Calgary Stampeders History

The Calgary Stampeders are the fifth oldest active franchise in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Founded in 1945, success came early for the Stampeders, who completed the CFL’s only perfect 12-0 regular season and secured their first Grey Cup in 1948. Overall, the Calgary Stampeders have appeared in 17 Grey Cup finals and won eight, in 1948, 1971, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018. Notably, the Stamps’ championship victories in 2001 and 2008 also stand as the two highest-attended CFL championship games of the 21st century. Throughout the team’s history, Calgary Stampeders players have claimed 11 Most Outstanding Player Awards, nine Most Outstanding Canadian Awards, six Most Outstanding Rookie Awards, four Most Outstanding Defensive Player Awards and eight Annis Stukus Trophies for the CFL’s top head coach. The Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton Elks are included in the multi-league sports rivalry between the two cities, dubbed the Battle of Alberta.

Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium

McMahon Stadium has been the home of the Stampeders since it opened in 1960. The stadium is owned by the University of Calgary and named after two Calgary residents and brothers, Frank McMahon and George McMahon, who helped fund the facility’s construction. McMahon Stadium was the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics' opening and closing ceremonies and has hosted five Grey Cup finals between 1975, 1993, 2000, 2009 and 2019. The 35,400-seat venue has undergone several expansions and renovations, most notably in 1988, 2001 and 2005. During home games, fans can catch sight of Ralph the Dog, the first mascot of any CFL team, or celebrate a touchdown with the release of a white gelding known as the "Quick Six" horse, who charges along the east sideline.

    Fantastic game

by When on 2017-08-01McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The Stamps put on an amazing show against Hamilton but also before the game for the celebration of the 1992 Greycup victory. It was awesome seeing so many of the past players.

Great View to a Calgary Victory

by Eskiebear on 2016-11-23McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Although my seats were high up, the view of the field and the big screen were great. My party enjoyed the game thoroughly.

    Great game by Stamps

    by CJS23 on 2016-09-26McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Stamps played very well. Great guns in the first half, then the usual let down in the 3rd quarter letting Ottawa back in it, before waking up in the fourth quarter to close the deal with 2 more touchdowns. 48 points scored is always great for the home team crowd!

    Labour Day Classic!

    by Nav1313 on 2016-09-08McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Seats were awesome with a good view of the field. Bad was the drunk season tickets holders behind us but that can happen anywhere. Seats not as wider as other stadiums and no cup holders. Tailgating before the game was incredible.

    Calgary fans are idiots

by riderrob on 2016-08-07McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The game itself was fantastic. As for the people attending the game, they need a lesson on how to behave in public. If you buy a beer, drink the beer not lets share with the people in front of us by dumping it on them. Also I do not want to wear your food. When you report to security these indescretions, the reply should not be "well he's drunk, there is nothing we can do'.

    Game was Great

by JudeandJohn on 2016-08-01McMahon Stadium - Calgary

There was a huge loudmouth lummox two rows back who brought along one of those toy horns, and spent the entire time blasting this horn so loud it burned our eardrums. We don't mind excitement and enthusiasm and fans yelling their support. That's the fun of attending the game, but this huge human boar with the horn wasn't there to attend the game, he was there to consume more beer and blow out the sound of every voices within 100 yards of him. I saw guards checking him out several times but they allowed him to continue his horn blowing. We left at half-time, came home and enjoyed the rest of the game at home.

Great game with a great seat - row 1 on the goal line. Was in the drum, horn and whistle row with season ticket holders that made the experience even more fun!

    Where's the wine?

by LVLV on 2016-06-14McMahon Stadium - Calgary

This is from the season ticket holder who used the 'Bring a Friend' tickets. Everything was perfect at tailgating, we invited two people visiting from Cannes, France . . . then we got into the stadium and THERE WAS NO WINE AT THE KIOSK at section W!!!!!!! How embarrassing that we had to tell French guests that wine was not readily available!! So much for encouraging Europeans to enjoy our sport!! We have been served there for three years and now they move it to section O!!? Why do we have to walk way around to the far side of the north end to get wine now!!??? BRING THE WINE BACK TO THE KIOSKS IT USED TO BE AT!! Lack of easy access only encourages people to sneak in their own booze!! Give your collective heads a shake McMahon management!! Hope this is just a pre-season oversight! Could you also put the birthday greetings at another time than at end of halftime. Many of our group (over 20 of us) are still waiting in line for the bathroom, hamburgers or drinks at that time! Besides, then the entire crowd will be able to enjoy the sentiment instead of whomever did not leave their seats! I bring this up because the person we asked to have their birthday announced did not see it and only knew about it when someone luckily took a picture of the Jumbotron and showed it to him after we returned to our seats.

Spooky Halloween Football Game - Stamps vs Riders

by BabyBauer on 2015-11-06McMahon Stadium - Calgary

What a wonderful Halloween Day CFL Football game! The weather was amazing, the game was amazing, all of the fans dressed up in costume were amazing, it truly was amazing! This was my first Roughriders game, and while it wasn't what I had thought it was going to be (not as roudy, not as many melon-heads), however it was still a lot of fun!

Excellent, weather, excellent game, brought our own fold up seats so the bench seats were good with location & getting in & out of stadium quickly & close to concessions etc.

    Defensive battle of Alberta

by Shearzone on 2015-09-14McMahon Stadium - Calgary

This is usually my favourite game of the year, but this year's edition was a low scoring affair since both team's defences are so strong. As a result, there weren't very many touchdowns to get excited about.

    Football game had everything

by Prognost on 2015-06-30McMahon Stadium - Calgary

Game was a little sluggish and error prone at times......every method of scoring happened from single, field goal, convert, safety and touchdown including new converts from 32 yes out. Scores from interceptions and punt returns. And the climatic ending on a beautiful night.......a special evening indeed!

    Patio at the Stamps Game!

by Twiggirl on 2015-06-29McMahon Stadium - Calgary

The service and the food was very good. As far as watching the game, it was not a vantage point for seeing the plays. I found that I could follow the game much easier from my regular seats. But if you just want a place to hang out amidst the action, it's a fun venue!
