fit anyone and the view of the game is horrendous. They shouldn't cost half as much as seats in the main grandstands, they should cost no more than $5 per seat. If you have any interest in the game, stay home and watch on TV rather than pay money for this. You will spend the entire time uncomfortable, cold and annoyed. This was a terrible event of the first order.

    Stamps vs Esks

by cowgal on 2009-09-08McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The game was great. Calgary started out slow but soon was scoring. My seats were perfect. Football is way more fun at a game than on TV.

Esks Stunk, Bad Game, Bad Seats

by heathklein on 2009-09-08McMahon Stadium - Calgary

We sat in the back of the end zone and could not see anything past the 35 yard line of the close end, the seats were cold, and the Esks laid an egg.
