Colin performed for 2 hours, and he had great interaction with the audience, even coming into the front row while playing a solo.

Colin James is truly one of our under-appreciated artists in Canada. He is a consummate showman, with a terrific blues voice and an amazing guitar player. And the band he has put together is first class all the way. He never fails to give his all in his shows, and he has a warm and engaging personality on stage. Just a great time every time with Colin.

  • He still got it!

This is my 7th time seeing him in concert and I'm never disappointed. Great mix of rock and blues.

  • not bad; Colin James is quite predictable

Played lots of the same songs as last time. His new album Blue Highways is not that remarkable IMO. Just blues covers that have been done the same way by dozens of other blues artists. Would have liked to have heard new material.

  • Best in Canadian blues

by LauraLipson on 2017-02-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

For more than 30 years, Colin James has been Canada's best blues musician. I saw Colin in his early years in a Toronto cafe, spoke with him backstage at the I am a Wild Party Canada Day in Ottawa and most recently attended his show in my front row seat at our National Arts Center. I remain in awe of his talent as an artist and his ability to rock me. Thank you very much for your poetry Colin.

The music, sound systems and the performances of Monkey Junk and Colin James and all the musicians were excellent. What was annoying and frustrating was the number of people who were late getting to their seats at the start and after the intermission, taking pictures including using flashes, people recording entire songs, at least wo people who recorded the whole concert and other people playing with their phones while the performance was taking place. The lack of class and respect for the artists and the rest of the audience took away considerably from what should have been a great evening. I was a litlle disappointed when Colin James walked across the front of the stage, a usual part of his performances, but there was no spotlight to follow him. He was playing in darkness.

  • Still has the talent, needs better band maybe.

I hadn't seen Colin James perform before and he still has the guitar and vocal skills he had in the 90s, happily. There were a few moments when I felt like he and the band were not quite in sync. Like "Just Came Back". Pretty much my favourite song of his, but I was disappointed by the beginning and the music was always just a bit off His interaction with the crowd was rather flat, except for a couple of brief moments when he talked about performing at the Rainbow and some people from the crowd perked up. They performed a good number of songs over about 90 minutes. It was a good show, but could have been great with a little tweaking. If you're a fan, I recommend seeing it. If you only casually know his music, I would not recommend it. The lighting at the NAC was poor. Colin often went to the edge of the stage but pretty much disappeared because there was no light on him. Not his fault, but the NAC, or whoever controlled the lighting, should know better. The instruments could also have been mixed better: too much midrange/keyboard noise drowned out the drums and vocals at times.

  • Fantastic!

What an evening! Enjoyed every minute! Monkey hunk was a great addition! Wonderful seeing a Canadian Band open at the NAC !

  • Monkey Junk and Colin James - great performances!

by BigJoeMufferaw on 2017-02-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Both bands complimented each other incredibly. Great opening act pick for Ottawa in Monkey Junk - what a sound from the trio. Colin James did not disappoint and the adding of horns and harp was a bonus. James, a big smile on face throughout, was bang-on, all night.

  • Great show

by Jamminpete19 on 2017-02-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

We've seen Colin James many times, never disappointed-the band was tight, sound was great and the opening act(Monkey Junk)was very good.Colin had a horn section with him and Steve Marriner on harmonica which added a lot to the blues songs they played. The show was heavy on blues, and they mixed in a few solid hits from the past as well. Overall a very entertaining evening, hope to see them again soon..

My 6th Colin James event and I keep on returning. When he is on stage you can see, hear, and feel how much he loves making music.

we have seen him about 6 times and we still want to go see his concerts. Wish they would add a bit of light effects and have him moving around the stage a bit instead of always sitting down

  • Great acoustic and electric blues

  • Colin James rocked Rama!!

    by Munnman23 on 2016-04-05Casino Rama - RamaRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen Colin James since way back in the early 80's when he started out with Stevie Ray Vaughn. I have been to see him every year since then and he just gets better and better with age! I expecially love Rama. It is a really great venue and the acoustics are amazing. He is definately a must see if you have the chance and he is Canadian to boot! You will not be disappointed.

  • Amazing guitarist!

by MizBoo on 2016-04-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Colin James is an amazing guitarist and singer. I have seen Colin James once before at the NAC in a not so intimate setting. This show, he was sitting along side the other guitarist. Sat down for the whole performance. The lighting was mellow. Much preferred the other show when they were standing at the microphone singing and moving with the music. I found this type of performance a bit boring.
