About
Caloncho on Tour
Born Óscar Alfonso Castro, Mexican singer/songwriter Caloncho is known for his positive outlook and infectious optimism, which he shares in his lyrics and in his buoyant melodies. Since receiving two Latin Grammy nominations in 2014 for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album, Caloncho has gone on to amass a massive fanbase. The video for his hit single, "Optimista," which is about living in the moment and being grateful for what you have, has received 47 million streams and counting.
Caloncho's acclaimed 2022 album, Buen Pez, takes listeners on a journey with sounds of cumbia, rap and mariachi baked into his infectious melodies. It builds on themes he explores in his previous albums about not taking life or the freedoms we enjoy for granted, especially in light of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
Caloncho returns to the road, hitting cities in Mexico and across the U.S., creating a joyful live music experience for his fans. Don't miss your chance to join in on the fun.
Caloncho Live in Concert
Born in Ciudad Obregon in Sonora, Mexico, Caloncho grew up further south in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. As a kid he loved playing the drums, but later turned his attention to playing the guitar that his grandfather left for him years earlier. Caloncho began experimenting with melodies and learned to play covers of artists he admired, including Sublime and Bob Marley. He then adopted the stage name Caloncho, based on a nickname he was called by his grandfather and stepsister.
Caloncho released his debut EP, Homeotermo, in 2011 and his second EP, Fruta, in 2013. On his sophomore EP, he told Mexican folks stories and incorporated organic sounds such as water, fruit, lighters, and city sounds, as well as traditional instruments.
Caloncho's 2017 album, Bálsamo, spawned the hit song "Optimista," and his 2022 album, Buen Pez, sees him continuing to experiment with multiple genres to great effect. Caloncho says that his musical experimentation "has to do with a curiosity that I fortunately still have. I like music. I like to experiment with new or foreign genres. Mostly because I love that they take you to new places." He also collaborated with Tejano star Bobby Pulido on the upbeat single "Separarnos."
