Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets—whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War—joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

Nationwide arena is beautiful. The arena district has many places to eat or grab a drink, which I would recommend as the food in the arena is absolute garbage. i have been to several NHL arenas and the food at Nationwide is at the bottom of the list.

  • LET'S GO JACKETS!

by kmanjetsfan on 2014-05-05Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Drove all the way from Toronto to see my beloved Blue Jackets play in the playoffs. Great atmosphere & venue at fair price much lower than in Toronto. Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that they lost in a close one 4-3.

  • game was awesome

    by avsfan1937 on 2014-04-07Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The game was awesome, made better by the fact that my team won. The atmosphere at nationwide is amazing and the people working are super nice, even the bluejacket fans are nice and polite coming from a fan of the opposing team. We go every year so I can't wait till next season. :)

There were a surprising number of leaf fans there to watch the Leafs take on the Blue Jackets, great atmosphere, Nationwide arena is a modern arena putting on a great show, a cannon went off every time the Blue Jackets scored, good fun!!

Came from Toronto to watch this game, and couldn't have asked for anything better. Fantastic end to a season for a great team. I hope the Blue Jackets can keep their performance up next season; sad to see this one end as it did.

  • Nationwide is a great place to watch hockey

    by Lakeguy5206 on 2013-03-19Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

The location of the arena makes it a great place to watch NHL hockey. It is the best value for money location in the league. The arena district is clean and safe and never seems too busy. Parking is close, easy and inexpensive. The site lines in the arena are excellent and replays on the new scoreboard are amazing.

  • Bluejackets game

by Networthy on 2013-03-09Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

We bought the Tim Horton package with food voucher, hat and mug with the ticket. It was a great deal. The view was good we could see all of the game with no blind spots. My son had a great time and made some friends.

It was a good game because my team won :) Seats were pretty good. I got family pack tickets but not sure they're really worth it.

It was such a great experience, being a Hawks fan, I don't regret having made the 3 hours drive to Columbus to see the game. The ambiance was great and the game was awesome... would return again for sure....

  • The Team Deserves Better

by CanadianOranges on 2012-02-12Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

Aside from the skill on the ice, Columbus is doing everything right with this team. Nationwide Arena is a work of art. The spectacle and fanfare are top notch. The team on the ice makes some critical mistakes at times, but with another good player or two and better coaching, they could be competitive.

  • Great Hospitality in Columbus

    by Teeg19 on 2012-01-23Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 4 out of 5

The Blue Jackets inside sales rep contacted us, with a list of available places to stay, eat and drink, and we thought it was a wonderful extra step that they took. The arena district is outstanding, make sure to head down early 4:30 before a 7 game, as it fills up. We stayed at the lofts, the crown plaza and hyatt are both only a block away, but the lofts offered a different experience I would recommend to anyone.

  • Columbus Rocks

by MidnightRambler on 2011-11-07Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

They have a great venue in Columbus for watching hockey. It is a spacious, modern facility with lots of concessions, in-game attractions, restrooms, and a great team store. There are no shortage of great places to go before or after the game, all of which you can walk to. And getting a cab after the game is easy too. I wish this facility was in Toronto!

  • Blue Jackets vs Maple Leafs

    by KennyKD1 on 2011-11-05Nationwide Arena - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

My son and I travelled from Toronto the day of the event and we had an amazing time. What really blew me away was the friendly staff. From the initial call from the team's office the day before (Ellen K.) to see if I had any questions to the ticket scanners to the vendor (food and beer) providers, everyone seemed to be genuinely interested in making sure that we had a great time.

  • Sharks @ Blue Jackets

Great place to watch a hockey game. Good crowd, good atmosphere, great price on the seats for what you get compared to other cities.
