About

Ten years ago, Greg Gonzalez was having a really rough Valentine's Day. Freshly heartbroken with no hope of reconciliation, he spent two hours driving from his hometown El Paso to play a show, and he listened to Sade's "By Your Side" on repeat both ways. "The experience that day stuck in my bones--it was an idea that I couldn't forget," says Gonzalez, the frontman of Cigarettes After Sex. "I thought, how do I make a record that feels like that?"

Filled with raw, imagistic, sometimes smutty vignettes set to entrancing, slowburn pop songs, Gonzalez knows how to capture every emotion a romantic arc inspires. But where previous albums have drawn from an amalgam of relationships, for the most part, his anticipated third album 'X's' centralizes on just one relationship that spanned four years. "The record feels brutal," admits Gonzalez. "I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn't scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it--in a good way. I don't have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget."

This period was one of immense personal growth for Gonzalez, but it was also during these years that Cigarettes After Sex--completed by drummer Jacob Tomsky and bassist Randall Miller--hit staggering new levels in their career, transitioning from a preeminent indie act to one of the most globally accomplished acts across any genre.

And still, Cigarettes After Sex maintain their mystique, fans sharing their music like an illicit secret and this poignant ten song collection will certainly stoke the flames. While continuing to observe classic pop song structures, Gonzalez has moved away from the prior sonic touchstones of the '50s and '60s, finding himself now drawn to a '70s/'80s slow dance. While (in typical Cigarettes style) these changes may be subtle, the overall resulting energy is akin to disco ball-refracted tears on the dance floor.

    Amazing but long wait

    by fay on 2022-10-07

We waited for about an hour before they came on stage, there was someone else from like 8-9 which made some people confused, myself included. Though it’s worth the wait because greg’s voice is amazing and the crowd was fun :) I really appreciated the concert after waiting for years to see them

CAS was awesome . The venue was confusing

    by C. P. on 2022-10-07MTELUS - Montreal

THe show was AMAZING. The opening act was nice , tho I didn’t know them . But when CAS came on stage it was wild . The songs were hits and well planned out . Unfortunately the last song wasn’t one i really knew so it was kinda bleh to me . I would’ve preferred if they had ended it with another one . Concerning the venue , there wasn’t much directions or guidance unfortunately so I couldn’t find my ‘loge’

show was awesome but wayy too crowded

    by :) on 2022-10-07MTELUS - Montreal

the show itself was one of the best shoes ive ever attended, but i could barely stand because there was way too many people. it was so crowded that my friend and i got separated à some point so we thought we'd move to the back, but we couldn't even reach the back because it was too full. overall great experience artist wise but hated this venue.

    Greg's voice is like butter

by Laurs on 2019-10-25The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Loved the Cigarettes After Sex show. The sound was amazing at the Danforth, and Greg's voice is mesmerizing. I just wish the show had been longer. Cool that the band stuck around to sign our merch - they were really nice.

    Boring

by The Fifth on 2019-10-24The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Not sure if this type of music meant to be played live at concert venues. The band performs their music exactly like listening to their recordings but every song sounds the same and it’s not music that you can get stoked on. Their live show is pretty robotic and doesn’t provide much energy. Might as well have had couches set up in the general admission area so you could lounge and fall asleep.

    Cleanest as it can be

    by D. k. on 2019-10-23

No opener, nothing extra. Did what they do best and walked off stage. They do come out 1.5~2h late so I suggest getting there at least an hour late and grab yourself a drink when you get to the venue, by the time you are settled, they will slowly come out.

Great show but long wait and kinda short show

by Cryb4by on 2018-04-12The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

The show was great but the wait was too long. They only started playing 2 hours after doors opening so many people including me stood for a very long time. Same thing happened last time I saw them live. Feel like they should get an opening band or reduce the waiting time to an hour max. The show was only a bit over an hour too so we stood longer than we actually watched/listened to the performance. Again the songs were great and they bring with them a feeling of nostalgia that is distinct to Cigarettes After Sex. The band did a fantastic job. No complains about the performance, just the wait time.

We waited for 2 hours with no music

by KTdotGirl on 2018-04-12The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Doors opened at 7pm, the band went on at 9pm. We had no opening band to watch, and just stood around in our heels on slanted concrete for two hours. It was such a buzz kill.

Wasted of 2 hours of my life

by Sim416 on 2018-04-12The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

The band took 2 hours to come out. I was just standing there staring at drums. Nothing was done to keep the crowd moving. My feet were sore. No apology was given as well.
