Chicago Blackhawks History

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the Original Six group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013—beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games—and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center(Opens in new tab)—which opened in 1994—is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game—the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

  • $ 100 to watch the game on the score clock?

by HABNOTS on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 1 out of 5

Section D Row 3 Seat 14 There was very little of the game which could be seen. There were 2 -3 photographers in the box between the players bench for the entire game which blocked the view as well as trainers in each of the players boxes and G2 containers with towels and tape piled on them. Basically the only part of the ice which could be seen was between the blue line and the center ice line in the end which the Oilers occupied in the first and third periods. I am not certain if Chicago had a goalie in net or not for the 1st & 3 rd periods of the game? Prior to going I knew it would like watching paint dry and it was, as it is only pre season.

  • Nice to have NHL in Saskatoon

by deekes on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

I enjoyed the game and was glad that the teams brought some of their top players because I know that Edmonton played Minnesota the same night so we must have gotten most of the good players in Saskatoon. The one thing that bothered me during the game was that the fans were getting in and out of their seats while the play was on and we had to constantly tell people to get out of the way. We were located above a stairway and people were constantly standing/moving at the entrance and blocking our view.

Not having an NHL team in our city, these games are great to attend! We were impressed with the number of players we knew (were not all the ones simply 'trying out' for the team). Really hoping that other Canadian teams make a visit to our city in the upcoming years. Will definitley be going again next year if the games continue.

A great event for the Province of Saskatchewan. The opportunity to see the calibre of players such as Toews and Smyth along with up-and-comers like Nugent-Hopkins and Eberle were definitely worth the price of admission.

  • Blackhawks game was awesome!

by Cavey on 2011-04-20United Center - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Even though the Hawks lost, the event was amazing. Extreme energy in the United Center from the National Anthem right through to the end of the game.

  • Be careful what you're buying

I'm a big Hawks fan but live in Alberta and obviously don't get to go to any games normally so this was a big deal for the family ... got tickets on the first day individual tickets went on sale but was still only able to get standing room. Could have been worse I thought b/c I will still be able to watch my team. Not the case ... got there well before game time only to discover that they sell so many standing room tickets that people are lined up 2-3 deep. That's a problem for my 12 and 14 year old who can't see a dang thing. The result - for 2/3 of the game, my wife and son sat against the wall occasionally watching the game on the scoreboard. For the other two of us, we leaned and craned and managed to see a little bit of hockey but it was very disappointing. If you're gonna do it this way, then label it an "experience" and sell tickets for $5 a pop ... don't fool people into thinking that they are actually going to get to watch a full game. Otherwise. limit the tickets, set out a little area for each individual to stand in and make it worthwhile going there.

  • Amazing!

Watch a hockey game at the United Center is an unforgettable experience. The team, the fans, the atmosphere... Everything was amazing. I'd go there for every game if I could!

  • Black Hawks vs Tampa Bay - stars played!

by GKLCD on 2010-10-01MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Game was very good - competitive and most of top lines were there. Unfortunately, venue caused a few anxious moments bey advertising wrong start time.

The event was well run and well attended. Again, showing that Winnipeg could probably support NHL hockey

What an awesome game - reffing sucked, but the game was great.

  • NHL game in Winnipeg?!!!

    by Carolcool28 on 2010-09-27MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

The game was good. It's too bad that Chicago lost. Toews was the one everyone was there to watch. The crowd just didn't get to excited at all! Which is surprising since we don't have an NHL team in Winnipeg. My son enjoyed it!

  • Toews was great

by Muffette on 2010-09-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

Great to see the NHL in the Peg. The sold out crowd gives the impression that we might be able to have a team of our own.

  • by Kellye32 on 2010-09-26MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

I always enjoy intermission entertainment such as a few fans have a silly race on the ice or that kind of thing. This game didn't have that. The last minute time change was a little annoying. If my sister hadn't called me to tell me about it a couple hours in advance I wouldn't have known and would have showed up late. I still wasn't able to make it in time for warm up due to the time change. I really enjoy watching the warm up. On the other hand, it was a good game, I had good seats, and I always enjoy a hockey game. I love that Wpg gets to be host to at least one NHL game a year.

I took my 7 year old son to the game. It was the first NHL game he has been to and e absolutely loved it. He got to see Jonathon Toews play which was a huge deal to him.

  • Good Game!

by gjto on 2010-09-25MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Game was good - first time to MTS Center. Almost late, however, since gametime on our tickets was 7:30 and the game was at 7:00!

  • NHL Fast paced fun!!

by Kabob on 2010-09-25MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Blackhawks and Bolts was a very good game for pre-season. All the stars played and there was intensity. Some questionable one-sided refereeing but still an awesome game.

  • Awesome game

by Kork on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

We drove 8 hours to see a game that was supposed to start at 7:30 and it started earlier. Also the line ups for souveniers were way too long. Have to find a better way to look after that many people. Would have loved a t-shirt.

  • start time change

    by hockeymom3 on 2010-09-24MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

Although we enjoyed what we saw, we missed a lot. We live 3 hours out of town so getting an email 3 hours and 35 minutes before the game started was unacceptable. We were already on our way and thought we would be there in time to see the warm-up etc. Due to the crowds and traffic closer to game time, we didn't even see O Canada. The hockey was great but it was a lot of money and a long drive to not experience the whole game.
