Corinne Bailey @ QET
by MyHonestReview on 2010-05-04Queen Elizabeth Theatre - TorontoTorontoExcellent show by Corinne. Her graceful performance was just as I imagined it. Smooth and lyrical - love the Spanish guitar on Like A Star. Opening pair of songs with Corinne on the electric guitar were wicked and got the whole show kicked off to a great start. She seemed a bit shy but enjoyed the extremely warm welcome from the Toronto crowd. Opening act Merriweather's personality was pleasant enough but he was trying far too hard to be soulful (especially a counterpoint to Corinne's effortlessness) and lacked the vocal ability to pull it off. Too much forced grimaced bluesy ooooing and ahhiing coupled with boyband gestures to lyrics: pointing up when "high", touching the chest when singing "heart", touching the temple when "thinking" , thumb and pinky to ear when calling on the phone, and my favourite, clenched palm extended outward, rolling left and right to signify "driving" . The same gestures were repeatedly mimed through almost every song. All this and the man actually tried to cover a Leadbelly song. Yikes. My comment to the staff at the QET is to watch the distortion and reverb. You have a beautiful venue with an amazing sound system (I heard the range during the opening act - the sound system was great even if the opener wasn't.). Please don't be ruin your shows by participating in the common practice of turning up the volume until notes and words bleed into one another. When you have a singer with such clear vocals it's especially annoying. Most venues think that jacking it up to eleven for the featured act will better whip the audience into a frenzy. What it actutally does is have audience members leaving with comments like "great show (said only because they are fans of the performer), it's a shame the sound system sucks." Please distinguish yourself from the other venues and show some restraint. (*Note: I am not saying the show was too loud per se as I attend rock and alt rock shows, rather the volume was turned up too loudly for the clarity of this particular singer coupled with this particular sound system. Sound systems shouldn't indiscriminately make every artist sound grungy and dirty).
