First and foremost, I did not stay for Children of Bodom. Not only have their recent releases been abysmal compared to their earlier records, they wanted 40 bucks for a T-shirt. No thanks.
To my surprise, Obscura opened the show and played a great set as usual. This was my third time seeing them and the one thing I love about Obscura is their consistency. Each album is as good as the last and their shows NEVER disappoint.
Like Obscura, it was also my third time seeing Septic Flesh. Unlike Obscura, it was the worst of their three performances I've witnessed. It could be because most attendees were Bodom fans that Septic Flesh did not experience a lot of crowd energy. As well, I found the four tracks they played from their new album are hard to listen to live. Lots of starting and stopping, and an orchestral metal band such as them, they should really have a live symphonic band along with them.
When Devin Townsend came on stage, the place exploded. He opened the show with 'Supercrush!', from Addicted!, and I could tell he hooked everyone in, even as far as the back balconies. Although only tracks from the newest of the four album DTP quadrilogy were played, the musicianship and especially Devin's vocals were mesmerizing.
