About

Ten years ago, Greg Gonzalez was having a really rough Valentine's Day. Freshly heartbroken with no hope of reconciliation, he spent two hours driving from his hometown El Paso to play a show, and he listened to Sade's "By Your Side" on repeat both ways. "The experience that day stuck in my bones--it was an idea that I couldn't forget," says Gonzalez, the frontman of Cigarettes After Sex. "I thought, how do I make a record that feels like that?"

Filled with raw, imagistic, sometimes smutty vignettes set to entrancing, slowburn pop songs, Gonzalez knows how to capture every emotion a romantic arc inspires. But where previous albums have drawn from an amalgam of relationships, for the most part, his anticipated third album 'X's' centralizes on just one relationship that spanned four years. "The record feels brutal," admits Gonzalez. "I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn't scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it--in a good way. I don't have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget."

This period was one of immense personal growth for Gonzalez, but it was also during these years that Cigarettes After Sex--completed by drummer Jacob Tomsky and bassist Randall Miller--hit staggering new levels in their career, transitioning from a preeminent indie act to one of the most globally accomplished acts across any genre.

And still, Cigarettes After Sex maintain their mystique, fans sharing their music like an illicit secret and this poignant ten song collection will certainly stoke the flames. While continuing to observe classic pop song structures, Gonzalez has moved away from the prior sonic touchstones of the '50s and '60s, finding himself now drawn to a '70s/'80s slow dance. While (in typical Cigarettes style) these changes may be subtle, the overall resulting energy is akin to disco ball-refracted tears on the dance floor.

Girlfriends Fav Artist/Band & First concert Ever

    by LucasSleeper on 2024-03-04

My girlfriend’s first ever concert in her life! Took her to see Cigarettes After Sex at RBC echo beach in Toronto!! Best time of our lives!! She had never been to a concert before and was so nervous about going and didn’t know what to expect. I had been too many concerts. before, so we got VIP tickets and had so much space and room around us to enjoy the concert! I loved every single moment and I could tell she loved it as well!! We waited first in line at the gates before they opened! Then got let in, and there was no crowd, rush, or people running to get to the front of the stage! The merch was so easy to buy, and very quick and convenient that we didn’t have to wait at all!! One of the best concerts I have ever been to!!!

    Mid af

    by R. A. on 2023-10-08

The concert was at echo beach. But it was actually just a giant parking lot. Not a beach. People paid more to he closest to the stage but there are no designated seats. It was a mess. He stopped the concert in the middle of a song to say random words. All the songs sound the same.

    My Favorite Concert to Date

    by A.F. on 2023-09-28

I saw them at the Salt Shed in Chicago. The venue was perfect, the visuals and the music were completely mesmerizing. Crowd was entranced. I wish the show had been longer. A lot of reviews complained that the singer didn’t speak enough or have enough presence but I feel like that’s missing the point of the performance entirely: the vocals and instrumentals speak for themselves. Overall 100% would recommend, was worth every cent.

    great experience for real!

    by m. l. on 2023-09-13

i went with my cousin on 09/04 and it was our first concert ever! so our honest review was how long we had to wait to get in ( about 1-2 hours and 30 minutes around that i believe, and people fainted about 2-3 times - again not their fault because of how hot it was ) and once we got in we had to wait again till it was quarter to 9 for them to come out. furthermore, during the performance was just beautiful and a wonderful experience for a first time concert, we enjoyed every bit of their performance and singing! not the standing part though, that’s something we would want next time if anything ( at least seats around or a venue with seats if anything ) other than that, we had so much fun !!

i had an overall great time, i’ve always loved cigarettes after sex. the music live was amazing to experience and it was definitely a concert i’m going to remember forever. i do have to say, the only complaint i have: they could have played more songs. an hour and a half was not long enough.

    It was a good experience

I love CAS!! They're music calms me down. I loved the energy there. Even if it’s the first time I came to went to a concert. There were just a few things that I didn’t like security , they had an attitude. Security told us to dump out our water when they were searching our bags! We needed the water! It was hot, yet we had to stop the concert 2 times because 2 people fainted. But overall, a good experience and worth the money!
