Columbus Blue Jackets History

The Columbus Blue Jackets — whose name pays tribute to Ohio's substantial contributions to the Union army during the Civil War — joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 2000.

The Blue Jackets played their first 12 seasons as a member of the Western Conference, making their first foray into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008-2009 led by All-Star winger Rick Nash and Rookie of the Year goaltender Steve Mason.

NHL realignment saw the team move to the Eastern Conference in 2013-2014, and the Blue Jackets have since collected six winning seasons and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs five times. Columbus was one of just three teams to earn playoff berths in four consecutive seasons from 2016-2020, joining the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals.

In 2018-2019, the eighth-seeded Blue Jackets faced off against the Presidents' Trophy-winning and top-seeded Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets shocked the heavily-favored Lightning as they became the first team in NHL history to earn a four-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs against a team with the league's best regular-season record.

Had a great time at the game. Very nice arena and surrounding area. Stayed at the Drury Inn only 2 blocks away. Perfect! Can't wait to come back for another game.

Weekend trip to see Columbus Bluejackets

by kbsb on 2017-10-24Nationwide Arena - Columbus

This is the third time down there, sat in different sections each time view is good, seats are a little tight and by no means are we huge people. Atmosphere is great if you have kids get there early a take a picture with the cannon they'll love it. Overall great place to see a Bluejackets game.

    Great experience.

    by jingles6 on 2016-03-20Nationwide Arena - Columbus

My first time here at Nationwide. Fans gather outside the rink before the game and chat it up. The people were easy to talk to. Lots of Red Wings fans. Inside the rink is very new and modern. Game programs are easy to obtain and they dont put a limit on how many you can have. The place is buzzing with excitement. The food is great and can be smelled all over. I found the cup holders would dig into my legs once I got myself seated, and the amount of room was limited. Great arena in a good location. Loved when the players came out. Warm ups are interesting. Great crowd. Wings won.

Hockey is my sport and montreal is my team. The only trouble was the atmosphere wasn't their because the arena was less than half full. I would return to see my team play.
