Calgary Stampeders History

The Calgary Stampeders are the fifth oldest active franchise in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Founded in 1945, success came early for the Stampeders, who completed the CFL’s only perfect 12-0 regular season and secured their first Grey Cup in 1948. Overall, the Calgary Stampeders have appeared in 17 Grey Cup finals and won eight, in 1948, 1971, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018. Notably, the Stamps’ championship victories in 2001 and 2008 also stand as the two highest-attended CFL championship games of the 21st century. Throughout the team’s history, Calgary Stampeders players have claimed 11 Most Outstanding Player Awards, nine Most Outstanding Canadian Awards, six Most Outstanding Rookie Awards, four Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards and eight Annis Stukus Trophies for the CFL’s top head coach. The Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks are included in the multi-league sports rivalry between the two cities, dubbed the Battle of Alberta.

Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium

McMahon Stadium has been the home of the Stampeders since it opened in 1960. The stadium is owned by the University of Calgary and named after two Calgary residents and brothers, Frank McMahon and George McMahon, who helped fund the facility’s construction. McMahon Stadium was the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies and has hosted five Grey Cup finals between 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. The 35,400-seat venue has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in 1988, 2001 and 2005. During home games, fans can catch sight of Ralph the Dog, the first mascot of any CFL team, or celebrate a touchdown with the release of a white gelding known as the "Quick Six" horse, who charges along the east sideline.

Stamps vs. Bombers game was awesome

    by Jinx3 on 2009-08-15McMahon Stadium - Calgary

I took my 2 boys to their first Stamps game and they loved it. They got their face painted with a stampederes horse on their cheek and the best part was taking their picture with the Grey Cup. They were cheering so loud they had half our section cheering right along with them. They were high fiving all the people in front of us and behind on all the great plays. This was a game they'll never forget because half of our family is Winnipeg fans and we kicked butt this game.

    Stampeders vs Blue Bombers

by Bluefish on 2009-08-09McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Great - we scored first! Would have liked seats closer to the game but great weather and a winning game so who can complain?

    Our Blood Runs Green

    by Birdie5673 on 2009-08-04McMahon Stadium - Calgary

I bought a ticket to Saturday's game - my sons have seasons tickets and I have friends with seats but no one had an extra ticket so I bought one for myself. Seat was amazing. Game was excellent. Weather mostly cooperated. (And of course the right team won!)

    Riders Won

by WRAP on 2009-08-03McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The game was great - the seating was terrible. Went online at 10:00am (this is second year in a row) and both years we have had the nosebleed section, this year we were in Section C - Row 58, and even though this was opening day and time that the seats were on sale, this is the best we could get - WHY.??? Is there a way to get better seats next year - ones with backs. Thanks - hopefully you can let us know how to get better seats.

    Riders win

by rucrazy on 2009-08-02McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Would have been nice to know that the seats we had in our section had no back rest, I mean I think even Taylor field made that a standard feature on their wooden and metal benches 10+ years ago. Concourse and washrooms can't handle large volumes of people during the half time as trying to get to the washrooms and go in the time span of halftime is impossible! So you better decide to miss the last 5 minutes of the 2nd quarter or hold it until 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter. On the plus side all seats do have a good view of the game

    Roughrider/Stampeder football game

by Hotdoghead on 2009-08-02McMahon Stadium - Calgary

This wasour first time visit to McMahon Stadium. We are newcomers to Calgary and avid Rider fans who have kept our seasons tickets to the Saskatchewan Roughriders for 2009 and return home when we can. We left early (4:30 pm)to find parking a few blocks away from the stadium and were surprized at all the individual "Tailgate" parties happening around the grounds of the stadium. This is not done in Regina - they have one big party prior to the game on the practice field where everyone gathers for a beer and food. We were treated with courtesy and the people working the entrance were friendly and helpful. Our seats were not what we were used to in Mosaic Stadium but we had a good view of the game and everyone around us had fun. We did not stand out in our Rider Green and the victory was the icing on the cake. It was a great game and lots of fun!

    Saskatchewan RoughRiders Vs Calgary Stampeders

by ShellKro on 2009-08-02McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Best Football Game I've watched in a long time. Very exciting. High Drama and excellent skill level. I think the rivalry between the Riders and the Stampeders exceeds all other rivalries in the Canadian Football League and maybe all of Football.

That was the first time I attend a football game on the spot. It was really impressive, amazing and fun. Since I live in Québec city, I was encourageing the Montreal alouettes and they won that night so, they made my day. I would certainly go again and I would recommed this stadium to everybody, great atmosphere!!

Grey Cup revenge tastes so sweet!

by iambinners on 2009-07-24McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Although it was a long, cold and rainy night, I could think of nothing better to do on Canada Day than to watch the Calgary Stampeders get their butts kicked by the Montreal Alouettes on their own turf! Being originally from Montreal, I will always support my hometown boys and felt proud sitting in the stands for this game.

    Stamps vs. Alouettes

by harleylil on 2009-07-24McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The game it's self was pretty good. The bad part of the evening was all the rain! Being a born and raised Calgarian I thought to wait 5 minutes and the weather would change. No such luck.. :(

    stampeders vs argonauts

by lakelife on 2009-07-23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

first two quaters of the game was full of time outs. Was really quite boring sitting there doing nothing. The seats we got were hard and very uncomfortable, priced higher than comfort warrents. The last half of the game was exciting and fun to watch. Everyone including the players were into the game finally. If you are going to the game to see the cheer leaders DON'T, I've seen better high school cheerleaders. The girls just strutted around but really didn't do any proforming worth watching.

    Stampeders running wild!

by MasterC on 2009-07-19McMahon Stadium - Calgary

It was an amazing game. The team looked like the one that won last year's championship. It was exciting both on offense and defense.
